Coralville Super matches

2 were pretty clear cut. He’s very clearly off his knees as he gets pushed out for the 2nd and 3rd point.

He grounds himself on the first one but they don’t always honor that if it’s clear you’re only doing it to avoid the push out. He got run halfway across the mat there. Can’t really complain when they give the point just because your knees touched as you go out.

And Spencer couldn’t get anything going offensively. He got one point on a caution because Ono grabbed the head with 2 hands (weird freestyle quirk) and a charity caution with 3 seconds left that would never be given if it actually mattered.

He got outwrestled by one of the best P4P guys in the world, but nobody else has been nearly that competitive with Ono. Spencer is clearly one of the best in the world. No shame in losing to a guy like that.
Ono in on a single once but Spencer got out. Announcers said Ono has taken down everyone this year he got that deep on. He was too quick for Spencer, and too big to muscle around. Spencer lost a lot of his quickness after all the knee problems.

David Carr did a good job. Made it happen.

But if I were Takatani I would of been so annoyed by the constant hands to the head by David Carr. And what I call "athletic stalling" Now Carr made up for that with big moves.

I was standing next to carew and he said that ref is the best in the world.

Literally. Sammy Julian is the guy you want on the call, full stop. Most importantly - he's VERY consistent. And if you watch enough FS matches - he doesn't miss. The rationale all on all his calls are the exact same.

One thing to look for is the ref signaling "grounded" - both palms facing down. You pretty much have to have that if you want grounding as a call. It has to be obvious and it has to basically be a position where scoring is not imminent.

Watch Zahid's first go-behind takedown. Hidlay grounded himself - ref signals for it. and then Zahid jumps to finish the front head. Off his knees and he steps out of bounds. But because there was a "grounded" signal - he got the takedown.

It's a small nuance - but unlike folk - it's REALLY consistent.

That is exactly what it feels like. It’s stupid. It’s not even like a person is being passive. They can be fighting to stay in bounds and still suffer. It is the dumbest rule in freestyle wrestling and doesn’t ensure the best wrestler wins. It’s actually a strategy that allows for an inferior wrestler to win.

Then don't get pushed out. You're not the "better" wrestler if you lose under the ruleset.

And feel free to watch more FS - the "better" wrestler has never lost because they got pushed out more.

Aside from Carr I thought Austin Gomez had the best night. Andonian isn't a world medalist by any means but Gomez' versatile attacks, quickness and strength were really impressive. Not sure if his 65kg days are behind him but I could see him making some noise there.

Same approach as against Messenbrink a couple of years ago. Was unfairly targeted for stalling in that match because of it, in my opinion.

Yes, I'm a 'freestyle junkie" and I don't believe I've ever seen situations like this when it wasn't called grounded.
Terry clearly didn't like it either based on his reaction in between periods. I thought the only legit pushout was the second one. Did not think the first one was at all and the third one was iffy. That being said, I've never seen Spencer look so human. We're used to him going out and dismantling everyone, it's almost like this was make believe. Speaks to both guys and how great they are. I'm sure Lee will learn from it and what an awesome event.

Guys who pretty well teched their way to world championship gold 5 months ago (at a higher weight class) will have that effect ;). Ono has also competed at a high level at 65kg. I think the size and strength difference was just too much for Lee but it shows he's right there with the best in the world.

Exactly. Competing against guys like that is really the best way to improve, imo.

Sitting at home reflecting on the event last night.
1 it was a cool atmosphere staging and lighting were on point, mic not working was a really bummer though.
2 the lack of a good scoreboard that could be seen from everywhere was a real disappointment. I sat in the end zone and could kind of see the mat side board but not in any detail. They really could have used the wrap around board to great effect.
3 really good attendence for a Wednesday night. I have to imagine Bo Basset was a little bit surprised how big it was and how excited people were to see him.
4 while the matches didn't go the way I would have hoped there were plenty of exiting match ups. David Carr and Jake Knight both provided a lot of entertainment. Spencer and Ono are both absolute beasts and I'm sure this was great for Spencer's development.
5 security at the that arena continues to annoy me. I hate walking into that place. In a 5 thousand seat arena in iowa not an airport or the super bowl.

I'd love to see Spencer develop an attack from space. He's very dependent on wrestling in the ties, which is almost never a problem because he's so strong, but when he's run up against guys like Higuchi and Ono who he can't move, he hasn't been able to generate anything.

I think in the past he struggled with attacking from space because with blown out knees he couldn't sprawl and explode like he needed too. Now that his knees are both "good" he probably should try to add that to his arsenal. It probably creates scrambles at worst, which he is excellent in uncomfortable positions and could create some exposure opportunities for him as well.

I do think the size difference is a big difference. Losing by a point to the world champion a weight class up is a pretty elite result.

never so bored watching spencer lee wrestle.you freestyle freaks love your push out rule, a lot of you think it will save college wrestling.no thank you
I mean that 0-0 first period watching back Carter Young to the edge for 3 minutes with no stall calls was pretty awesome.🙄. Saving? I don’t think it needs saving but push outs and passivity with a shot clock are a better rule set that creates more action in my opinion and solves most of the stalling issue. I’m not a make folk free person just think this is a better option minus the grounding.

There was more going on than the common fan could see in that match. The defensive skill level of both were phenomenal. This principle is why the common fan doesn’t appreciate Greco.

Spencer was a clear underdog and proved he belonged with one of the most dominant wrestlers in the sport. This guy DESTROYED Vito and Uguev at worlds. Pretty impressive showing if we're going to take the hawkeye glasses off.

This. And with Higuchi announcing he’s not participating at worlds Ono Probly stays at 61 this year
