Cordell Pemsel

The cynic in me says that the Wahlert coaches are scrabbling to keep Iowa interested by exaggerating his measurables. I think the jury is still out on Cordell. Scholarship offers are retractable, after all.

Iowa just had Cordell on campus a week or two ago, I seriously doubt Iowa coaches would be influenced in the least bit by what a high school lists as a players height in their program. Iowa knows exactly how tall he is from face to face interactions this month. As others have mentioned, HS and even some college coaches are notorious for exaggerating players height and weight. Nothing to see here...whether this kid is 6'7 or 6'10 is the least of our concerns, what is most important is if he is able to fully recover from injuries.

Your cynic needs a vacation, that theory is just bat guano crazy. No place for that kind of speculation either it leads to nasty rumors.

I have always preferred players who can shoot well.

That seems to be important for winning.

This thread is coming to an end, I hope. Last time I saw and talked to Cordell was in August, and I was looking up at his armpits. I said to him, "You're still growing! He looked an inch or more taller than last season when he played at 6-8. "How tall are you?" I asked. "I'm 6-9 now," Cordell said. Since he is still growing, I think his coach (or whoever gave the heights) said he was 6-10 because if he keeps growing, that's what he could be by the end of this coming season. That same coach had Eric May at 6-4 and Eric played at Iowa at 6-5, so it goes both ways. Cordell is at least 4 inches taller than May. Cordell has been trying to keep his weight down so he can be more agile. I don't care how tall he is; I just hope he can stay healthy so he can play this season and help the Hawkeyes when he gets to Iowa. Like IC West's Connor McCaffrey, he's on such a strong and balanced team this year that he's not going to have sensational stats.

I do not believe we pull his scholarship whatever the outcome. I hope he becomes a stud that can play 4/5 to go with some of our new wing players..

Thank you. I was afraid I was going to have to pull up the photo of vintage "spring shoes". Cordell is a great addition to the Hawkeyes. A kid who grew up an Iowa fan, and I'm looking forward to his years in Iowa City. In the meantime, it sounds very likely he will be on the court this year. Good stuff.

The offer is not going to be retracted...the kid is too good to do that...assuming his issues with his knee are behind him.

Makes sense because they just had him in for his official visit and he spend the weekend with the coaches. Certainly trying to pull the old wool over their eyes with the listing because I'm sure that Fran and is staff couldn't tell how tall he is when he's standing next to them. o_O

It's one thing to be cynical and another to not be logical at any level. Cordell will be signing with Iowa next month. Sorry to disappoint.

Pemsel is now listed at 6'10 245 on the Wahlert site

I've gone to the Wahlert school site...I cant find a thing about Pemsl being 6'10"....in fact I cant find a roster relating to basketball..which doesn't surprise me considering its October...where specifically are you seeing Pemsl being listed at 6'10"?

I never said the cynic in me was smart. and it doesn't disappoint me one iota to have Cordell sign if the staff thinks he will contribute.

I'm not going to be greedy. 6'9 is fine with me. ;) But what if Pemsl is 6'10, and if Cook is 6'9 like he said when he committed, and if Kreiner is still growing like he tweeted? All of a sudden, this class has monster size. All are 240+

Trivia question: When was the last roster we had 3 guys at or above 240?

We probably had a roster with Cougill, Brommer and Cole at or above 240 at one point, didn't we?

Well Cougill probably hit about 295 at one point, so on average for those 3 it works out to 240.....................;)

I still don't see anywhere where he is listed at 6-10 on any official or school site, and I've been looking. The kid himself says he's about 6-9, so I believe he should know. Fran just saw him two weeks ago, so Fran knows exactly how tall he is. Fran's boys are pretty tall, so he can guess heights pretty accurately. Maybe he'll grow another inch and maybe he won't. I doubt he will, but you never know. As far as I'm concerned, the whole issue is that he can stay healthy and work on his game. He's lost almost a year hobbling around with a twice-torn meniscus and the surgeries, and is now starting to play again. He has a lot of ground to make up. His soph films and videos look good on the internet, but he definitely wasn't moving around all that great as a junior when I saw him in games. He hopes to be ready to play for the opener Dec.1 at 4A defending champ North Scott (which I think has a tall transfer from Moline) and then they play at WDM Dowling (if they beat Dav. Assumption in the Maroon Classic), which I believe has a 6-10 center. Everybody will be able to see how he stacks up height-wise. Pemsl's high school coach and asst. coach stand 6-6 and 6-7 respectively, so nobody looks all that tall on the Wahlert bench. Cordell has been steadily growing, no doubt about that. My dream is that he'll be another Kevin Kunnert, who played at 6-10 his senior year at Wahlert, then grew to 7-1 when he started at Iowa. Hate to say it, but my dreams don't come true all that often..

Thanks EastIowaHawk. I'm always a little surprised people don't remember Kevin Kunnert as well as other guys like Johnson, Brown and Lester. He played right between those guys in the early seventies and was a great Hawkeye. Maybe it's because there wasn't the team success? But Kevin was special.

I have a good feeling Pemsl will recover quite well and make his own mark on Hawkeye history.
