Coronavirus...In all Seriousness...

Use caution. I’m not gonna beat a dead horse, but it’s never been more important to synthesize information on your own than now.

1) it’s not the end of the world global World War Z pandemic.

2) it’s not SARS or Ebola. With those, you knew you were sick. As mentioned you can carry this, not get sick, and get people sick. While the mortality rate is low compared to those other diseases, COVID-19 is much easier to transmit. that makes it harder to contain.

3) it’s not the flu. It’s much worse. There is no vaccine. You know the flu shot you got this year? It was developed off the strain two years ago with expected mutations. It takes a long time to distribute these things and we’re not close to a pharmaceutical solution.

4) the idea when the weather turns this will be over ignores the fact that when half the world is warm, the other half is cold.

5) be responsible for others. If you came from BIgs or overseas or a concert, you owe it to everyone to wait before visiting a nursing home, or seeing your friends newborn, or or or. The immunocompromised need us to help them. If you’re at risk of being a carrier, I am not going to tell you to lock yourself in the bathroom, but be aware of it and avoid the places where the people who can be really harmed congregate.

The Doctors (disease specialists) with the World Health organization stated that there is no credible evidence that the virus will ease up in warm weather. This disease has only been around several months and has not gone thru a warm weathe cycle yet.

The 1918 Flu that killed so many people worldwide did go down in the summer and then came back with a vengenance in the fall. So warm weather could possibly DELAY, but NOT STOP this virus.....

OBTW....the 1918 Flu raged on for 3 years..........

Harvard, Princeton, and Stanford have all gone to online classes for the rest of the semester.

Guessing more schools will be doing this soon.
U of Washington was first. There are like 50 that have announced they will be online after spring break. Iowa says they are considering it.

warm weather is not what kills the virus, it is the humidity that kills the viruses. Everyone should keep indoor humidity between 30-40% this time of year, there would be much less spread of any virus

Agree that humidity is important in preventing infection from the virus..

Also some think that the extra Vitamin D produced by sunshine in summer months is what helps then, not warm weather. Vitamin D and Vitamin C are fairly cheap as precautionary steps one can take to boost your immune system.

How does this effect the wrestling teams? Are they allowed to still be on campus and practicing?

That is a very good question....... for all sports teams. Not sure. o_O

I would think right now they are still training, but who knows when that may change, I am sure we will see some info coming out soon.

You would think they would still try to get NCAA wrestling and basketball in if at all possible, but things can change quickly.

Baseball and Track may have more issues in the future.

This comment isn't directed at you and your wife personally, but rather society in general. In my opinion, this concern about coronavirus is the ultimate in paranoia and overreaction. As someone posted yesterday, you have a better chance of winning Megamillions than dying from the virus. It's simply a type of flu, and almost everyone who dies from it are elderly with pre-existing compromised health.

Do you think "I shouldn't drive because I might get in an accident and die?" Of course not! But driving is much more dangerous than going to the NCAAs! Go enjoy the greatest wrestling event in the world, and celebrate a Hawks win in person!!
Its that likely now, but a pandemic can occur at an exponential rate. 1-4% doesnt sound like a lot, but something so contagious could kill millions. Having said that, at this point proper precautions, washing hands, keeping hands to your self, etc. is the best we can do.

UV light also kills viruses

Vitamin C doesn't boost your immune system; studies are mixed as to whether vitamin D has any effect on colds. And there's no way you can boost your immune system without serious medical intervention (my immune system is already boosted since I have allergies...whereas a friend has little immune system so she gets regular infusions of immunoglobulins).

That being said, practice excellent hygiene, cough into your elbow, stay home if you are symptomatic, eat a lot of leafy green vegetables, and cheer for the Hawks. :D

It's summer in Australia and they have COVID-19 down there.
Australia’s seasons comprise of three full months per season. Each season begins on the first day of the calendar month, so summer is from December 1 to the end of February, autumn from March to May, winter from June to August, and spring from September to November.

Rewind to high school biology. Virus’s aren’t organisms because they don’t engage in self sustaining actions.

“Viruses are alive, if only because life is a widespread system of evolving chemistry. Not everyone agrees with this distinction, based on the fact that, like rocks, viruses do not have self-generated or self-sustaining actions.” (Source: sciencealert.com)

a virus is more an enzyme with nucleic acids. Vitamin D can help your body fight it off, but vitamin D doesn’t necessarily penetrate the nucleus of a virus. However, what stimulates vitamin d synthesis in your body is sunlight. (skin creates vitamin D with cholesterol when exposed to sunlight)

Sunlight/temp/UV exposure are just some of the factors known to denature enzymes.

Sunlight weakens the virus, however it can lay dormant, mutate, etc.

Shout out to Mr Flynn, my high school bio teacher and wrestling coach for ingraining this one in me.

What ever happens, happens. Will I be pissed off if the tournament is cancelled, yes? But you know what they say, "Better to be pissed off than pissed on". You have to look out for the safety of everyone and do what's right. Just going to have to wait and see but life goes on. Go Hawks.

Might be splitting hairs on word choice that Vitamin C boosts the immune system. But it is necessary to fight infections and viruses.

Currently there are 3 approved research studies going on for intravenous Vit. C administration in China.

They also produced and delivered 50 Tons.....yes Tons of Vit C to Wuhan for people to use.

Some interesting information about intravenous Vit C usage in treating viruses in some of the news release and information at

on the drop down menu "Library" and then under News Releases.

Shanghai Government offically recommends Vitamin C for COVID-19

I think the wise thing to do is for all countries in the world to shut down all air travel and bus travel, close all offices, restaurants and retail stores, cancel all sporting events at all levels, cancel church services, and delay elections until 2021. Even a vaccine won't help, since hundreds of thousands (millions?) die each year fron the flu, despite there being a flu vaccine. This is undoubtedly the end of human existence!

:rolleyes::rolleyes:o_Oo_O:eek::eek::p:p

It looks like the University of Iowa moving to all online classes is actually happening.

Hopefully this does not mean anything for NCAA’s. I’m assuming schools could still attend the event even if their in person classes are cancelled?

FWIW, the cancellation of classes won't happen until after spring break.

Not true. Vit D has little or nothing to do with viral outbreaks. Last August there was a flu outbreak in Florida. Can’t be any hotter, higher humidity, or more sun than Florida in August. Maybe a bit more sun in June July in Florida.
