Cost of living raise denied by Obama

Why am I not surprised? No social security raise for senior citizens for the upcoming year 2016. This is happening because Obama says the cost of living has not gone up at all this past year due to lower gas prices. He must be out of his mind, but then what's new? Has this guy been in a grocery store lately? You can spend over $100 in a grocery store and not even buy any meat. The cost of fruit and vegetables has skyrocked lately. For example, I bought fennel seed under an ounce for $3.38 for this tiny amount. Not even an ounce. One cup of honey is $3.15. If these are just essentials for Christmas cookies, which you normally don't buy everyday, but if you look at canned soup, canned beans, etc., you cannot even get a can of soup for less than a dollar anymore. All of the prices are ridiculously high, just take a look at the cost of yeast and bread on the shelves. You can't even buy hamburger anymore without getting into high prices. Not to mention stuff like beef and pork steaks. Now we cannot even afford to buy beef and pork steaks because of the high prices. This does not even include the high copay costs of the different Medicare D plans. I thought Obamacare was supposed to be the affordable care act. I paid more out of pocket this year than my insurance paid for my meds. My premiums are higher than my wonderful 1.7% cost of living raise this past year on my Social Security. We think this guy Obama, who probably hasn't even been into a grocery store in the past 30 years, needs to go into a grocery store and take a look at the high prices. Yet he gives billions of dollars to foreign countries who hate America's guts and wish "Death to America." But yet he cannot replace the SS money that the politicians have stolen from us over the past 40 years, which they promised to replace with interest. They have not done this, of course. No wonder Donald Trump and Ben Carson are so popular.

Are you really this dumb? Did Obama set up the rules for cost of living increases? Did he compute the consumer price index they're based upon?

Are you really this dumb?
I would hardly think that I am "this dumb" with a bachelors degree in psychology and a masters' degree in Counseling. You must be rich and can afford all of this food without a blink of the eye. but then, cigaretteman, you never cease to amaze me with your liberal "logic."

And to think that I used to think that Iowans were pretty smart people. And yes, I realize that Obama does not set the consumer price index. But he did promise us hope and seems able to wield his mighty pen to sign numerous executive orders. Just wondering why he couldn't use his mighty pen to start paying back the stolen Social Security money to senior citizens. And yes, i do realize these are as you say "First World Problems." It is just a frustrating experience to go to the grocery stores around the US and have to pay these ridiculous high prices. I'll be leaving now to go back to my own board where "off topic" board does not exist. Thanks for at least providing the off topic board, Hawkeyes. And apparently an occasional Tar Heel.

Well, ahhhhhhh, nevermind???

WWJD???

You rang?

As for the lack of COLA for SS recipients, I just got off the phone from paying my dental insurance. Up 5% from last year. My Medicare supplemental was up more than that last January. And my cable went up 16%. With recovering housing market, my real estate taxes are up, too. And then there's food....

Note that only one of those is really optional - the cable bill - unless you think seniors should do without medical insurance.

On the bright side, gasoline is down. But if you aren't one of those seniors traveling around in your RV during retirement, that hardly registers. Yet is it the main excuse for not raising the SS benefit. That's because we use an adjustment formula focused on workers, who do benefit a good bit from reduced transportation fuel costs.

You know those memes about seniors having to choose between food and medical care. I'm not there - yet - but it's not just a made up problem.

This is hilarious, must be performance art. The idea that of all the troubles in the world, you just had to get the price of fennel seed off your chest so posted here for the first time is too good to be true.

Why don't you tell us more about how this society steals money from old people. That sounds like some meat we could chew on.

Appears to be a choice between fennel seed and medical care.

I'm very disappointed that Obama isn't pushing for a CPI calculation that is more suitable for seniors. There is such a thing. I think it's the CPI-E (for experimental - which, despite the name, has been around for decades) instead of CPI-W (for workers or wage earners or something like that). For a while Obama even expressed a willingness to go for the Chained-CPI (as part of a compromise), which would have been even worse for seniors. That's a favorite with the GOP. No doubt we'll get it if a Republican takes the White House.

Just old Americans. They mostly vote R, so it may just be strategic not personal.
I hear that said a lot, but is it true? Maybe in the South. Then again, doesn't the retired community in Florida usually lean pretty heavily D? Not that Florida retirees are representative of the Southern demographic.

Exit polls say old people vote R. Is there a reason not to believe them?

A couple of interesting (and contradictory) graphs on that. Here's one, suggesting a recent shift to R (coinciding with the election of the black guy - and, yes, there's reason to think that's the main factor).

uq6mu71wdug3rrebhcn4za.png

Other graphs are here (I can't copy them)

http://www.people-press.org/2015/04/07/party-identification-trends-1992-2014/

They show that older retirees (the silent generation) split pretty evenly and currently favor Rs by a small margin - but newer retirees and those soon to retire (the boomers) lean D by a larger margin.

All of which suggests a steady swing to the left among the elderly as the older ones die off and the black guy leaves the White House.

Note this is affiliation, not voting. Another article from Pew said that elderly have voted R in every election since 2006 which seems to be a leading indicator that jives with your graph above.

It would make sense that the elderly would vote D. The elderly are dependent on Medicare and SS and one party looks out for those while the other ties to take them away. If everyone voted their self interests Rs would never win another election. It just shows how buffoonish Ds are that they can't even sell people on themselves. Rs are master marketers.

Let them eat cake, right Mr. Elitist?

Fittingly, this quote was actually a fabrication as it was a quote from an author, attributed to a royal from years before Marie Antoinette, that was used in a slanderous campaign against the French royal family and in particular Marie Antoinette (who ironically was quite charitable to the poor, though her families extravagant lifestyle doomed her.) Kind of fitting then, how you attribute this attitude to Obama.

While what you posted was interesting, it doesn't have anything to do with the intent of my post. Regardless of whether not the quote is true or not, it doesn't detract from the point of its usage here.

Basically this. You can't complain about the increase in price of some goods while ignoring the decrease in price of others.

That's why I love ya soup, never one to let facts slow you down. Extreme, unwavering, dogmatic, ideological drivel all the time, reality be damned.

How does what he posted have anything to do with my intent on using the phrase?

This is all you guys do. Bring up facts that don't have anything to do with the conversation in order to deflect or change the subject all together. I'm trying to hold this hypocrite, Slieb's feet to the fire in another thread where he's trying such tactics, I'm guessing because he knows I'm right.

We all know the intention in which I was using the phrase. You obviously got it because you responded in kind. So, how does the phrase possibly not being true change any of that?

Because it beautifully illustrates that your understanding is as wrong as your argument is as wrong as your supporting quote. It's a pretty epic fail. If you had any sense of humor you would see that Menace just destroyed you. Take it like a man, give him props and live to hurl insults another day. We all get bested from time to time.
