Davenport coach alleges racist comments by basketball refs

Does the IHSAA pay the officials? I coached softball for 29 years. The checks written to our officials were from the school. At tournament time, the girls union assigned our officials and paid them.
Usually the schools pay

I am saying that since the club circuit refs are paid better, more good officials are headed that direction.

Maybe, but in my nearly 30 years of coaching both (HS and AAU) I had the same good officials, and some not as good, for both groups.

You are making yourself look very dumb in this thread.
Ok racist. Urban is a term used exactly how you have done to describe black and brown culture without mentioning race. You specifically used it to describe Davenport North as diverse and poor. In other words you used the word urban as a racial trope and then ran to a the definition of city or town to cover your ass. Chances are it didn't occur to you that your language was racially charged. It was and you should stop. Referring to black and brown people as urban is racist. That school or urban as you are talking about it being poor and diverse is racist. By the way it also implies a population density that part of Davenport doesn't really have.

Oh and your buddy Tom Paris talking about educators calling it urban sort of underlines the point. It is code for talking about race without bring up race. Educators in Iowa interestingly enough suspend black kids at 3-5 times the rate of white kids. Change the way you speak and think educators

Moving from Bettendorf/PV district back to Davenport was the best decision I ever made. So many deplorables in Beigendorf.

torbee,

Two questions:

1. Did you move into Davenport while your kids were still in K-12 school, or after they graduated?

2. Do you believe the Davenport North coach's story?

No. No. What a ton of horsecrap. You’re reading FAR too much into that. Now, if I had said “inner city”…you might have a point. Davenport, like Cedar Rapids, is urban. North Scott is small town and rural. Nice reach.

So we had a dinner party last night. I polled 7 people who live in Davenport and Bettendorf. An attorney who specializes in defending local government agencies, the HR Director of the regional blood center, a business CEO, someone who is an executive in the UI College of Liberal Arts, an HR attorney, a small business owner and an accountant (quite the cross section of intelligent, educated professionals)

The poll question: Would you consider Davenport North to be an urban, suburban or rural high school.

100% unanimity that it is an urban school.

Like I said, @hawkedoff - you know not what you speak of.

You hearing anything about the OP situation? I just can’t fathom all 3 refs calling the coach an n-word.
Under investigation still. The crew that was supposed to ref their game Friday didn’t show up, sounds like in protest, so they had to scramble to find refs.

I see Torbee ignored this...
Happy to answer but I don’t see the relevance as I’ve not made a single comment regarding the veracity of the accusations.

1. We moved when my oldest was a senior at PV. I’d wanted them to go to Dav Central, but Mrs. Torbee is a PV grad and wanted her kids to go to the same school she did, so I lost that argument 🙂

2. I wasn’t there and the coach didn’t agree to give details to the local media, so I am withholding any judgment until more details emerge. In my years with kids playing sports around here, I’ve never seen officials be racist. I have seen plenty of parents, in particular PV and North Scott parents, be racist though. I’d be more worried about deplorable parents than officials personally.

I wish you had also asked them if North was “inner city”.

Lol. Ok dude. You polled people at a dinner party to respond on a message board. Jesus how pathetic. These people all piled in on a message board commentary?

You made a racist comment. Own it and move on. You literally went to those lengths to run back to this board and yet organizations within the music industry are moving away from drom the word urban because it carries negative connotations for black culture. That urban is being used to describe black culture in a stereotypical way that has racist undertones without ever needing to mention race. Just like you used it in your post to describe a school that is poor and diverse racially.

I'm curious how many of your dinner party from Bettendorf attended Davenport North. Bettendorf is the wealthy side if town isn't it? Pretty white as well. So you as a white man hosted a dinner party with wealthier white people from a white and wealthy part of town to discuss and justify your use of the word urban urban to describe poor black kids. Got it.

Maybe step away for bit and do some soul searching.

I was genuinely curious if my opinion was a majority or minority opinion and figured I had an excellent opportunity to ask a cross section of smart people.

Don’t feel bad, I’m wrong sometimes too.

Mods, can we move this post to the subtle brag thread? Thanks.

Yeah ok. You were very wrong on this one. Own it and move on.

Maybe don't poll the cross section of wealthy white people at a dinner party about racist tropes. Not a good look

And bragging about hanging out with rich people is something only a poor would do.

So what word is okay to call an area around a high school inside a city with a population of over 100,000? Asking because you have decided urban means black and rural means cracker.

You think basic white collar professionals are rich people? 😂😂😂

Now THAT is the tell of a poor.
Good response as you talk about poor black and brown kids. Are you seriously a sociopath of some sort? Everything a w or an L? You used a racist trope to describe black kids and justified it by a conversation you had with white wealthy people. And yes white professionals that work for the UI and live in Bettendorf are rich by comparison. I tell you I have family that went to North but you and your white friends know better. You are the definition of the liberal Malcom X was talking about. The absolute worst kind of white racist

Take a step back from your ego and maybe day a few hail Mary's or whatever sets your head straight. You have shown the ugliness of covert racism and you probably should take a break

You are a complete moron. It is amusing.

My family grew up in the Garden Addition. All went to West before North opened. West, North and Central are all urban Davenport schools. Period, the end.

Work harder to not be stupid

I haven't decided fhat at all Mr educator. You want to use the word urban as the identifier for Davenport North as you are talking about it being poor and black and brown you go ahead....it is racist but that sure doesn't stop educators when they suspend black kids in Iowa at much higher rates does it?

Have you ever been to Davenport North? I can tell you haven't. It is on the very edge of town and looks like a small town Hugh school. Urban is not what come to mind. Add in ghe fact that the word urban is a racially charged way to describe black culture without mentioning race and well....I guess you can do whatever you want. Kl

Marshalltown is a poor school with a lot of brown kids. I don’t think anyone calls it an “urban” school. Urban does not imply race.
