Denmark boosts Greenland defence after Trump repeats desire for US control

Army Maj Steen Kjaergaard of the Danish Defence Academy suggests it may have been Trump's intention to pressure Denmark into such a move.

"It is likely to be sparked by the renewed Trump focus on the need for air and maritime control around Greenland and the internal developments in Greenland where some are voicing a will to look towards the US – a new international airport in Nuuk was just inaugurated," he told the BBC.

"I think Trump is smart… he gets Denmark to prioritise its Arctic military capabilities by raising this voice, without having to take over a very un-American welfare system," he added, referring to Greenland's heavy dependence on subsidies from Copenhagen.

The Danish government has announced a huge boost in defence spending for Greenland, hours after US President-elect Donald Trump repeated his desire to purchase the Arctic territory.

Danish Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said the package was a "double digit billion amount" in krone, or at least $1.5bn (£1.2bn).

Yep. The government debated, voted and passed a billion dollar package in a few of hours.

Lasting approximately six hours, the German ground campaign against Denmark was one of the shortest military operations of the Second World War.
Denmark resisted Nazi control during World War II through a nonviolent and violent resistance movement:

  • Nonviolent resistance: From 1940–1943, the Danish resistance movement used nonviolent methods to resist the German occupation. These methods included an illegal press and sabotage operations against German property, railways, and companies that collaborated with the Germans.

  • Violent resistance: After August 29, 1943, the resistance movement became more violent.

  • Results: The Danish resistance movement achieved several goals, including:
    • Protecting Danish Jews

    • Maintaining the sovereignty of the Danish government

    • Limiting the amount of resources Germany could take from Denmark

    • Contributing to the World War II victory
Denmark's proximity to neutral Sweden also helped in the rescue of Danish Jews. By 1943, Sweden was willing to accept thousands of Jews and Danish insurgents fleeing the Germans. Over 90 percent of Danish Jews survived the Holocaust, more than any other nation on the continent.

That's awesome! Trump should do this with every country. Then the US wouldn't have to spend so much money on defending other countries. They could defend themselves.

The larger picture here is that the status quo for the last 80 years in post war Europe has been one of nonstop US largesse providing a safety blanket for the continent that has allowed them to enjoy enormous growth and prosperity - and it’s almost a third rail issue when politicians even broach the subject.

I forget who said it but a noted observer recently said that it was wise to take Trump “seriously but not literally”. He was right.
Greenland isn’t for sale. I’m not worried.

The Danes are about as intimidating as the Canucks. Ran into a ton of them in St Croix years ago, their slice of the Caribbean is a terrible version of paradise. Great people, but they struck me as quite basic.
