Wouldn't it make more sense that when we catch them, we hold them and do a full background/criminal history check, and if they have a clean record with gainful employment history, etc., we simply fine them, give them work visas, etc? A big fine, like $5k they can pay off in installments.

Being here illegal is just a misdemeanor after all, and we'd save a lot of money both in the cost of deportation and to their employers and help prevent more inflation and supply chain issues.

People in the US without proper immigration status face consequences such as deportation or being barred from re-entering the country for a period of time, but they are not typically arrested or charged with a crime unless they engage in other "criminal" activities.
