DeSantis suspending campaign…

What is it you're wanting me to do? I have no intention of ever voting for Trump. I am not a crazy person either. Democracy will be fine. 50% of one party which is 25% of all registered voters (all of whom are morons), will not be the end of democracy. Sorry.
I told you what I wanted you to do - to take it seriously. You don't need to vote for Trump but it is very easy to see what he wants to do. He will have the tools in place to hold power if he gets back in there. 2020 was just a trial run. Next to no Republicans, IN POWER, will vote against his desire to hold power. He wants authoritarianism and he found the loopholes that can help him get it.

Take. Him. Seriously.

They don't get to vote to keep him in power. That would take an amendment. An amendment to overturn the 22nd amendment. And that takes 39 states to go along with that. Him saying dumb shit he wants to happen is miles away from him every getting to that place. It takes way more than 49% of the Senate and 50% of the house to get that done. If we every get to a point where the important pieces start to move in that direction, I'll say "Hold on here a second". Let me know when that happens. Until then it's just every day political fearmongering and I'll just continue to ignore it.

Then it's too late. They voted not to certify the election. He has the Supreme Court. He will have lackeys in positions to help him keep power. Again, if he wins in 24, and loses in 28, with a Democrat going back into the WH, then I will admit you have been right all along.

The thing is, there are a lot of very smart legal minds/Constitutional and American historians, like Mark Elias who are explaining why this is a thing and shouldn't be dismissed. They aren't crazy and shouldn't just be ignored.

If I am wrong, no big deal. If you're wrong, we have a massive problem. Again, I hope you're correct.

The other thing, and I think Liz is implying this here is that he will just ignore the Constitution. He couldn't care less about it. Republicans will not cross him if holding power is his endgame.

Dude. What are you talking about? If he wins in 24, he's not allowed to run in 28....or ever again. ZERO states will allow him on their ballot. ZERO. The fact you can be so worried about something that literally has NO CHANCE of happening is insane. Especially since you keep trying to convince me and others that this is some sort of locked in reality.

Let me convince you of something that will help you. Let this occupy 0% of your thoughts from here on out. You'll be much better for it.

Head in sand. You're NOT listening to people who are a helluva lot smarter than the two of us. I am.

Well, if they those smart people are saying that Trump can win this election AND run again in 28, they're complete fvcking morons and I would suggest you never listen to a thing they say. And no, they're not remotely smarter than me if that's the case. Also, I'm sure those smart people have ZERO agenda or bias.

The GOP will have no issues running Trump while he is in prison.

As a matter of fact, they will celebrate it
You are absolutely correct. Just think if he's elected: a convicted felon with access to classified documents and top secret CIA info not to mention the nuke codes! Trump would be classified as a national security risk and should not be allowed anywhere near the White House. Unfortunately, his GOP supporters don't give a damn.

Honestly, she had to be drunk when she decided to endorse him. Now Trump is going to make her wear a ball gag and sit in the corner at the national convention.

She wasn't drunk.
She thinks that she deserves a spot on the national stage and her initial decision to not endorse a candidate resulted in her falling into DT Barnum's disfavor. Her only chance at being a VP candidate rested with Desantis and she decided that she had to push all of her chips into the middle.

If DT Barnum wins, she'll still be lobbying for a cabinet level position (Dept. of Agriculture). Problem is, Iowa won't be a contested state and there will be no reason for him to campaign seriously. Limits her chances to suck up to him.

More like 33%. Trump may get the R vote, but what independent that didn't vote for him in 2020 will vote for him in 2024?

It's going to be a crazy election.

There will definitely be independents switching their votes in 2024. BOTH sides.

There are voters saying "Anyone but Trump" as well as "Anyone but Biden".

Flip a coin for who is going to win this thing.

Agree 100%.

But I think the chances of appointing herself to replace Grassley increased.

AMEN. The ultimate moving goal posts are whatever it takes to make the vax look safe and effective. Pretty soon, as long as your arm doesn't fall off or you live to tell the tale of getting vaxxed will be the new safe and effective.
One of the most entertaining parts of this board is watching you try to make a point. It's like a toddler learning to ride a bike without training wheels. You'll get there someday!

I predict right now Trump will beat Biden. Mainly due to lack of Democratic enthusiasm for him, The cult will come out for Trump and the supposed Republican/moderate that wish they had someone else will fall in line. Going to be very low turnout which means Republicans win.
This is, IMO, a very valid concern. While my perception of the Biden Administration is far less critical than many, I fully acknowledge that there is an enthusiasm problem. Could be a strange election where down ballot races help buoy his re-election chances.

Probably . . . but I'm told (by many) that she feels as though she's "above" being a mere US Senator and deserves a more lofty position. I'm also told that she really wants to put Ashley Hinson in the Senate to replace Grassley.

There are many accounts of Obama trying to get Biden to take Trump seriously, but so far it just isn't landing. Kamala was on The View last week for the whole show and they pushed her on what they are doing for campaigning and she basically said last year she traveled around and talked to 15k college students and so far this year for 2 weeks she traveled around talking to people in South Carolina and other states.

Sure, yellow. Sure.

I'm starting to realize more and more each day that you have no idea how our government works or what our Constitution says about anything.
I also am realizing, TODAY, that you don't realize Trump cares NOTHING about any of this. You are acting like these are normal times and Trump is a normal person. There's now basically an entire party who cares nothing about the Constitution and will circumvent or ignore it. In NORMAL TIMES you are 100% right. Trump and his goals are ABNORMAL and there is a House and a SCOTUS that will back him up...not to mention his AG and DOJ, after he gains power.

I remember when the right was telling us stupid libs that Roe was established law and not going to get reversed.

Boy are we dumb for even thinking that was going to happen

Then it was "let the states decide: state's rights!"

Then it was "We're going to prosecute anyone who leaves our anti-abortion states and travels to another state to get an abortion"

Now we are at "When we take back the Senate, House and WH, we will get a nationwide ban!"

I don't remember that at all. I remember the right continuing to yell and scream that it was a states rights issue and it needed to be returned back to the states. For my entire life. Including an annual march in DC for it with hundreds of thousands of people participating in it.

I don't hear ANY of the same people saying Trump should be allowed to be a dictator and remain president for however many terms as he wants to. And the 50 rednecks in khakis who marched to the twin towers this weekend couldn't even handle taking the subway without issue, much less leading the charge in the removal of the 22nd amendment.

Exactly...they will no stop until they reach their end goal. Same with MAGA...they aren't EVER going to go away quietly.

Hinson?

Now that's funny!

You don't remember current Supreme Court justices saying it was settled law prior to their confirmation?

How convenient.

As much as i agree that a second trump term would essentially be a grotesque hybrid of the usual second term president corruption on steroids, and a vengeance tour, the idea that he'd stick around for a third (without an amendment) is just plain silly on so many fronts.

I am reminded of an old line my ConLaw professor used to use: "The Queen of England does not exist." Apparently, British law doesn't (or at least didn't) have any reference to the Queen of England. And yet, Elizabeth II was pretty clearly that person for nearly 70 years. Why? Because of popular acclamation and recognition, which is not dissimilar to that afforded President Biden even if one put some credence in the wackadoodle election conspiracies from 2020. Here, it's sort of the flip side - we actually have very clear written standards, and we are a population that actually pays attention to them, right up to the 9 blacked robe people on 1st Street NE.

In NORMAL times I would agree with you. Nothing about Trump is normal. What would have happened if Pence didn't certify? I'm listening to legal and constitutional experts and not guys on this board who have heard of the Constitution.

All he's gotta do is get 5 people on the SC who will uphold his "complete immunity" argument, and the Constitution goes out the window.

Aardvark seems blissfully unaware of this scenario...

Do you honestly think that Donald Trump peacefully leaves office in January of 2029 and reports to prison?

The silver lining in DeSantis flaming out is that once Trump is dead the cult will most likely die off. DeSantis did everything he could to be a more palatable Trump, but he couldn't inspire the same messianic loyalty that Trump did from the cult.

Just like 1930s Germany....
this time he will put people in place that will go along with what he wants to do. He wont have those people that will go along with him right to the edge, and then reverse course when the gaurdrails come out.

And what if Superman had been born in nazi Germany. Let’s not indulge in comic book scenarios.
