I just moved to a new community and know no one but thought about checking out the local sports even tho I have no connection whatsoever with the football team. Got me thinking, Do you go to High school football games in your community? If you do, do you have a family or friends kid playing?

I generally don’t. Went once on a Friday when wife was out of town. Thought I’d grab concessions for dinner. Except I timed it wrong and showed up as JV game was ending. So bought a hot dog, ate it and left before varsity started.

Had to lie to the ticket taker and tell them I got called into work, so it wasn’t as awkward

Yep…no family or friend’s kids play anymore, but we like to support the local team.

I have been the announcer at the high school football games since 1999. So much fun!

I want to but I am so exhausted by the end of the week I just want to sit at home. It sounds like a great idea until 4:00 Friday. When I retire I will probably go to a lot of high school sports.

Mr. Paris you should be there supporting your students 😊

Just giving you a bit of grief.

Yeah...but mostly because I have former students playing.

And I get in for free. :)

I do, but I work there and know the kids so it's kind of fun to watch the band and the dance team and the cheerleaders and just about everything except the actual football. They've won about 8 games over the past 5 seasons and have only made the playoffs twice in my entire career there. I've been there for over 20 years.

This town just isn't interested in having a winning team because any coach that came in and tried to do the things that would allow a team to be successful would step on the precious toes of certain community members and then they wouldn't have a job anymore. Then they lose all the time and lose their job after 4 or 5 years anyway. Wash, rinse, and repeat.

Sounds like you guys need to fire those certain community members and hire better ones.

I went to a few in the year or two right after graduating high school because I still had friends and younger brothers of friends on the team. Aside from that, just a couple games in more recent years where I went to watch some of my friends' kids playing in the game.

Unfortunately many of them are buds with or hold certain elected positions related to school organization so it's not that simple. I swear one of them has notches on his bed posts for all the football coaches he's run through there.

When my kids were in school we had season tickets and never missed. Friday Night Lights in Texas is a real thing and we also went to several basketball games when the HS had playoff teams.
My son played Varsity baseball and I just about lived at the baseball field for fall ball, JV/Varsity and Summer league. I was the Mom in charge of the concession stand, had the keys to the field lights and scoreboard and made sure the field was maintained. It was how I spent my non-working hours in the 90’s.
Now I’m a soccer/flag football Grandma and I love it.

I really like to but I work very early on Saturday mornings now so I can't. I used to go to several every year.

2-3 varsity a year, plus some JV/sophs/frosh too. I'm usually seeing at the least one game per week during the season. I have I believe 4 former bus riders of mine playing this year sprinkled across those teams, plus a couple cheerleaders and band members.

Hoping to go tomorrow night if I can get done with my shift early enough.

We just moved to the north burbs right down the street from Loyola Academy. Might take my 8 year old son to a game or two. Think they have a couple kids headed to Iowa, so gives me some reason to watch.

🤣 I do coach a junior high sport right now and then high school girls bball all winter. It makes it difficult to get motivated to go to football games.

Totally get that. We need to talk some girls basketball if we ever get the chance

Rural Iowa Friday night football games are lit. Living in a city, there’s just too much else better to do typically. Though this year the two HS near me have a stud edge rusher and running back who should make noise in college.

When my boys were growing up and in school I went to all of the home games. This year I will probably go to a couple; I will also get to one or two games of the team from the neighboring town, just to watch their star player - he's a DB who has committed to LSU. I know a lot of his family (his dad played for the canes, as did one of his uncles; another family member played at tOSU and in the NFL for a number of years.

I haven't been to a HS game since homecoming the year after I graduated. But there are national powerhouses full of D1 talent so close to me and has me tempted.

biggest game you ever reffed?
Hmmm that’s a good one. Pella vs Bondurant for the district title like 5 years ago was pretty big. Couple years ago I had a non-district game that was #1 2A Williamsburg vs # 1 1A Van Meter which didn’t mean anything but great game.

We don’t get any suburban CIML; they have their like 10-12 crews that they want only for them. We get at least one playoff game per year but it’s almost always a blowout.

I went to a high school game in Alabama about 15 or 20 years ago. I don’t recall the names of the schools but one started with a W and the other started with an N. Their uniforms were exact replicas of Wisconsin and Northwestern, including the distinctive helmet logos. I thought it seemed strange to see two Big Ten uniforms deep in the heart of SEC country.

I used to go to the home football games and playoff games where I used to teach. Even though I moved away, I still try to follow their games if they are streamed or have radio coverage.

I'm surprised they don't have you working either in the press box, lines, ticket sales, crowd control, concession stand, etc.!

Another one I think of is when I was in Kansas and was doing a game of their big school level on Emporia State’s college field. I can’t remember what the important of it was besides being a rivalry but I do remember getting a multiple police office escort off the field since fans were waiting for us.
