Dochterman says that once a couple QBs hit the Portal Iowa will be all over them (Brendan Sullivan visiting May 7)

What exactly is our "guard" now?
There has been an almost pathological resistance to making any change at that position outside of injury and even then it's made with great reluctance. I used to believe that Kirk just believed that once a guy was anointed the starter at QB that making any changes in season was more harmful than anything. Then that game at Northwestern happened where Petras played 2 series with a completely dead shoulder. Couldn't lob it more than 10 yards downfield, and I do mean lob. Padilla came in after that, but the whole thing was just inexplicable. Petras wasn't close to being physically able and yet they threw him out there anyway.

If a change is made at QB because of poor performance we'll know that Lester has been given the latitude to make those calls. It wouldn't happen under Kirk.

I read that Sullivan was in for a visit this weekend. I know something about it came up on my YouTube feed.

At this stage of the portal season, getting him onboard would be a huge boost to the quarterback room given all the uncertainty going into this season.

Like others, I have little faith in McNamara’s health and it’s painstakingly obvious Lainez isn’t ready. Frankly, if they could get both Booty and Sullivan, that wouldn’t be a bad thing. I know there’s a scholarship issue right now, and that Poholsky was a walk-on, but they’ve lost three quarterbacks over the last six months with no replacements to this point.

At worst, they need one more who’s ready to play now. Someone who could put up average stats would make it seem like the Hawkeyes got Patrick Mahomes in the offseason. Beggars can’t be choosers.

Nope. Visiting tomorrow.

I'm a Northwestern fan who thinks Sully showed improvement each season over the last and I'm sad to see him leave. I think he's the best QB the 'Cats had on the roster during spring and there has been scant public news about a QB from the Portal. I think running him off was a terrible idea.

The posters who seem fine with him moving on are largely the "premium board" posters who like to claim that they have secrets on the circle-jerk premium board. I don't know what inside info they actually have, but some of those posters are saying with a straight face that Jack Lausch jumped Sully during spring, but having seen them both in action last season, I just have to put trust in my lying eyes. The only way that Lausch could jump Sully is if the new OC is overly enamored with the idea of a running QB, and even there, Lausch didn't have much success outside of the UTEP game. The premium board club does suffer from groupthink, though (they're paying good money for those opinions).

thanks for the input

Brendan Sullivan is visiting tomorrow; it will be interesting to see if he signs with the Hawkeyes

Here's a story from this afternoon from the Gazette. As you will read, Brendan Sullivan (who's visiting today) appears to be the likeliest option right now for the Hawkeyes.

Examining some of Iowa’s transfer portal options at quarterback

IOWA CITY — Iowa football is not expected to go on a massive transfer portal shopping spree this month.

“I don’t anticipate us having to go out and get 10 guys or something like that,” Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz said last month.

But Iowa undoubtedly has a pressing need at quarterback.

The Hawkeyes are down to three quarterbacks on the 2024 roster — Cade McNamara, Marco Lainez and incoming freshman James Resar. McNamara is expected to be “able to go” in June, Ferentz said at the end of spring practices.

But even with McNamara’s health seemingly trending upward, Iowa’s current reliance on him at the position is risky. McNamara has not had a fully healthy season since 2021, and that’s not too far from the norm either. Iowa has experienced injuries at the quarterback position — injuries serious enough to sideline the starter for at least one game — in each of the last three seasons.

Many portal quarterbacks are off the board — Sam Huard (from Cal Poly to Utah) and Gavin Wimsatt (from Rutgers to Kentucky) are the latest examples — but some talent remains available at the position.

Here are a few of the options for the Hawkeyes:

Brendan Sullivan

Previous school: Northwestern

Years of eligibility remaining: 2

Brendan Sullivan appears to be the likeliest option right now for the Hawkeyes.

The former Northwestern quarterback left Evanston despite appearing to be the Wildcats’ probable starter for the 2024 season. He started four times and appeared in three other games as Ben Bryant’s backup in 2023.

The Davison, Mich., native completed 63.6 percent of his passes while throwing six touchdowns and two interceptions last year. He was 12-of-19 with one touchdown in the Wildcats’ 10-7 loss to Iowa at Wrigley Field.

Sullivan already has a connection with Iowa’s staff. New offensive coordinator Tim Lester recruited him during his tenure as head coach at Western Michigan. If his visit this week to Iowa goes well, it would quickly put questions about Iowa’s QB depth at bay.

General Booty

Previous school: Oklahoma

Years of eligibility remaining: 2

General Booty confirmed to multiple recruiting outlets last week that he has been in contact with the Hawkeyes.

Booty, a 6-foot-2 quarterback from Allen, Texas, did not attempt any passes in his two seasons with the Sooners. Before Booty called Oklahoma home, he threw for 3,410 yards with 27 touchdowns versus 11 interceptions in his one season at Tyler Junior College in Tyler, Texas.

Some obstacles could stand in the way of Iowa getting Booty. The Hawkeyes are certainly not the only ones vying for his services, and the situation could change if Sullivan makes a decision this week after his visit to Iowa.

So, they are human beings.

They are greedy human beings in this pay to play, very broken, system.

Several people agreed with Win1's opinion below. I simply stated that players aren't looking to lose anything they already have and that they're only looking to add.

If a player is making hundreds of thousands of dollars, he shouldn’t be on scholarship.

His scholarship should be paid for by his NIL.

Iowa has a new offense and a new OC. I think Lester can sell what he's doing to a lot of QBs who would be major upgrades in Iowa City.
I agree with you. Excellent point. Saying that our offense is a reason that wr or qb won't look at us because of Brian's offense. We can expect a better offense. With the motion, which i have been asking for, and his rpo plus emphasis on getting wr's involved, we should expect a much improved offense.

I don’t think college football players are any greedier than any other group of people.

I think you’re going a little too far, suggesting they are greedy. What would you call the coaching staff?

Those kids are doing the exact same thing any of us would do. Some of them are greedy, and some of them are altruistic. Just like the rest the general population. Calm down on saying these kids are greedy.

They are getting what they can out of the system they are living in. I agree it’s broken, but that’s not their fault.

Would it be greedy for you to get a raise from your employer, and then want to keep health insurance?

Humans are greedy by nature. We live in a capitalistic society that covets wealth. Get off your high horse.

Capitalism has nothing to do with it. Look at the oligarchs in Russian and Ukraine - not exactly a capitalist society.
Even here we have what used to be a broke bartender 3 years ago that is worth 29 million today in Congress, but not because of Capitalism, because she is willing to be bought and become part of the elite.

I’ll never understand the people who are upset at other’s for taking advantage of an opportunity. Everyone on this board would do the same if they were in these kids’ shoes. Anyone who says otherwise is a liar.

Well, except those that understand that from personal relationships to empires and civilizations, greed pretty much destroys everything it comes into contact with and is the ultimate downfall of just about everything you can imagine.

So does envy. I think there are a lot of valid reasons to keep the scholarship. I don't really have a problem with it. We had the same arguments when Brian Ferentz played. Should rich kids be asked to walk on? He earned the scholarship and the benefits from it. Why ask him to give it up?

What we really know now is that we will have 4 QB's that will have the ability to use their legs to make a difference (if Cade is healthy). That fact alone means that we will most certainly be seeing a different offense than what we have witnessed since CJ and that defenses will most certainly have to play us differently as well.
