Someone want to please explain why people are clamoring for this guy to come to the Hawks when his team is 24-9 with their best win being over New Mexico State?

As a reminder...Iowa is 21-9, playing in the Big Ten.

Flavor of the month. Remember Ben Jacobsen, he was the hot topic a few years ago. I understand he’s an Iowa guy, but I don’t think he’d be the answer. Personally after reading this board, no one short of Phil Jackson would make us happy.

I think most fans just want to see a change in Frans staff or philosophies in terms of coaching/recruiting/game management. He’s stuck to the same thing for 9 years and while it’s average, it’s still not good enough.

Or keno Davis. Rode his dads coattails for the one magical season there and flames out at providence. Ended up at central Michigan afterwards and not even sure if he’s coaching anymore.

Well, here are a few reasons: (1) He had three players returning from last year and recruited a bunch of guys that tied for their conference title after being to finish ninth and went 24-8 overall. And he put that team together in about three months. Look what Iowa has after NINE freakin' YEARS.

(2) He lost is PG in January. He lost his other starting guard about 10 days ago. And he lost the conference defensive player of the year who finished second for the conference overall player of the year minutes into the first game of the MVC tourney. So in the semis yesterday Drake was missing 60 percent of its starting lineup, yet it took a shot with 2 seconds left to beat them. That's some serious coaching. Darian DeVries didn't win coach of the year because he had Brad Butler doing his work for him.

(3) Drake looks far more energized, organized, and well coached than Iowa. Drake plays defense and rebounds. They pass the ball and dribble only for a purpose.

BTW: As for Ben Jacobson: I'd absolutely take him over Fran in a heartbeat. His teams are much like Drake. The kids play hard, are well-disciplined, and improve over their careers. Either Jacboson or DeVries would be welcome in Iowa City any time, IMHO.

Because our fan base hates everyone who actually represents the university and all of our coaches/players/administrators suck.

No fan in their right mind (who aren’t just venting and frustrated) should be thinking Devries would be an upgrade.

Not now, not after one year in a bad MVC. He coached his ass off with the injuries and short timeframe. But you don’t jump from there to a B1G job (a job that includes taking over a NCAA tourney team)

I hope that Fran shakes up his staff. He’s not going anywhere, but something has to change. You can emphasize defense and rebounding all you want, but if you can’t effectively coach it...it’s pointless. And being ‘in’ on guard recruits is a nothing more than a nice participation certificate.

Because they want change and are willing to grasp at straws.
Keeping Fran is signing up for more .500 big ten seasons for as far as the eye can see. That’s not the worst thing in the world, but it hardly inspires excitement.
I appreciate how Fran brought us back to respectability, but I can’t make a plausible argument on how he is going to get the program to take the next step.
I do believe that Iowa should occasionally actually compete for a conference title and actually make a sweet 16 once in a while.
We now have pretty solid evidence that Fran can’t do that.
I have no idea what coach can, that’s why it’s good to have a highly paid, highly skilled athletic director.

Drake lost to Colorado by 30 this year. It’s easy to look great in some powder puff league. How many ‘rising star’ coaches have totally flamed out when they have to coach and recruit against the big dogs. That list would be pages long.

I don’t think anyone outside of one or two posters are actually serious. But if Fran flames out in a few years and DeVries has continued to build something over 3-5 years at a no-name program with a couple NCAA bids, he’d be worth a look.

I’ll be very interested to see what his teams look like with full recruiting classes. One thing he has definitely keyed on is upgrading the athleticism of Drake, so it’s clear he understands team needs.

IMO the above 2 messages together sum it up best. He is a guy that many said should have had the Drake job 10 years ago, or another since then. He is definitely an intriguing guy, not for Iowa to hire in the near term, and maybe not in several years either. But I think he is a darn good coach and it will be fun to watch Drake in the coming years, and fun to attend a few games and have a few brews with the common folk.
