Most Impressive Wrestler:
Zain Retherford- absolutely tore through the NCAAs and made everyone look ridiculous from the top position. That bow he put Sorensen in was filthy. Tech falled and pinned his way through the tournament which is unheard of.
Toughest Wrestler:
Cory Clark- battled injuries all season and someone managed to pull of the NC. Gave up first takedown in quarters, semis, and finals and BATTLED back victorious in each match. Tomasello is going to have nightmares about that move Clark kept getting when he was in on his shots.
Best Legacy (Srs Only):
J'Den Cox- Walks aways as Missouri only 3x National Champion. Could have easily been four if it weren't for losing a tight match to Kyle Synder in 2015.
Cinderella Champion:
Vincenzo Joseph- Unbelievable. Takes away IMAR's dream of being a 4x NC in dramatic fashion. Crazy thing is Daniel Lewis had him beat in the quarters. Very unlikely he will be a 4xer with IMAR and Massa returning next year, and Massa being his same age.
Luckiest Champion:
Mark Hall and Dean Heil- Have my doubts he beats Zahid in the semis without the headgear point, also more controversy in his match against Jordan. Also lucked out Meyer didn't get his hands on him and out-horse like he did in Carver
.
Heil just blows my mind how he consistently wins these matches by scrambling out of shots and hanging on to win by one point. Couldn't watch him at NCAAs for more than a minute without my eyes starting to get heavy.
Best Wrestler to not Win a Title:
Pat Downey- Downey is one of the biggest savages I know. Kid was on his way to an undefeated record and a National Title. It is a shame KJ stole his dream on his way out the door.
Biggest Douchebag:
Dylan Palacio- After watching his interview after he beat Kemerer, I am convinced that he takes this award in dominating fashion. After he said all that BS in his interviews he went on to having one of the most mailed-in performances of all time, getting rode with his head on the mat for 11 out of the 14 minutes he wrestled.
Special S/O:
Ca$h me ousside Wilcke- From being the last one in tournament, to being a point from becoming an All-American. Couldn't say I saw that one coming. Hopefully this experience will help Ca$h build his confidence and will help him continue to come up with Ca$h money performances for the Hawkeyes at future NCAA tournaments.
