ESPN NBA Draft Analyst: Payton Sandfort has a Ready-Made Skill for the NBA. Invited to May 12-19 NBA Draft Combine

Payton going in the 1st round in this mock draft.

26. Washington Wizards: G/F Payton Sandfort

Ht./Wt.: 6-7, 215 pounds | Class: Junior | Iowa

Sandfort has a fluid shot that translates well and is consistent in his two-dribble, pull-up shot off screens. As scouts go back and watch film from and hone in on players who can move well off the ball and be productive on offense and defense, Sandfort stands out. He's an intriguing player who could play himself into the first round if he elects to participate in the scrimmages during the draft combine.

This is the type of false hope nonsense that will most likely lure him into the draft.

Not sure all that goes on at the combine. If Payton is forced to play man defense, in addition to showing his offensive skills, which are great, especially if he gets on a roll from outside, there will be mixed evaluations.

Is lateral quickness one of the tests? Payton's biggest weakness is his ability to play man defense on a quicker wing player away from the basket.

Ughh.....Payton did not test well (bottom 5)

If this guy's site has an accurate score, then Payton's vertical is one of the worst I've ever seen at the combine. Holy crap.

Hate to say this, because I'm going to root for guys to do well in workouts, but I have a feeling he's going to start plummeting down mock draft boards after this combine. Usually guys don't go through testing if they are this bad, but I don't think Payton was in a position to not do some of this stuff if he wanted to get an early 2nd round grade.

i was surprised that he was bottom 5 overall; didn't expect that

this doesn't help, either

I don't put a ton of stock in these combine scrimmages since there's 90+ games to watch on film of a guy. But the athletic measurables are absolutely what is going to hurt him. I think we all would have guessed that he was going to be below average in a lot of those going in, but they are even worse.
For reference, Joe Evans had almost double of a standing vertical than Payton.

I don't find it at all surprising that he has poor measureables. His athletic limitations will always be an issue. Watching many games over the course of the season and comparing him to other players at the 3 it was clear that he was very low on the relative athleticism scale in pure foot speed, lateral quickness and leaping ability.

With that, I could see a team using a second round pick on him. More nonsensical decisions than that have happened in the NBA draft. If he's getting info suggesting he's a likely 2nd round pick now is the time to take it in what looks to be a weak draft class

What was it?

If And the nba has changed since Korver was a regular player.

I'm not sure he would make it today.
Lots of speculation. Fact remains, Korver was one of the great 3 point shooters in the professional game… and if 3 point shooting is still important, you’d have to think he’d be an alternative. Plus, with Korver, there were a lot “factors” that gave him additional value to many franchises. But, central to that, he was one helluva shooter, and there is always room for shooters.

As an Iowa fan is it wrong that I’m thinking it’s not the worse thing in the world he doesn’t do well. More of a chance he returns? He lights it up odds of him staying in the draft greater.

this draft is considered weak; not sure about next year

he will have a lot to weigh, especially if some team tells him they will draft him if he's available (and Payton thinks it would be a good fit)
