F-18s sitting at CID today

I know someone posted an article about

Holy he'll I've never seen that one. That is unbelievable.

I know someone posted an article about those guys getting in trouble. Not sure if it touched on the aftermath much, but every pilot involved basically never flew in the military again. My Delta pilot buddy flew a trip with a guy that was part of that squadron (not actually in that demonstration) and said their careers all got burned.

The military types are just built different. There's a pretty big divide in the commercial pilot world between the college/flight school guys and the military grads. Back in 94 an air guy who had previously been disciplined (or lack thereof) took himself and crew out crashing a B-52 doing crazy shit they weren't supposed to be doing during a practice run for an air show. Probably the reason they have zero tolerance now when an incident like the Kinnick flyover happens.

Was the fly over cool...of course. Frankly there should have been criminal charges.

At first glance I thought the thread title read “Face Sitting at CID Today”.

I hate my brain. 😞

The Air Force said last month the four Talon T-38 jets were at an altitude 16 feet above the stadium's press box and cleared the scoreboard by 58 feet during the flyover, which amazed fans and was meant to honor military veterans. Their altitude of 176 feet above ground level was far below the 1,000-foot minimum elevation required for flights above a populated area.

Holy crap. Lucky this didn’t turn into a disaster.

I live on a canyon less than 5 miles from Miramar Air Force Base. These guys take practice runs right outside my back patio almost daily. It never ceases to impress.

I get out there to visit a customer a couple times a year. Miramar use to have much more military jet traffic when the navy top gun school was there.

Was at my mother’s house in IC today, and one flew right overhead about 200 feet up. You know how people compare sounds to jet engines?

Yeah, there’s NO COMPARISON

Low bypass turbofans. Entirely different ballgame from modern, commercial jet engines. 👍🏻

I was driving our car on vacation with the family near Colorado Springs and South of the air force base. All of a sudden the family starts yelling about a plane really low. We were kind of in a valley and the plane was strafing us (without shooting of course). I didn't see him coming, but with everyone yelling I looked in my rear view mirror and I saw a plane not more than 50 feet above the road pulling up steeply behind us. An air force neighbor said the cadets probably would get disciplined if the higher ups found out.
Quite a thrill in any case.

Clip each other at that elevation and one drops or veers. Hospital nearby. End zone stands.

I was just up at CID two hours ago, drove around looking but didn’t see them unfortunately.
Just flew over the house again on their way back to CR. Only saw 2. Heard them on their way to Kinnick, it did not take long to fly over and return, like 30-40 seconds? Maybe a minute?

I believe in the past an extra comes along in case there is a mechanical issue. All 3 did the practice runs, and all 3 crews came to the stadium to be honored, but just 2 did the flyover.

Did anyone catch where they were from? I couldn't hear over the crowd. I thought they said somewhere in CA, and that they were EA-18 Growler, the electronic warfare variant. Sadly one went down last week on a training mission in Washington, resulting in the deaths of both crew members. One of them participated in a flyover of a Super Bowl a few years ago.

So, I am a little puzzled about this. Do they mean there is a flyover as the Hawkeyes enter? I heard they don't want to do the flyover after dark, but we are really only talking a few minutes difference. Sunset is at about 6 pm, or, is this somehow related to a Swarm event?

The AD day-before-game email had these times:

6:27 Swarm
6:28 Flyover
6:34 Kickoff

Sunset is 5:59 in IC.
