Fall Camp nuggets...

I was a UNI employee for 25 years and put both of our kids through U of I. Believe me, employees of Iowa's public universities do NOT get free tuition for their kids. It is true, though, that many private universities offer this as a perk to their employees, or at least to their faculty and P & S stsff.
Yeah, my comment was meant to be on the polite side of snarky. It's a common misconception that children of faculty get their way paid ... but, as you rightly point out, that only happens at some institutions (and those institutions are usually smaller and private).

I wouldn't have minded getting free tuition

You’re right. Children of employees at a small private college I coached at got free tuition. I am unaware of any state schools that do it.

So far most of the camp nuggets sound good for the O ... but maybe a little disconcerting concerning the D. I suppose that ought to be par for the course given that we're going to be starting 3 new guys at LB who have never seen a collegiate start ... and none really have much positional experience either.

Thus, it stands to reason that each and every week is going to be a significant learning experience for our D.

On the flip side of that ... the implication is also that if the new guys can stay adequately healthy ... they also have a great opportunity to improve a huge amount through each and every week.

Whatever growing pains we experience this year ... we'll truly see the dividends next year. However, hopefully the O can score enough points this year to help ensure that we win a lot of games!

Is that good or bad? LOL
Good for me.

Does that just mean he's white?
I took it to mean that few if any DBs are going to be intimidated by Max Cooper lining up to run a pass route against them. White? Maybe. Some guys just chew up yards quicker than their stride would seem to suggest. When I watched his HS tape, I was surprised that Max often beat open field defenders that appeared to have an angle on him.... in other words, sneaky fast.

Only two couldn’t conform to the Iowa way. Boswell and Manny would be fighting for starting and nickel positions. Scary thin at corner especially w/ OJ injured.
Yeah ... hopefully the injuries to some of our depth at CB are minor (at worst)! If we're really so limited in CB depth ... that will make it tougher to match up against teams who are more pass-happy.

Even with all the depth they talk about on the DL do we not see Linderbomb burn that shirt? Feel like he is gonna be a really good one...and with Reiff coming on this DL could be silly good very soon.
How would the 4 games freshmen can play in and not count against their RS season look? Can each one be spread out like week 1, week 4, week 10 and then week 13? Or do they have to be played in a certain time span after they use the first one?

I don't believe there is any restriction other than that it can only be 4 games.

All indications seem to be any four including conference title games and bowl games. But I think there are still rules of how many can/will suit based on home/road and conference/non-conference games, so picking your spots isn't that easy. For instance, I imagine anyone good enough to travel for a conference road game is probably already burning their redshirting anyway. Also depends if certain games turn into blow outs or not, whether they'd actually get in to use one up. Sometimes OSU last year turns into a blowout that you wouldn't expect while a Ball State or NDSU might come down to the wire instead of emptying the bench in the fourth quarter.

Given what's been talked about - given that we'll be down 2 DTs against NIU ... I could see Linderbaum giving the Hawks snaps at the very least as a matter of helping keep guys spelled.

I also could see Linderbaum playing during the UNI game ... if for no other reason than the fact that the coaches will likely want to both give him reps AND because it will limit the reps of our top starters.

I'm not certain that I have much of a feeling for the pulse of the ISU game - at least as it relates to whether Linderbaum sees snaps. My primary vibe is that Reiff and Lattimore come back "online" ... so if they've been practicing well and if they continue to have a developmental "lead" on Linderbaum (and I anticipate that the likely should) ... then they'll likely be the primary ones with Matt Nelson getting reps at DT. Also, I'd guess that Brincks likely continues to get reps at DT too. With 4 capable guys getting reps at DT ... I don't know if that leaves a ton of positional snaps for Linderbaum.

Through the rest of the season, there are likely a few other games where Linderbaum could see snaps ... and they needn't be blow-outs ... but they could simply be games where the coaches like the match-ups and think that Linderbaum could help them limit too heavy of snaps counts to the top guys. Then, if anybody gets injured AND if Linderbaum is continuing to improve ... then maybe the coaches just burn the redshirt and let him play in as many games as possible (in a regular rotation).

Not only do many private colleges and universities offer free tuition to the children of faculty (and increasingly, staff as well; and increasingly to stepchildren as well), but many are members of consortiums that allow those offspring a very broad choice of institutions. I spent 21 years as a professor/chair/director/coach in colleges that were a part of "The Tuition Exchange," a consortium that included over 230 schools, coast to coast (now it's up to 672 schools in the US and three foreign countries); and the four children and stepchildren in our household got free tuition in Iowa, Illinois and Minnesota. At the time, we figured that the benefit was worth over $200K (nearer $400K now), justifying the disrespectful and abnormally low professor's salaries. I dearly loved my work in those private schools, but when our last one finished, I moved to the State University systems of Wisconsin and the US Virgin Islands, and the national systems in Korea and Ukraine as a Fulbright Scholar (thus 'Ukraine Hawk'). But it was a GREAT whole-family benefit.

I will put a clarification then, and say Top 4.

However, Groeneweg may be 3rd. We will see how Smith fares when the bullets start flying...

Even as Top 4, I bet we are the only P5 school with that dynamic.

My guess is that he finishes third among the WRs in receptions. It seems he has better speed, better hands, and more of a "this is my ball" mentality.

“Lastly, from the videos on this site, Pat Harty needs a haircut, shaveand a clean shirt! C'mon Pat”

Lol.. he reminds me of this dude...

QUOTE="BigOHawk, post: 5614505, member: 75719"]SIAP but just saw this across Twitter:
  • Max Cooper now solid 5th WR behind ISM, Smith, Easley and Groeneweg. That means Dafney, Young and Ragaini, etc further down list. BF says Cooper has sneaky fast speed.
  • ISM would be #1 RB if season started today
  • Riley Moss tearing up special teams, figures to play a prominent role, need a special teams captain similar to Amani Jones and Kevin Ward
  • Punter too close to call, HA! I knew you were waiting on that one!
  • Dillon Doyle looking comfortable at MLB, probably #2
  • Tyler Linderbaum per Parker "definitely one of the guys that can help us," so sounds like with Ced and Reiff out game 1 he'll get some snaps. Whether that's the 4 game Freshman waiver we shall see
  • Julius Brents looking like #3 CB already, wow
  • Lastly, from the videos on this site, Pat Harty needs a haircut, shave and a clean shirt! C'mon Pat! :)
Jump in if you heard anything else, Go Hawks!

Had to laugh at this one!

I have a feeling his a kid that they will take advantage of the new rule with. Play in 4 games or less an saves the redshirt.

KF made a good point regarding eligibility during his interview when the B1G Bus Tour was on campus: He proposed five years of eligibility for everyone (four and one-half years in reality). Why not?

I have liked this idea for awhile. You do away with the redshirt distinction. Do away with having to get a waiver for a fifth year based on medical hardship etc.

The cream rises to the top, my money is on M Recinos !
Thanks for the well-wishes, guys! My take on Woods' interview is that no one is a "lock", at any position, on ST. College sports are a competitive business. No one gets an award for just being there, or for what they did in the past, for that matter. The team has talented personnel, capable of being difference-makers on the field. I trust the coaches to make a fair assessment of their player's skills. I believe Woods is trying to motivate everyone to rise to their best. I share that same philosophy.

That being said, I like Miguel's chances.

Yes reading between the lines it seems obvious Linderbaum will play in Game 1. In a perfect world he wouldn't play more than 4 games to keep the redshirt, but if he flashes and plays really well it wouldn't surprise me if he got in the regular rotation. Things happen when opportunities come up, sometime unanticipated. I liked Linderbaum's explosive quickness and strength from the get-go, and it sounds like he's shown quite a bit already.

If a kid plays and plays well as a TR FR, are they even concerned about their RS? I get it that most DL and OL can really use that 5th year to develop physically and improve technique, but if you see the field as a TR FR why would you want to stick around in school 5 years, especially if you have enough talent to make it to 'the league'.

I must have missed that. When did OJ get injured, and will he be back soon?

1) Easley is still a walk-on. ( mom is a U of I employee so School is free)
2) lots of teams have had a really good walk-on make it to the field as a WR. I concur. BUT...

My contention is that no P5 team has 2 walk-on WRs in their top 4.

I don’t even think you will find it anywhere in all of FBS football.
I don't think he gets free tuition. I am paying full tuition for my Hawkeye son

That's more impacted by the quality of our defense, IMO.

I don't mean we necessarily go for it every time. (obviously if it's 3rd and 12 from the 48 we kick it.)

But Stanley can pooch punt just as well as the other two. With him in, teams would be forced to play punt safe...especially with the tight ends we have. We could have a play on deck with the option for him to check out to a quick pooch kick if he didn't like what he saw.

I know...pretty sexy stuff for Kirk. But hey...we ran the Lone Polecat last year. Why not?
