Ferentz visited Waggoner last night, UCLA also involved

I disagree completely. If the rumors are true, it looks like holding out has cost him multiple offers, including Iowa, ISU, tOSU (not sure he was always a first take for them), and some of his other big offers. I'm unsure how his recent season and film would have impacted his status if committed, but I don't see how this has helped him, coaching changes or not.
The recent developments are pretty fascinating insofar as to what it implies about what the coaches must be seeing, hearing, and thinking. Maybe they're concerned about Snyder rehabbing for a 2nd year in a row? With the emergence of Stone ... maybe Clayberg wants to transfer? He always had a preference to play on O anyhow. Thus, for the recruiting zealots out there ... it's intriguing why the Hawks decided to re-open our DB recruiting.

Also, something even smells concerning my speculation ... because if the re-opening of the DB recruiting coincides with a transfer ... wouldn't that also free up a scholarship? However, this doesn't jive with what Blair is saying about the Hawks having too many needs, and not enough 'ships to fill them.

Other possible thoughts along these lines ....
  • Finding a QB recruit has obviously been a priority - that's been true for months. Thus, it would make sense that they've simply been thoroughly vetting film before issuing these "late" offers. As others have suggested ... all the coach firings have perhaps opened up the potential for some poaching anyhow.
  • Our punting game COST us in the W-L column this year. I really wouldn't be shocked if the coaches set that as another high priority position to find (they might decide to fish in the graduate-transfer market for one ... because they cannot afford to have a "miss")
  • As alluded above - for whatever reason, developing safety depth has become a priority. This is presumably a behind-the-scenes issue. Also, we ARE thin at the position ... thus, it DOES behoove us to continue to build depth there.
  • WR arguably still is a "need" position. We're still young at WR and we suffered a lot of attrition at the position over the prior years.
  • Our young LBs lack experience, so it makes great sense that it would be a priority to land a JUCO LB. Even if the coaches like our young guys ... it's nice to have experienced guys to help "lead" them. Furthermore, as evidenced by our willingness to take on graduate transfers at RB and WR ... the coaches are demonstrating a little "urgency" in filling voids that can help us win NOW.
  • I had heard rumblings that the Hawks were still looking for an O-lineman in the '18 class. Most of what I had heard pointed to interior linemen.
Thus, the above points to the Hawks needing/wanting 6 guys. Furthermore, we have some deserving walk-ons whom they'd ideally like to give 'ships too. And, on top of all that, we still seem slated to have Nixon on board for this spring.

Thus, it really does seem to be a situation where the coaches have more needs than they have scholarships. With this sort of situation ... comes trade-offs and the need to make tough decisions.

Seems odd that Ferentz would go visit Waggoner and then they are suddenly moving on in another direction. I know he's a class act but would he need to tell him personally. Could had the case though, as we are reportedly no longer hosting DL Taylor. Something about new priorities.
I would surmise that the Hawks want to be as transparent to our recruits as possible about the change in priorities. Given that we have a weak toe-hold, at best, in the Des Moines area ... they're wanting to make sure that they don't poison the well at Dowling.

Also, if I were a fly on the wall during Kirk's visit ... I'm sure that he'd tell Waggoner that they'd like to take him on in the class if they could ... but they'd probably not know until late in the game (and there'd still be no guarantees at that point).

Who ya got?
Wiegers
Joly
Falconer
D. Young?
Duncan?

Also wonder if they put Brincks on scholly, he's played a lot for a walkon..is Gervase on full ride? If Jackson leaves early, then there's another open spot.
Yeah, definitely what I was thinking. Good point on Brinks. He had a good year and deserves a scholarship.

Thought toks is supposed to be a freak athlete for his size?
Toks and Toren are very different. Toks was redshirting this season to preserve his eligibility. I'd say that Toren is a more "natural" RB ... whereas Toks is a guy who needed to learn how to learn to run within our blocking scheme. Of course, Toren still could use to be a little bit more patient about letting his blocks develop. I've seen him already knock over his lead blocker on the 2nd level at least 3 times this year ... had he let the block develop, he would likely have gotten more yardage. As it stands Toren epitomizes a North-South runner. Toks reminds me more of a Jewell Hampton.

Wasn't it stated that Toks was scout team POTW several times this fall? That's encouraging, we could be back to a 4-headed monster this fall with IKM, Toren, Toks and Kyshuan Bryan.

Iowa rarely recruits west of Nebraska, so not very many obviously, only a handful when they go after guys that way. If they continue to recruit this California QB, Spencer Petras, he'll visit him for sure.

I know last year he visited Kyshaun Bryan and Josh Turner in Florida, Trey Creamer in Georgia, Brandon Smith in Mississippi, and Thomas Johnston in Alabama. If you want to include the East Coast, Ihmir Smith-Marsette in New Jersey. He also went to see Peyton Mansell and Matt Hankins in Texas.
Thanks Blair, but I'm sure greenlight will tell you these guys were all "on the fence", so it just doesn't matter.....

And that is why I said "some" not all!!

Good work with the !!!! usage, maybe some additional effort towards the 'some' 4-5* that do keep their mouth shut would pay some dividends. Fairly easy to avoid 'no' when you are competing Ohio, UNI, Ball State for recruits.

This is all you got? You were super vocal earlier and now nothing....sucks to suck eh
How many kickers do we have on scholly right now? it seems a couple of years ago we had like 5.
Second--this taking a QB in every class seems a little much for me as well, say we have 5 on campus, once you get to the 3rd you are on the decline pretty good if for no other reason than practice time and if you go past 3rd,,,,,,I would have 3 on scholly and if we have to go to a 4th some year there are other guys thta played QB in HS that could move back,
Hell, we have trouble having 2 QB's ready for a game, our starter gets hurt and it seems like our playbook loses 90%.

I believe Gersonde (P) and Duncan (PK) are the only ones on scholly...

Duncan is not on 'ship ... but I believe that Recinos has been kicking himself into scholarship contention. Otherwise, Gersonde is the only one on ship currently (that I can think of).

You just love putting words in poster's mouths. I'm not TN board guy so get that out of your head. I did not say a thing about identification - it's evident they do a good job in that regard. My argument here is that KIRK FERENTZ is not working hard enough to get recruits outside of our "normal" recruiting grounds. His staff tries, but I haven't seen him personally make much of an effort to reach outside the upper Midwest throughout the years. I may be wrong, but I doubt it because there's very little evidence to the contrary.

I get the efficiency aspect, but our ROI will always be zero west of the Rockies if we put in zero effort. We aren't going to get a single recruit from California if we don't try. If we don't try, we're never going to build any sort of connection or pipeline. It's people like YOU that are the limited thinkers. You miss 100% of shots you don't take.

You guys are getting the offense you deserve. Let's just continue to convert 2 star IL QBs to receivers and pray it improves.

That's very ironic. Everything you are saying about KF recruiting you've supported with ZERO evidence.

I th8nk frost ends up at Nebraska but it does feel like someone is going to be left holding the bag. The obvious answer is Tenn but arky doesn't have a coach yet either. POACH POACH POACH!!

Look, every college campus has hotties. But no, IC cannot compete with LA.
It certainly can....unless you like ladies with fake boobs, fake butts, fake eyelashes, fake nails, and no brains.

I also agree with previous posters that you could not pay me to live there. Traffic is beyond atrocious, waaaaaay too many people and very shallow (worked with many from Cali), beaches smeaches, zero privacy or peace unless you drive 60 miles to the mountains (3 or 4 hours to get there), and so forth. On the other hand, students rarely leave campus, so much of that may be moot.

What is he supposed to say. Blair's posts clearly showed that his rants were uninformed. Its not like he's going to go off on Blair like the rest of us dummies.....
I was hoping he would be accountable for his misinformation and apologize for being an asshole......I know I have been wrong on more than one occasion and had to eat crow. Granted me being wrong is due to optimism as opposed to being an asshole and constant pessimism........I just never understood how you could claim to be a fan of a program but yet constantly be a Debby Downer/Negative Nancy, IMO if you hate KF you hate Iowa football. Iowa football is a combination of Fry and Ferentz, I admire(d) both of these fine gentlemen personally

Is franchise Latin for "I completely make stuff up and I have no idea what the hell I'm talking about."?
Like when he stated he got recuited by heller in baseball who wasn't even coaching at the University of Iowa but was at UNI and somehow he magically ended up as just an average student in BF's poly science classes in which he only passed because he cheated off him.....meanwhile he was banging Jake Christianson's GF (as if that is cool- completely against man code=d-bag) and now is millionaire.....

I don't, but that piece of paper represents my skin in the game. What's yours? Posting on here? Going to a game or two a year? This university is on my resume for life, and, to a certain degree, the University of Iowa's national reputation is tied in with the success of this football program. So yeah, I care and want us to compete for championships on a more consistent basis. I'm not a ~.550 employee and I don't expect this team to be either.

Recruiting players is not the same as developing players. Stay on topic.

The only football related thing that matters as far as your piece of paper goes is hoping that the program does not bring a scandal to the school. If you or anyone else takes the success of a school's football program into account when evaluating a prospective hire, that person is a moron of epic proportions.

The fact that you seem to so closely tie Iowa's football success with the value of your diploma is, quite frankly, scary. Honestly, that makes me more concerned about the value of an Iowa degree than the football team's W/L record (mainly because someone of your intellect...or lack thereof...was able to earn one). I have a degree from Iowa in computer science. Never once have I thought the success of Iowa's football program had any bearing of the value of my degree. Now a Sandusky grade scandal...that's another matter.

Walter Mitty? Yeah, his b.s. showed totally with the Brian Ferentz comment. 2003 academic all Big Ten somehow was cheating off of this doofus.

I guess you haven't gotten the memo, but it was a slow day at work and that I was looking to cause a stir. Mission accomplished.

I still think KF can do more on the recruiting trail. 9 'out of network' visits is not impressive, especially when ~8 were already committed.

To put you all at ease, BF never cheated off me and the girl wasn't JC's GF, but there was one that we were both going after at the same time at a poker game in Currier in his RS year and she definitely chose me over the heir apparent QB1. That's how I knew he was going to be absolute garbage before he took a single snap.

I guess when you get caught in a shit ton of lies, its probably a decent tactic to spin it as you were jerking everyone's chain. Slow day at work and this is how you spend the companies time? But you said you weren't a .550 employee? Most people aren't falling for it and your credibility is pretty much gone. Enjoy!
