Fight Night

IMO he was trying to keep in the spirit of the evening by trash talking, but there were a couple of serious problems. First, the key to that is being funny. If you're funny it's obvious you're joking and trash talk comes across as good humored, otherwise it just sounds angry. But if you're not gifted at humor it's damn hard to pull that off, and TG is clearly not gifted. He also didn't give any visual clues that he was joking, which combined with the absence of wit made it look like he was stone cold serious.

I think he shouldn't have been out in that position.

I totally agree here. If Brands was invited and committed to do the thing he needs either do it or send the proper person. Throwing Gilman into this at the last minute is putting him in a bad spot. Obviously trying to roast people is not a natural for him and I don't think we needed to see him try to know that.

. . . It's not like, at 23, he's been up there giving speeches for a bunch of years . . .
^^This. Not many 23-yr-olds are skilled in public speaking.

^^This, too. When you roast with a smile, everyone knows it's in fun. When you roast without a smile, it comes off as angry, hateful, and personal.

It’s as if you guys didn’t know Iowa has a tough guy reputation?
Well, I think the tough-guy reputation sticks if the program is winning championships. Without the championships, the tough-guy schtick comes off like the Oakland Raiders.

are you saying the event is supposed to be an opportunity to talk about how awesome the donors are?

sounds super altruistic.

that sounds like what you're saying. it also sounds vain af.

iowa wont be back next year. so the other schools can talk about how awesome the donors are by themselves.
why are you such a dick?

Some things that Gilman said were not really needed and he didn't have to swear that much. But like others said, it was supposed to be a roast session and Schwab did say that it was all in fun and they were supposed to roast each other. I don't necessarily think Gilman had to say the part about not wanting people to cheer for him as a team USA member, but I agree with Chief and can somewhat see his point of view and why he said that. Also, Gilman did what Gilman does and he spoke his mind. He never has and never will care what anyone thinks about his opinions. I was also a big fan of Metcalf as a hawk but I liked the part about him wrestling dresser, metcalf, etc. he responded about him and the hawks ready to wrestle anyone anywhere and I thought it was kinda funny. He went to far at times and maybe said things that he shouldn't have. But that's Gilman for ya and that's what people had to expect.

Lastly, @MVPFAN I didn't want to quote your whole post just to show you my opinion on gilmans speech, and I also agree with a lot of your things and like you as a poster... but, you said "obviously trying to roast people is not a natural for him..." I actually believe he did do a pretty good job roasting people based on how much some people are overreacting. He struck a nerve with some people and even though he might not have done it in the funniest way, he definitely got the roasting job done.

Roast he did no doubt. Like i said before, similar content with a more polished delivery and it would have come off as he was intending.

This.

Lot's of comedians drop the F bomb, so that's not the issue. But an event like this should be done in the spirit of helping wrestling, and taking humorous potshots at other schools and competitors.

Staring down someone while saying 'you suck' and challanging others to fight in the parking lot .....sounds more like jr high school.

Not a great night.

I apologize if this has been stated but I didn't see it in the thread.

Why is Iowa not going back next year?

Gilman sounds like a guy with chip, although in context the stuff he said wasn't so shocking "in these times".
On the other hand, it would be better for the program's public relations if he'd demonstrated better wit and reduced crudity.

Is it true Gilman doesn't read the books he hauls around? Word on the street is he listens to the audio books and has a book in hand claiming to read them. Guess he started doing this after an opponent said he wasn't to bright. Am I wrong? Gilman, can you answer this and shut those people up?

I have it from a reliable source that he reads the books first, then he goes back and buys the audiobook and listens with book in hand the 2nd time through and takes notes. Great for retention. Smart dude.

LOL, what a dumb conversation to be having with anyone.

Actually, I agree. That learning technique is great for dyslexics.
Well played DonHawk!

The part about telling people that didn't like him before to FU is something I have thought he should feel the whole time. I would feel the exact same as him in the situation.

"Hey I hate you as a person but since your on my team now you are all right" a FU is what is deserved to that person.
How should PD3 feel about you guys??

PDIII did not look good. Wait for the complete meltdown Iowa! We are all waiting. hahaha. Brands' last straw this season.
He didn't? He lost to Richard Perry and a stud Russian in close bouts. He beat the other pretty handily. Perry is a stud as well.

Thought he looked alright. On par with a college kid that could win a title at 184.

You need to go listen to a Tony Robbins audible book or something yourself. Seem like you have some deep seeded issues boiling up on a rivals message board.

I'm willing to bet Perry and PDIII are close to the same age.

I finally got around to watching this. I think some of you are just a little too soft... or old and crippled... or just plain oranges (cat words). This was a roast in a collage town bar. Grow a pair and move on. Gilman did a fine job and I am proud that he is a Hawkeye.
