FM: ”those two guys can run that’s why I recruited them in the first place”

“Riley, he is really getting there”

“Josh, I’m proud of him, he had that injury, it’s a little set back, but both of those guys are effective, and they’re going to get more and more playing time”

Dolphs resp - that’s good to hear, I was going to ask you if they were going to get more minutes, I think they earned it the other night at the Kohl center.

FM: “They certainly did, and especially with some of the teams in our league that are really big.”

Good to hear hope that we see them both get good minutes at home Thursday.

We definitely need more post help, but do we really need a bigger rotation? Hopefully this means fran will stop playing FR so much at the 5!

I’ve Always been an Ogundule fan, we don’t need him to play 30 minutes a game, 15-20 would suffice. He shows a lot of hustle out there when he is playing and I think he’ll prove to be a good rebounder and defender - where size can be a plus. Riley surprised me the other night with his shot blocking and defense. If either can give us some minutes it’d make a huge difference.

I do think Riley has pretty good feet for his size for the limited minutes I have seen him this year. Have no idea on offensive game since he basically just passes and has had some clean up buckets.

5-10 min per game would be a lot for Josh now

I think Fran is being kind with regards to Josh's weight. Over 300 is pretty vague. As i stated before... was told Josh was closer to 350 than 300.... think 335 ;)

Im not disagreeing with just an observation of JO, you can tell he put in a lot of work in the offseason to take off bad weight. Another offseason like that, I think would be beneficial for him.

Just a thought here...not claiming it to be correct....and it may be complete BS....but I wonder if the fact that Rebraca just hasn't quite been what we hoped for, if that is part of Fran's thinking that JO & RM are all of a sudden playing better?

I see the potential in both of these young post players...and the main weakness to their game at this point seems pretty obvious as well. Josh O just doesn't have the physical conditioning (still) that it takes to be on the floor enough that he gets really in sink with the flow of the game. Riley appears to me to have a very high end to his game...he just has to get stronger. I think that in short bursts he can be a contributor, but as soon as the opposition post gets a little time against him they quickly figure out they can push him around.

Maybe, for both of them, they just need enough time on the floor to start to make some headway on shoring up their weaknesses?

He didn't comment on wanting RM to be "nastier" because he's such a nice kid. He's also technically a senior in high school, but I really think Riley will be pretty good. If he keeps growing too, he will be a 7' and same with Owen Freeman, we could have 3+ 6'10 guys on our team all of a sudden in two years.

And Patrick needs to damn near double the weight he gained last year.
I re-watched Patrick in the game against GCU, and he looked REALLY good. One of the only guys crashing the boards offensively, coming off screens quickly and slashing to the hoop hard, was hitting his dumbass floaters, his shot selection in small sample size was great. It seems now that he is required to score more points, he hasn't gotten used to the role. I almost wonder if he's a little banged up or his health is not perfect. He looks much slower just looking at this year's highlights compared to the tournament last year, cuz he played well in both games, as did Keegan.

GCU was similar to a league game, or Oregon. 😉
He plays like a 14 year old girl.
Runs around with his head in the clouds and is clearly afraid to mix it up.

Ogundule and Mulvey deserve more minutes than Rebraca, based on what we've seen. And if Iowa wants to win, Patrick needs more pine time unless he shows that he wants to rebound. Otherwise, give most of his minutes to Ogundule and Mulvey. If Iowa can't/won't rebound, they cannot win very often.

I don't know if you saw the box score/stats from the last game, but Patrick was our leading rebounder....by at least 3 rebounds if I read that correctly.

I remember hearing this about Kris in the second half of last year. He rarely saw the floor.

I wish Fran would not have blown a year of eligibility for RM. I don' t understand that. Use the redshirt to get him right and step in for FR next year. Did they think he was going to put on 30 lbs. of muscle to compete at the 5 in the B1G? Baffling to me.

IU will be a bad matchup for the two big frosh. Davis is way too quick and their other big guy is not that tall but quick to rebounds.
I want Josh to play more minutes so maybe he could use his strength to push Davis out further in the paint for a few minutes each half. Riley should sit this one out.

Been stated on here multiple times and came straight from Frans mouth. He doesn’t force players to redshirt or not, he leaves the decision up to the player. Gives advice and lets them decide. It does appear Mulvey probably should have redshirted, but it wasn’t Frans decision that he didnt.

I think IU will be a learning experience for them, but they both need to be out there and tested against one of the best bigs in the league.

I get it is up to the player. I question the type of advice Fran gave RM. I find it hard to believe Fran advised he would average 2 minutes per game in the B1G unless he can put on a bunch of weight and RM decided to burn his redshirt anyway without putting on said weight....

I agree with 90% of this. I think if Rebraca could get on the court in the forward position with one of the centers, it would greatly improve our rebounding. Also, Fran needs to spend 50% of practice time right now working on finding people to box out and aggressively going after the rebounds. The hawks are TERRRRRRIIIIIBLE at early boxing out right now. They are so late that they are often getting pushed under the boards and have no chance to get a rebound. It's killing them.

I get this...understand the feeling, but I have to believe that Fran see's these guys everyday in practice and has chosen Rebraca based on those observations. NOW he has started to see improvement in both of the young posts and hopefully they get a chance and prove to be ready.

Patrick has definitely gathered more rebounds the last few games. He needs to use his length and athleticism to be more of a consistent factor there and on defense. JW averaged 6-7 rebounds per game out of that position. That's where Patrick needs to be.

Height isn't the be all, end all when it comes to winning basketball. We've had plenty of big guys that sucked.

We have 3 big games coming up against potential NCAA Tournament teams:

* Indiana (projected 8 seed)
* at Minnesota (on the bubble)
* at Rutgers (has that big home win vs Purdue)

The home game vs IU is almost a must win. Not sure we want to be 1-4 heading to Minneapolis.

IU starts 3 forwards and 2 guards

IU's forwards:

6'9 Trayce Jackson Davis
6'7 Miller Kopp
6'8 Race Thompson

Fran needs to figure out his 9 or 10 man rotation.

Nice to see Josh finally in cardio shape where he now might be able to give extended minutes when needed.

I also think even a little bit of experience as a freshman pays off a lot for a sophomore. I believe Ferentz has said something to that effect as well. We are going to need Mulvey next year, we can't wait on him being a 5 year project.

reminds me of when we blew a redshirt year for Gabe O

Lol. They play defense, we don't, and our offense looks like a Jr. high team.

Yeah, I agree. I meant it as a byproduct of developing young post players. It often doesn't directly translate to meaningful production in terms of rebounding or defense for certain programs. Let’s hope it helps though, because god we could use some more height and better defense/rebounding.

Fran is consistently positive about his players in public comments and doesn't through them under the bus. I like that a lot about him.
On the flip side, sometimes the hype train outpaces reality and his comments don't translate into what is seen on the court or in the moves that he makes with lineups and minutes distribution.

Even more impressive. He was a friend of mine back in the day so I should have known that. 😊
He was a neighbor of mine growing up, but I only knew his sister. The guy could jump out of the gym. Amazing rebounder.
