FM on Riley and Josh

I’ve Always been an Ogundule fan, we don’t need him to play 30 minutes a game, 15-20 would suffice. He shows a lot of hustle out there when he is playing and I think he’ll prove to be a good rebounder and defender - where size can be a plus. Riley surprised me the other night with his shot blocking and defense. If either can give us some minutes it’d make a huge difference.
They can obviously give some minutes, whether they play some minutes is the question.

Lol. They play defense, we don't, and our offense looks like a Jr. high team.
I don't claim basketball expertise....but according to the stats and the experts our offense is pretty high level. I hardly think our offense looks like a Jr. High team.....absolutely no credibility to that claim. Defense is a different story.

Just what has Josh shown that makes you think he is an answer to our problems? I agree if you are going to play him give him more that 3 trips down the floor. I also am not sure he is more than a roll player until he improves greatly.

Counterpoint, what makes you think he's only a role player based on the extremely small sample size? I don't have a judgement either way but I do think he can't do any worse than what our post presence is now (nothing).

We have 3 big games coming up against potential NCAA Tournament teams:

* Indiana (projected 8 seed)
* at Minnesota (on the bubble)
* at Rutgers (has that big home win vs Purdue)

The home game vs IU is almost a must win. Not sure we want to be 1-4 heading to Minneapolis.

IU starts 3 forwards and 2 guards

IU's forwards:

6'9 Trayce Jackson Davis
6'7 Miller Kopp
6'8 Race Thompson

Fran needs to figure out his 9 or 10 man rotation.

Nice to see Josh finally in cardio shape where he now might be able to give extended minutes when needed.
This is a make or break game for the Hawks.
IU has not won in a true road game this year.
Iowa has to protect the home court to have any hope for a postseason.
Need the students to create a tough gym on Thursday.
IU is a fragile team if they are as poor from the perimeter as normal on the road. Cannot let Phinisee (sic) get going from three.

Just my expert evaluation. I guess the best example is Purdue. He more than held his own against some big and talented players.

what I have seen of his footwork is not very good.

Does anyone really think that Josh O or Riley are THE answer to the team's defense and rebound woes? If so I haven't read that anywhere.
What I think some of us would like to see are more stretches during meaningful portions of the game where they are on the floor. Maybe Josh is only good for 5-7 minutes and then he's drained and can't make it up and down the floor. But I'd like to see him for a couple of those 5-7 minute stretches per game where he gives everything he's got. Similarly with Riley. If he can give 10 good minutes a game in a couple of 5 or so minute segments that could help.

How about just tell him to focus on defending and rebounding while he's out there. Couldn't hurt.

Just a thought here...not claiming it to be correct....and it may be complete BS....but I wonder if the fact that Rebraca just hasn't quite been what we hoped for, if that is part of Fran's thinking that JO & RM are all of a sudden playing better?

I see the potential in both of these young post players...and the main weakness to their game at this point seems pretty obvious as well. Josh O just doesn't have the physical conditioning (still) that it takes to be on the floor enough that he gets really in sink with the flow of the game. Riley appears to me to have a very high end to his game...he just has to get stronger. I think that in short bursts he can be a contributor, but as soon as the opposition post gets a little time against him they quickly figure out they can push him around.

Maybe, for both of them, they just need enough time on the floor to start to make some headway on shoring up their weaknesses?
Both have been playing better. Rebracca a 4 not a 5. Can’t keep getting hammered on the boards. Might as well try the two big guys. I doubt it could be worse. Fran’s big mistake was not playing JO against Illinois after how he performed at Purdue. Neither of the two
I believe he was 6' 4"
Correct.

You’re barking up the wrong tree if you’re complaining about the offense.

We were completely discombobulated against Wisc. Hopefully we don't look that inept Thursday.

I would rather take some lumps this year and get Josh and Mulvey ready for next year. Rebraca plays hard, but isn't capable of more than what he has shown. I would be curious to see what a lineup with Josh/Mulvey and Rebraca can do. Rebraca is supposed to have a mid-range game, which based on his FT shooting seems like a stretch.

Iowa can't keep getting destroyed on the boards. TJD for IU is a bad match up for all 3, so maybe Keegan and Kris can keep him in check. It's inevitable that some guy mired in a season long slump will shoot lights out against Iowa, so hopefully Perkins, Joe and Ulis show up.

Students won’t be back till next week since classes don’t start till Tuesday the 18th, if they are even having in person classes. Besides, the students don’t really show up anyway, which is sad in itself.

Kris will enter the game 11 mins in, we are only down 16 at home, once TJD and Race go to the bench. He will come in for Connor who has been subbed in for Rebraca since IU has smaller bigs, Fran thought Connor would be a better match up on TJD.

😏 Frantology 101. Lolz kidding but could totally see that happen.
