So many things like this show Barta was so bad at his job, it's almost impossible to have been any worse.
Not very often in the world of college hoops. And it was a trade off....Fran was in the lower half of BT salaries and this is one of the reasons it was agreed to.

Its all part of the negotiations. College basketball coach buyouts can be reduced or even eliminated if the coach gets hired by another university, often through provisions in the contract. Fran and his agent wanted the full buy out, even if he got a new job, and Gary agreed to those terms.

Fran was paid $3.4M (40th highest paid in the country). As you can see below, another $600,00 would have put him as one of the top 24 paid in the country.
Bill Self is the highest paid coach in the country at $8,803,800.
$3.0M puts a coach at 46th highest paid in the country.
$3.5M puts a coach at #38.
$4.0M puts a coach at #24.
$4.5M puts a coach at #18.
$5.0M puts a coach in the top 12.
DeVries apparently is at that $5.0M mark.
