Freaky Spencer Fact

Once they raise it then it’s a fall, the slap of the mat let’s the wrestlers know. That’s why a good ref looks away when they raise their hand.
All good, he got the pin. That's what matters, now if he wouldn't have got it later I'd be right there with you. 🤣🤣

(usual preface of me never having wrestled..)
Was there a split second where Lee thought he might be in trouble there? (or actually be in trouble?)

Would a mere mortal wrestler be in trouble in that position?
I got a little nervous, but maybe spencer knew what he was going to do as soon as Wit had that hold...

That was a very well-executed cow catcher against one of the greatest college wrestlers of all time. I’d estimate that about 90% of 125’s in Spencer’s position would have gotten stuck and 0% outside of Spencer would have turned it into a fall of his own. The amazingly quick reaction time by Spencer to hip over in mid-air and land in a pinning position was nothing short of incredible.

I think outsiders (non-Iowa fans) sometimes want to believe that Spencer just happens to be really good at tilts and bars and that otherwise he isn’t all that special a wrestler. The truth is that this kid is just so dang good at tilts and bars that he rarely needs to do much more. When he has to focus on takedowns, he’s outstanding on his feet. When he has to scramble, he’s far and away the best at 125. When he has to react to a rapid-fire pinning hold from neutral, he does so naturally without even thinking.

This kid has almost super-human body control, spatial awareness, strength, and mat IQ. The sport comes so naturally to him that he never really needs to think much out there — he just lets his instincts take over.

Watch closely, wrestling fans — we’re witnessing something extremely special. I’ve never seen anyone better at the college level. Kid is the definition of a unicorn.

Thanks for the insight.

I watched that first match against tomasello again that someone posted... It was weird to go back to a time when you didn't just expect to see Lee dominate whoever was in front of him. NaTo was a damn good wrestler, and even got decent shots on Lee, but Spencer came out on top, or at least prevented a TD on nearly all of them. And on top of that, he's had what, 8 months of being fully healthy under 'normal' wrestling conditions in his college career?

Dude is just incredible, even to my novice eye.

Only two weekends left as a hawk, but so many expectations it will be tough to even enjoy until he gets his hand raised Saturday night
