Freshman

Flemming then Moss or Moss then Flemming.

Not counting BE as a frosh but I think he will see some time early in the season as well.

Just to throw a wrench into the gears, if I were McCaffery I'd play the experienced guys and Jones, Baer and Ellingson first. Then with about ten minutes gone in the first half I'd call a timeout and put Williams, Fleming, Moss, Hutton and Wagner in all at once. :)

I mean, it's Sioux Falls. Let's have some fun.

If a player gets on the court in a regular season game, does that burn their possibility of redshirting? It's easy to see how Fran could find minutes for all of the players in some of the early season games, but if Jones, Baer and/or Ellingson are in the regular rotation and everyone stays healthy, Fran will need to decide whether it makes sense to redshirt anyone. Generally, I am not a big fan of redshirting players, but there are good reasons to redshirt, beyond injuries. It makes sense when the team already has positions covered, if you have players, who are working on skills to play a new position (Williams) or need to get stronger and let their game catch up with their growth (many bigs out of HS). In our case, I still think at least one of the wing players is going to transfer in the next two years, because there just isn't enough playing time to share.

Sioux Falls is one of our two Exhibition games this year.

That's why I asked about regular season games. Does one minute of playing time in a regular season game disqualify you from being redshirted (not considering medical redshirts)? I think it does.

It certainly does. By the time we play our first regular season game, still well over a month away on 11/13, Friday the 13th, we'll have had the two exhibition games and plenty more practices before any decisions have to be reached on redshirting.

Please don't get the idea I was advocating or predicting that Jones, Baer and Ellingson would be in the rotation ahead of the freshmen. I was simply having some fun with the notion of which freshman would see the court first. Heck, save 'em for a bit. Put them in all at once. Like I said, have some fun with it. Besides, why give any opposing coach down the road an early clue as to our true intent?

I think Fleming will play quite a bit off the bench for us. I think Moss could get some time as well but I'm not sure if he is a 2 or 3 or potentially could play both. I hope Wagner is ready to play because he may have to provide depth.

Dan I like this rotation but only against SE MARYLAND BALTIMORE COUNTY EASTERN SHORE.

The Sioux Falls scrimmage isn't until October 29. More important questions before then: What happened to the shirts and skins scrimmages? Is there one happening before the Illinois FB game this Saturday?

I'm really interested to get first hand accounts after Mac's little morsel about Moss, Fleming, and Williams.

I think this as well ^^^^....and Fran will play his best players whoever they are? Speaking of Wagner

Take a look at those pics posted in this forum of the BB work out camp at Kinnick and gotta say, all the boys look mighty fit and probably more impressed with the true frosh filling out especially Ahmad Wagner....dang, the next Brandon Dawson he is filling out to be. We need this type of player. He came to Iowa City as a great athlete, well built already but in the few months he's been in Iowa City, Kirk would take him in a heartbeat if this BB thing doesn't work out for him. Just impressed with the work ethic and physical gains I am in seeing with all the players.

I've got a theory. Things are so gol danged awesome that McCaffery is playing it closer to the vest than he usually does.

It could be that the in-house competition is intense enough that he's keeping scrimmages behind closed doors as much as possible to protect egos. The FB team's success has even given him an excuse to keep team business under his hat more this year. Hopefully find out more Thursday.

Shirts vs. Skins are pretty much a thing of the past. Volleyball has used football saturdays more it seems to draw interest as well as with the new practice facility and now that teams can actually practice earlier in the year for limited time it makes these less likely in the future as well.

Fran and Margaret's annual Cancer fundraiser is Oct 15th I believe. We might get some tidbits coming out of that

The Hell with Volleyball .

So, you're saying we could use him on the football field?

No ... never been a fan of crossing over...I don't think Kirk or Fran would appreciate it either. He needs to stay with the sport he loves and I'm sure Kirk's players don't feel they need the help.

Its so easy to get caught up and excited with the freshman...saw Wagner in PTL games..thought he had a B1G body then...he just looked so much bigger in the shoulders...I'm sure Iowa's strength coach & program is the reason..

ok off to play 18...everyone have a great day

You stole that one from me, eduneer ;)
Really, though, I've been hoping Wagner would be part of the back up mix inside as I think they are in dire need of some muscle if Woodbury has foul trouble.

Who's the first freshman to see the court this year?
Given that Iowa needs to get Williams experience as he will be the only returning pure PG next year, I think he will get time early on spelling Gesell and Clemmons. I don't really know if that will continue into the year but I hope it does as Iowa will need him to be ready next year. Regardless of what some think, neither Fleming nor Moss are going to play the point with any regularity unless Williams is a total flop. And I do not see that becoming a reality.

Think this will be the case for the first frosh on the floor. Williams will get all the clean up duty Fran can find at the point. All the frosh will find time preseason. Some might surprise but I suspect IM and AF will be the most prominent.

Flemming, AIAEC. I was touting him back before all the others, saying he would be the star of this class. He has a Kingsbury attitude on him that this team needs.

I not only think he will play a lot as a freshman, I think he will be a pretty big contributor, immediately.

I also think one of the freshman will end up transferring.

And I think Dale Jones will remind us why we need to stay away from Juco players.

Top 10 will be:
Uthoff
Gesell
Woodbury
Jok
Sapp
Fleming
Uhl
Hutton
Jones
Ellingson

Hopefully Woodbury can stay on the floor for 30 minutes. I think gesell and Jok play 30. Uthoff at 35. Guys like Fleming and jones are instant offense guys. I could see moss playing a lot and so will uhl and clemmons. Sounds like moss and Fleming were terrific in a shirts skins scrimmage. With uhl at the five, I don't see him as aback to the basket guy, more driving and he can handle it. Just need him to defend "5s". We shall see how things play out. Should be a fun year.

Sorry, but if you're talking average minutes I can't see it. Woody staying on the court +25 would be a major step forward for him: 25-26. Jok's going to have a lot of competition to average 30: 25 max. MG will finish the year injured if he tries to average 30: 27 maybe. I'd like JU to average no more than 32 so he'll have something left at the end of the year.

Joke is in better shape and gesell can average 30 mins. They both can. Uthoffs the best player and averaged 30 last year playing at 205 and played really, really well. He is stronger and better now so I don't see why he couldn't average 35. Hard to predict with woodbury but because it depends on foul trouble.

No problem Doc.....I am just glad to see others are seeing what I am seeing with Wagner and the eye sight is still OK. Holy smokes he looks great....right away Brandon Dawson for me and knowing just how all around of an athlete he is and what great hops he has.

There are a lot of players who have hit the strength and conditioning. Jok looks fantastic, Woody has gotten cut with some extra weight and it looks like CWilliams has gotten bigger too already. We already know of the weight gain with Dom and Jarrod. I think this team could be pretty physical this year and much, much more athletic. Really excited about this too.

I was pretty impressed by Hutton and Wagner in their interview video's that Tom posted. Obviously you can throw Fleming in that mix as well as guys that seem to have their heads in the right place. That usually goes a long way in sports and wouldn't be surprised if these are the first 3 in consideration for playing time.

Wagner reminds me a bit of Jarryd Cole; nothing wrong with that.

The kids seem very well spoken, too. I've seen interviews with players from other schools and it's almost as if you need closed captioning to figure out what they're saying.

I think Woody may not be as aggresive on D now that he knows there is no Gabe behind him. How the fouls play out is anyone's guess as we know teams will be going at him to get him in trouble.

I do predict when he's out we look to run the opposition post into the ground.

It sure appears to me that Fran isn't in any hurry to put his chess pieces on the board. Especially the new ones.

I would think he really doesn't know at this point ...

what he does know is : Gesell, Clemmons, Jok, Uthoff, Woodbury & Uhl ...it wouldn't surprise me he starts Clemmons early on...just like last year...until things wash out in the early preseason games.. And Uhl backs up... Uthoff & Woody.

what he doesn't know is who are the next group after the first 6 & how many. It will be interesting to see who they are once the non-conference starts. It is fun to speculate...this is where we need a little mouse in practice.?...I do believe he is in a good coaching position as the new guys + Ellingson/Baer know who the first 6 are. I don't think Fran has to worry about hustle & attitude...its a matter of who catches on with the offense & defense the quickest...who knows ..it may not necessarily be the best shooter or the most athletic..

looking at the 4&5 first...most of the minutes are shared by JU,Woody&Uhl...so I'm going guess the depth guy is Ahmad Wagner...mainly because he gives me the impression of being able to defend...with his quickness & strength. I don't think Dale Jones was brought in to sit on the bench..because he can shoot from outside & is capable of rebounding (per Fran)...he certainly can play a stretch 4...but Fran has mentioned the need to improve his defending...this might be a game to game deal...do we need Wagner's defense or Jones offense? Jones could even slip down to 3 at times.

the so called 3...Brandon Hutton is a defender (with better than expected offense)...Isaiah Moss seems to have better reported offensive skills... this again could be a game to game case..do we need Hutton's shut down defense or Moss scoring skills..

the 2..when Sapp moves to point... Andrew Fleming & Brady Ellingson are in a dog fight...I said watching Fleming in PTL (and not seeing Moss)... Fleming has that "just gets it" to his game...and as with Jones slipping down to 3...Moss can slip down to 2... *** went golfing yesterday with someone who has been a long time Iowa supporter *** his comment was don't be surprised you see Moss & Fleming playing some point.....when Gesell & Clemmons are out...at least in those blow out games.

the 1 ... Christian Williams to me is the most likely redshirt .. and Fran has said that a redshirt for someone is very possible this year.

if anyone of the newcomers struggle with the offense & defense ... Nicholas Baer will be there to pickup the playing time ... especially at the 3.

so I'll guess this:
(1) Gesell (Sapp)
(2) Clemmons (Fleming/Ellingson) + Moss
(3) Jok (Hutton/Moss) + Jones + Baer
(4) Uthoff (Uhl) + Jones
(5) Woodbury (Uhl) + Wagner

Fleming, Ellingson, Moss, Hutton, Jones, Wagner battle it out for PT after the first 6.

so in other words...I don't have a clue...

Concerning the frontcourt, all the newbies have to contend with Woody, JU, and Uhl for minutes, so there aren't many to be had there for new players. All of the newbies have to work on defense, Hutton included by his own admission. Jones has the most to offer offensively there and is reportedly a good rebounder and comes in with the most experience of the newbies. If he can rebound and shoot well in games, then I think he has the best shot at 4-5 frontcourt minutes with Woody, JU, and Uhl.

The Press Citizen has an article with some pics from media day. Consider me impressed with the teams dedication to the weight room. Players like Woody, Uhl, and Uthoff who really needed to focus on strength got into the weight room this off-season. That, and we have some physically mature freshmen coming onto the team. That's great. They'll be able to work on their skills much more than bulking up.
