Young Frankenstein and blazing saddles where both released in 1974... Shows the absolute creative genius of Mel Brooks and hilarity of gene wilder. Those are both in my upper echelon of comedies
The campfire scene of Blazing Saddles gets me every time. Too bad we’ll never see another movie like it, the PC crowd wouldn’t allow it.
As far as other comedies go, Airplane has to be in the conversation. Plenty of quality comedy films in the mid 70s thru the early 80s - Animal House, Stripes, Kentucky Fried Movie - just to name a few. Comedies in the 90s were good for some cheap laughs but generally speaking, just didn’t have the same touch of comedic genius that the previous generation had.

A bit too campy to hold up after all these years. The "racist" humor wouldn't fly these days, even though it is all in jest. Pretty damn funny in 1974.
CSB: My grandmother took me to see it at a discount theatre a few years later. I was 11 or 12. I guess she figured I was mature enough, and she knew my dad swore like a sailor in front of me all the time. She was in her mid-70s at the time, and she was howling with laughter!

Porky's is right up there at the top. This scene is one of the funniest of all time and one take.
Young Frankenstein for me.
Have to consider Annie Hall, Tootsie, La La Land and Being John Malkovich.

La La Land? What part of that movie was even remotely funny? Okay, I get Being John Malkovich has its dark humor moments, but La La Land?
It took until the #24 post to mention Porky’s, how could we forget that movie, although lot of people would like to forget the whole series.

Trains, planes and automobiles. I love comedies and have watched them since the early 60’s. I laughed so hard that I went back to the theater and paid to watch it again. John Candy was a fantastic comedian, we lost him way too early.

For me the answer is always This Is Spinal Tap. The extras on the DVD are another hour and a half of pure genius as well.
