Gabe Wiznitzer

Clearly that is bunk. He's still a better coach than Fran, and that's no offense to Fran.
Would you say that he has consistently recruited better players? That would skew things in his favor just a bit, don't you suppose? And since we know he has cheated, I believe that he had an unfair advantage. Without that, he's not such a good coach...

Isnt recruiting a part of how you judge how good a college coach someone is?

He's a better coach than Fran.

He has had more success. Whether that was due to cheating is to be determined. He was 192 - 220 as a pro where he couldn't cheat in recruiting. Similar to Cal, when the tables are leveled he seems to become mediocre.
I don't give a F how he did in the league.

He's a better coach than Fran.

Nothing against Fran. I like him and think he is a good coach.

I think Pitino is a sleezball. But this argument is ridiculous. Put recruiting aside. Put the NBA aside because it's a completely different game and success is largely based on talent. As a college coach, when it comes to preparation and in-game coaching Pitino is elite. This has been well established and widely recognized for a long time now. Again, there really is no argument.

That said, Go Hawks, and I hope Pitino fall flat on his ass

College isn’t largely based on talent? Definitely not as much as the NBA I get, but it still is.

lol

This is the only place on earth that such an argument (Fran just as good as Pitino) would even occur to people.

Our fans don’t believe in objective measures when it comes to basketball coaching. Our guy is as good as any coach in the biz because....,well.... because he’s our guy. And if you don’t agree, you’re not a real fan and should go root for another team. Lol. The worst kind of effeminate tribalism — pure emotion, zero reason.

That's interesting. And it answers my question about whether he is still interested in coming this year. He would be smart to wait since 2020 fall/winter sports are still up in the air...

All in what the kid is interested in. Iowa would be a good spot to either redshirt or play limited minutes for a year behind Garza and then be in line for a lot of PT the following year.

I thought Fran said we were full for 2020. My guess is we might try and make room, but Fran likely said 2021 would be our preference.

Or maybe we got a silent commitment. LOL

Situations change. If in this instance the kid wanted to re-classify into 2020 and he wanted to come to Iowa, Fran would be silly to not take him. That is different than Fran actively seeking out 2020 players.

Some excerpts:

Why Iowa: “They are really high on my list because I like how they emphasize using their bigs and Coach (Fran) McCaffery has had a lot of success with big men with my skills like Luka Garza.”

RIVALS' REACTION:

Wiznitzer’s decision to stick with the 2021 class is an important one and gives him more time to develop and be college ready as a freshman in November 2021. It also gives him more time to evaluate all the schools and make a more educated decision after on-campus visits as opposed virtual visits via Zoom.

Providence made a ton of progress with him early and had a visit scheduled, which could have been enough to seal the deal for him as a 2020 commitment. Ed Cooley has made a big impression. Iowa is another one to watch with the way they have produced talented post players.

He does seem like a perfect fit to replace Luka. He looks very similar coming out of HS. Only time will tell whether he becomes nearly as good.
