Gilman back to PSU?

When I attended Penn State back in the 80s, every one of those 10% worked in the physics dept as a teaching assistant. People ask how Ono can get into PSU without having a full grasp of english, but 40 years ago you could teach physics without speaking any english.
I have no problem with him being international, it's not speaking English. You can get all the required coursework completed by Japanese speaking professors? The coaches were holding up signs when he wrestled Lee just to communicate. I understand teaching assistants speaking Japanese in a specific department dominated by one ethnicity but how do you accomplish the mandatory undergraduate coursework required for graduation. I understand a translator in sports, ala Ohtani, or teaching assistants in graduate programs, but as an undergraduate. I sat with a few Japanese wrestlers at the Big 10s, world champs nonetheless, and we communicated through Google translator. Can't imagine Ono's English is much better, or there wouldn't have been signs in the coaching corner

I heard Ono trying to speak english recently. As you might expect, his english is very sketchy. I understand he has a couple tutors, and is four months from the start of school. I minored in Japanese back in college, so I bet the bilingual faculty in the Japanese language dept has his tutoring going in reverse well in hand.

I also find it kind of weird that Cael would want him back after he jumped ship and showed his preference. Unless he finds it attractive for Ono, the new unofficial coach at PSU. I'm sure they all will learn as much from him as he will from them, if they have a good translator. It still baffles me that a kid with very very limited English can enroll in a school like PSU when kids with 30-32 ACT scores get denied routinely
international students are a huge component of funding universities. big time tuition dollars, especially for graduate programs.

Most universities have extensive language programs to get international students up to speed. He won’t be taking organic chemistry next year.

Think of it like an extended study abroad for an American student. They attend a university that teaches in their second language. By the end of the semester, their language skills are significantly better. One of the most appealing aspects for international students coming here is improving their English skills.

Are you suggestion Ono is paying to go to PSU? 😂😂😂😂
I’m pretty sure he’s saying Ono won’t be the first person going to PSU who doesn’t speak English well.

Iowa also has a program for international students to learn English first before taking regular classes. There was a large recruiting push a while back to bring in more international students to universities because they are paying full freight out of state tuition and many choose to live on campus for their entire stay as well. These students brought in significantly more revenue per year than another in state student.

Sure but college curriculums don't use basic vocabulary, they use complicated "subject terms" For example, psychology - "psychoanalysis" or political science - "filibuster" or engineering - "tangents or acid based reactions"....

We are not talking 6th grade English vocabulary like "I want to go to the mall with Johnny"

10% of Penn State students are International. For comparison, Iowa is at 6%, and Iowa State is at 9.5%.
Being international is different than not speaking English. Much of the world speaks fluent English, One does not!

So PSU has a curriculum for the 500 languages in the world....and those professors are all subject matter experts to teach the diverse, mandatory classes, not electives?

I guess we should just wait and see what he declares as his major.

And don't get me wrong, I asked the same questions of Echemendia and Batista when I heard their English. At least they have each other on the team.

It'll be lonely when nobody on the team can converse with you. Maybe it'll be FUN if the whole team learns sign language this summer.

In law school there were plenty of international students around but they all spoke English. Only one professor spoke Japanese and he taught Constitutional Law. He's not an expert where he can also teach Torts, Criminal Law, etc. That's what I am getting at.

Penn State has an intensive English program for international students.

Iowa has a very similar program which all students on an F1 visa must complete or test out of.

These ESL courses are specifically designed to teach English so the student is able to handle the academic courses taught exclusively in English.
