Good wrestlers want to train with other good wrestlers. Those whose goal is to get on the mat this year have the freedom to portal out. No one is being held hostage. Maybe they all just really want to be in that room.
This.

No one is holding a gun to a kid's head to make them stay. If they no longer want to be a part of the program, they are free to go.

There was a PSU QB years ago who was told he'd never see the field at PSU but he elected to stay. I don't know why, but he did. Guess he was comfortable holding a clipboard and just being part of the program.

This thread is all over the place and many in it are complete hypocrites. You can't bash PSU at every turn and then, when your program does something similar, justify it.

Remind me never to post quoting Randy Newman lyrics ever again.
Didn't realize it was a Randy Newman song, my bad.

FYI - I worked with his niece a handful years ago. She was the office coordinator on a small movie I did in Iowa. Had the biggest crush on her.

Sorry, I legit don't have any pics. I sure as hell wish I did.

Damnit, now I'm a hypocrite and breaking the rules!

Hypocrisy is one of the most common but lamest accusations . People will always explain away a self serving situation but hold the other guy to a higher standard .

4. "Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules." This is number 4 of Saul Alinsky’s rules of radicals. It’s politics but it works well with any conflict between two parties.

Accept the situation, do what it takes to win within certain “rules”. Obviously there’s always a question of the rules. If more people looked at these situations through a different filter they might understand it better . But it’s hard with fandom.

One thing is for certain, you are one weird dude.

“Great Nations of Europe” is the name of the song. Great tune. I was thinking about doing a parity of it with the various wrestling programs substituted for the explorers named but haven’t had the time to figure it all out.

how many years in a row have people been doing the "recruits are going to start realizing cael doesn't care about them" thing? 5? 10?

and still, cael rakes in guys that he seemingly doesn't even need

it's pretty clear those recruits aren't bothered by it nearly as much as we are
And they are now really just starting to leave like Barraclough, Facundo, Steen. And, the portal is open for 2 more weeks and maybe we will see Davis and Ryder, maybe not. But, Facundo, Davis and Facundo are tier 1 recruits and it will certainly send a message if they leave.

Recruiting over the top of others is the right answer in all situations.

Pennsylvania taxpayers will not be satisfied until the majority of PSU students are citizens of China (They are better at math - right?) and the wrestling team includes multiple members of the Japanese National team.

What kind of message would that be?

Good, bad, or otherwise for the sport, a head coach is responsible for putting his best possible team on the mat. If you have a chance to upgrade, you do it most of the time.

If the shoe were on the other foot Iowa fans would love it and PSU fans would be complaining.
Maybe Hawks can improve by making a play for Byrd and Messenbrink. Hawk fans would love it. And if we can find a way to bring Kem back on staff, McEnelly can come with him to compete with Angelo. Love it.

Complaining about over-recruiting is so lame. It wasn’t wrong when Iowa ditched Glazier for Buchanan and it’s not wrong for PSU now.

The coach’s job is to make the team better. If a former finalist wants to come aboard, you would be stupid to say no. Worst case, he doesn’t make the lineup over Ryder AND you’ve kept him out of the lineup of a major rival for at least a year. Win-Win.

Barraclough left after his senior year. He stayed a full year AFTER losing 157 to Levi. I spoke with him at length at Olympic Trials. He had nothing but great things to say about his time in the Penn State room. I don’t think Davis and Ryder are going anywhere at this time. Davis still has a RS which he could use. Ryder isn’t backing down to anyone. He’ll fight for a spot in the starting line-up as will Welsh. Both are competitors. Both think they can win the spot. We’ll see. Competition is good. If you’re a wrestler looking for a guaranteed spot on the mat the Penn State room is not the room for you. If you’re a wrestler want to develop your skills by rolling on a daily basis with the best of the best, the Penn State room is clearly the room of choice.

Imagine, you're Davis and you now have a world champion in the room to practice with every day. Assuming Davis can't beat Ono, should he take a redshirt and work to get better?
Go take a nap already

I agree with this and I think and hope Ryder wins the spot. What I said is that the doors are starting to open and it wasn’t meant as a bad thing. PSU knows this and the starters will stay and others will start to leave. The simple point is PSU doesn’t need the portal or care if guys leave nor should they.

Sorry but Glazier and Buchanan is not the same as Ryder and Welsh or Davis and Ono. Not even close.

I don't think it will send the message you're hoping for.

No idea why you would mention Steen. Probably a great kid, but c'mon.

I am complementing PSU on progress towards their international recruiting goals. Over 5% of the student body is Chinese and growing. Landing what some call the best pfp freestyle wrestler in the world is a great start towards recruiting additional world medalists.

I hope the University of Iowa does not follow suit, but you do you. No need for hoards of PSU fans to visit an Iowa board and defend every action of the PSU wrestling program. I wish PSU fans comfort, remaining on a PSU board, and discussing their success.

Not really. Will just mean they weren't good enough to win starting spots. Next year is when the mass exodus of tier 1 guys will start.

Ono is a world champ (and also not even replacing Davis according to most projections). Davis is a mid-AA. Welsh is a returning finalist. Ryder is a 174 wrestling up who went to SV with Shane Cartagena-Walsh and AJ Heeg (sub .500) this year.

Sealey is the only guy I could see leaving this year. He probably has a pretty good idea where he stacks up against Kasak. Even so, I wouldn't be surprised if he gave it a shot for one year.

Ok cherry pick info to fit your narrative. Zach Ryder is a multi-time world team member and has some medals to go along with it.

Yep. And as important as having good training partners is, these elite level guys want to compete when it counts.

In age-level freestyle. I think he'll be great, but he's not a sure thing. His folkstyle results are what they are.

Plus, as I said, he's a 174. He's about the same size as Gabe Arnold. If he loses the spot to Welsh this year, he slides down to replace Haines next year and starts 3 years (he very well could have done that anyway!). Nothing about this move forecloses Davis or Ryder from being starters at PSU.

Sealey is an interesting one. Kid just loves PSU. He's not leaving this year. Is going to try and beat out Kasak/MM. Obviously that ain't happening - but I think he'll see the writing on the wall once Duke comes in.

If your goal is to be a national champ, sacrificing a postseason or two to train in that middleweight room is not a bad idea. I don't think Terrell Barraclough is an AA if he goes to Utah Valley out of high school.

I guess so. But i also think Sealey is a 165. And I don't see him beating out Duke. Kasak has 2 more years, and that cut to 157 ain't gonna get easier.

I'm waiting for Penn State to start tapping the Mongolian wrestling well. They could help up the Nitts post match dance game.

Yeah, I'm saying waiting to transfer a year or two is not a bad idea. Best case, you win the spot. Worst, you get to train in the best room in the country for 1-2 extra years and get paid to start elsewhere.

Worse, you lose a couple years of your wrestling career by benchsitting.
