Gilman

Drawing Uguev 1st round probably makes his draw harder than he has had so far, but it also gave him his best chance to still medal after losing prior to the finals. Still, I would say he looked like very much the same wrestler to me. Dogged determination for the entire 6 minutes, great positioning, heavy on the head with specific low level attacks. When he avoids a big mistake he can beat anyone at the weight. However, his style lends to close matches against the better competition and it means he could lose to the top 6-8 guys as well.
You did watch his Olympic matches, right? He lost the heart breaker against Uguev, and then dominated his others. There was no doubt about those other matches from the outset. He outscored his opponents 24-7 and 5 of those points were against the multi-time World and Olympic champ.

Yes, I sure did. What exactly did you just post that specifies 1 clear technique or skill improvement? The Gilman wrestling at Iowa would have decimated his last 2 opponents just as easily. They both looked like the mailed in their performances on the back side and wilted under the EXACT SAME constant pressure that Gilman has ALWAYS wrestled with.

The only thing I MAY concede is the fact Willie pointed out over on themat. Gilman's finishes may have been crisper, but he ONLY scored 1 takedown against Uguev. The fact that I still believe his 2 other opponents gave up gives me a VERY SMALL sample size to anoint PSU as some technique/skill gamechanger.

Also, let's not forget that he had some lukewarm results leading up to the Olympics losing to a guy that Suriano SMOKED and getting pinned by Sanders. To me, I basically saw the same Gilman I was used to, but I will give PSU credit that it seemed like Gilman was fully "ON" mentally and he didn't show even the slightest sign of a let down after losing a heartbreaker to Uguev.

There was a quote in the broadcast about him not having a mindset of feeling like he was the best in the world the last few years. And that he had a mental shift after the move. It is probably a mind f to realistically not be the best guy in your room let alone world. Not really a knock on him at all. It would be hard staring at your biggest threat on a daily basis.

It was said by a Penn State fan to downplay Gilmans past world Silver. Gilman had a great draw to get to the bronze match right off the bat at the Olympics. Not downplaying him at all, he wrestled well indeed and earned it. But he didn't all of a sudden get 10 times better once he moved East. He was already world class before he got there, just like you said.
Really, go read some predictions on this board about Gilman's chances. Hardly anyone on the board gave him a chance of medaling in the Olympics. A few predicted 5th.

When the fake bracket came out and had Uguev as Gilman’s draw, I mentioned on Twitter that “Gilman is the bad draw.” I wouldn’t want to see Gilman as my first match…especially if I had weight issues.

Also, the worlds is typically tougher to win than the Olympics. A champ only has to wrestle two morning matches, an evening semi and an evening final the next day. Gilman had to wrestle three matches over two days: once in the morning, once in the evening and another the following evening to win bronze. About the only difficulty is too much time to think in between matches. At worlds in 2017, he wrestled five matches in one day (4-1). I believe they changed it the following year to have repechage/medal matches the following day. The brackets are still double the size of the Olympic brackets because you don't have to qualify the weight. Throw a Yianni or a J.O. into the Olympic 65kg and they could maybe bust that bracket up a bit.

Also, he did this at world trials in 2017 in one day beating Cruz (9-0), Graff (1-1), Nico (11-0), Nato (6-2) and Ramos (2X). He didn't lose a match from NCAA semis until World finals:

This is inherently false. Yes, some people probably posted that but many us said that he has a great medal shot with Uguev first round, win or lose. Repechage is not that complicated dog.

Gilman should not have lost that match. For one, he got hit with the passivity -1 point first, when I thought he was more aggressive than ROC guy. Ref seemed to being chiding Gilman for no reason for things....so He's leading into the final moments of the match...and probably should have just kept a distance used hands until clock ticked off...but he stayed aggressive and then the ROC guy got his leg and had got leverage against the knee... twisting on his knee (dangerous and could have been stopped by ref)....Gilman had to give it up to avoid his knee being popped.

Most amazing final second win was Gable Stevenson's.

Like many have said, they a lot of times put the aggressor on the clock first. Just is weird.

Really? That’s your story? He lost due to fear of injury?

I imagine it’s not good for your mentality when you’re trying to be the best in the world and then see Spencer Lee in the same room.
Lol Are you saying it’s hard to be the toughest guy in the world when there is a better guy in your room?

(I don’t usually know the answers to questions I ask, but this is an exception.)

The biggest change in Gilman since leaving, his mental game is better and this is a big deal.

I agree. Though I'd like to know what part of his mental game changed. Was it a feeling of being in Spencer's shadow, or was being the bad guy getting to him? I kinda wonder if #2 has more to do with it then people here want to admit. Gilman thrived as the bad guy leader that he seemed to inherit from Ramos. Maybe he wanted to change his image, but for some reason didn't think he could while still at iowa.

Did anyone see him answer a question about his injury? He said he saw two or three specialists that of course said he needs surgery and not to wrestle. He did have a good kind and said “ they’re surgeons, of course they’re going to tell you to have surgery” lol. Then he said one day Cael told him to go see “his guy”, a guru, in California. Not a doctor or anything like that. Gilman wouldn’t really say anything for certain of what the guy did and he wouldn’t say his name. He just mentioned some blocked energy channels lol. Honestly the first thing hearing his story, then hearing Dake say he wasn’t aloud to bring “the stuff he needed” made me think of something possibly not so above board with usa wrestling and possibly wada lol. Just the pessimist coming out of me. Love how they did tho. Wish both could of won gold.

A couple of things here…I like seeing Gilman like this. I don’t care if it took him moving across enemy lines to do so, he just seems content. Good for him. I suspect it has more to do with his wife/baby coupled with an Olympic medal than anything else but however anybody wants to spell it out, he seems like he’s figured some stuff out in this world. He even almost gave credit to brands and Gable haha. He will be easier to root for now even though I won’t forget the snide remarks made toward Spencer and Iowa. I’ll root for him against anybody not in an Iowa singlet.

He knows deep down he can’t beat Spencer. Soon enough can’t come fast enough!!!

Gilman announced he will be attending Worlds this year so no 57 at WTT.

Are they not doing 57 trials or it’s just the winner doesn’t get the spot? Seems dumb to not do it to determine a backup in case of injury. Imagine Gilman’s foot injury becomes severely worse a month from now. I would think USA wrestling would want someone else to fill in.

I imagine it would be Vito.

who’d a thought Gilman would end up recruiting for Penn State wrestling
He’s definitely got a lot going on in that head of his....He took that interview a lot of different directions
I’m gonna get kind of philosophical and say he makes me question how “fandom” affects my opinion of someone....maybe I should reevaluate that
ahhhh probably not gonna happen.... Go Hawks! and USA!

Where did Dake say this?

Gilman takes a lot of shots at Iowa being old fashioned in the last interview. About being over trained... not managing weight cutting well, burning him out etc. He was mistreated and poorly coached right to a world silver medal. HIs best finish yet internationally. Ha. Of course he's shown progress since 2017. He's been training for the past four years. It's not rocket science. It's the exact narrative that Cael uses against Iowa and now they have a paid mouth piece echoing this sentiment. I used to be a fan of Gilman now I am not. He's gone too far. He doesn't care about my opinion, but he's lost me as a fan--forever. Gilman and his new coaches did the right thing taking the World Team spot. My prediction is it will be his last. The young guys are coming and he won't weather the storm despite whatever voodoo magic he couldn't explain that wholistically healed his foot. Three doctors recommended surgery and then he met with someone that helped him release his inner energy--"I can't explain it." He had better win it all this year, because it's his last major team in my opinion. I can't wait to watch his mouth get shut. He will go down and he will go down hard and he will not be our representative in 2024, but as a former Hawk, I offer him the following: Congratulations for the bronze, that's a great accomplishment. Well done. Now grow up and realize that you don't have to burn bridges to help one program grow by stepping on the throat of another that invested time and resources into your journey. You can honor the past and grow a future at the same time.

Here is the thing with those remarks, he will have to face Spencer sooner or later. You know it pisses Spencer off, but he has stayed above reproach on it all. Thomas will have to put up when they meet or he will be eating a lot of crow. Could have all the makings for a meltdown for Thomas.

Lee is awesome, but I wouldn’t bet
against Gilman if they were to wrestle now. He looked great. Wouldn’t bet against Lee either. Not sure about Fix. All those old matches, Fix seemed to come back against Lee. Lee is deceptively strong, but those guys seem to have bought some muscle mass. Hopefully we can see all those matches next summer. Here is to a healthy, motivated Spencer Lee!
