Got a job!

I was able to find a job doing a similar thing to what I was doing before with maybe a few added responsibilities.

Good news is I will be making 25% more than I was. And I won't have to worry about certain annoying tasks that I was at my previous job.

Bad news is I have to drive an hour each way to get to work and back.

Plus I get a cool sounding title. "Project manager" Previous company was smaller and we didn't really have titles.

I start Tuesday. He wanted Monday to I guess move some stuff and clear out an office for me.
What direction are you heading? If I recall I’m about an hour west of you. As someone who spent years driving an hour each way, it solely depends on how traffic is on how that hour is. I used to drive into Chicago and in traffic the hour was terrible when your barely moving. Then I changed jobs and went an hour away from the city and drove backroads and that hour flew by every day. But there’s something about being close to home and gaining 2 hours of your life back that is also worth quite a bit of money.

Wow this other company is blitzing me. Telling me they might be able to come up with a better offer next week.

I think the number would have to be significantly higher. Not just a little bit. I would feel terrible calling the company I was going to start with in a few days that I was changing my mind.
I'm not suggesting this but think about calling the company that you accepted the job and tell them you have another company that have offered you more if they do)

I will probably be in your area then, the new job is on Merrillville, IN.

Oh and just wanted to thank everyone except @NoWokeBloke for their words of encouragement when I got laid off last week. You all believed in me more than I did myself.

@NoWokeBloke however found it all funny when I got laid off but he I am sure will find it less amusing that I basically got a 2 week paid vacation, a promotion and a 25% raise with better benefits.

So yeah that dude can kiss my ass.

I don't believe you.

Who?

Congrats man! I'll add that if the other job does end up meeting your salary requirements, don't feel too bad about bailing on the one you initially accepted. You determined your market value was higher and that's that. If they feel so inclined they may even try counter the other offer. You'll feel guilty because you are a good person but you have to do what's best for you and your family - which is not only $ but proximity and whatever other factors you find important.

It is honestly the weirdest feeling having a company talk about breaking their usual pay structure to get me on board. Granted I was fresh out of college but the last time I was looking for a job I felt like I was begging someone to please hire me.

Drive would be the only good thing about this company. The work seems less interesting, I dislike their PTO time, it is an hourly instead of salary position, as vain as it sounds the title is less impressive. Plus with this other company he was open to remote work when I am sick or snowed in so I wouldn't even need to use PTO then.

Congrats.

Did the hour each way commute for 17 years. It does get old.

Congrats.

It’s very possible that services for your kids get harder to find. If they’ll be better served in Merrillville then maybe consider shortening that commute.

Fun fact: when I lived in Chicago I drove to Merrillville to buy a car. We wanted something specific and they had a very good deal listed on their website. I show up and ask about the X car at Y price and he laughs like I’m making it up to screw him. He says he’ll go check. So I walk the lot and I find it by matching the VIN. He comes out and admits defeat. The sticker price was $3k more than the online price. I’m 98% sure somebody fat-fingered the numeric keyboard and hit the key below. Anyway… they honored the listed price.

A relocation to Merriville may be something to consider in the years ahead. It's certainly not right away.

My dad helped us get our current house in 2010 when property prices were uber cheap so we basically own our admittedly small house outright without a mortage. On top of that my parents are very close by to help us with kids when necessary as well as issues with car/home since my dad is kind of a super handyman. Just this week he helped me fix both my car and my furnace.

Picking up and moving an hour away from parents and getting a mortgage is a lot of negatives. The getting the mortgage is less of an issue because we wouldn't mind getting a bigger house. Moving away from parents would make a lot of things tougher because we would have no nearby help with kids.

Congrats.

I’d see how the jobs goes before making any moves. It might not be the right fit so I’d see how it goes before doing anything major.

Regarding the other job, tell them thanks for the increased offer but you committed to the other job so you are going to honor your word. That should tell them you are a stand up guy but also tell them if it’s not the right fit and doesn’t work out, you will let them know. Keep all options open as you never know what can and will happen.

Good luck with your new job(s)!

Another angle to take is to tell the initial company that you have an offer from another company in your home town and ask for transportation assistance - vehicle or gas money.

I basically told them that the job I accepted is a salaried position with better PTO/Vacation time and I would need a higher offer to be significant for me to consider it.

I do have a number in mind of sort of an "offer I can't refuse" but it would be over 50% higher than the highest range that we discussed in the interview. I just can't see them coming across with a number that big.

The one thing that does give me pause is this other job would teach me some skills that have a more wide range outside of that job. With the job I'm taking I feel like I'm pretty much committed to the aluminum glass and glazing industry, which is problematic because after my old job closes down completely there will only be 2 suppliers within driving range of my house, one that already turned me down and the one I just took a job from.

Got the verbal yesterday. Official offer from H.R. coming Tuesday. Small company and they don’t move that quickly, I’m finding out. I’ll celebrate once I have signed.

Is it a contract job?

Every job I have ever had they just said here is what I will pay you, come in Tuesday.

Congrats either way.

Of i recall from your posts, you are in the New Carlisle area. If the Merrillville job sticks, I'd seriously consider Valpo/Chesterton to move. That's a very nice area.

I went to college at Valpo so I am somewhat familiar with the area albeit 20 years ago.
My Son and D-I-L are PNC grads and lived in Valpo, now Kouts. I love Valpo, Awesome community center farmers market that doubles as an ice skating rink in the winter. The small town feel but it has enough population to support the downtown shops. Good food places.
