Gov. Kristi Noem of South Dakota

Welfare queen

In her speeches attacking government overreach, Noem leaves out another important fact. Between 1995 and 2016, her family-owned Racota Valley Ranch in Hazel, S.D. cashed $3,704,415 million in government farm subsidies. In 2012 alone, they accepted $232,707 in subsidies.

That's different. And, you know, $3.7 million over 20 years really isn't that much money...

She isn't denying the substance of the passage in the book, just for the folks who wanted to wait to see if this story was accurate. She's now countering with the argument that she's being targeted and she's fighting for you. And, the Doobis and multi-handle loyalists are rallying around her banner. The smart Republicans are heading for the hills in this thread.

IIRC her family received about $100k in Covid relief funds also.

edit: I beg your pardon, Noem family took in approximately $600,000 in Covid funds - $500k for the Noem family ranch and another $100k for her brothers.

She shit the bed putting that out there. This country loves dogs. No VP for her, especially the way she describes it in the book.
Read the passage. Yeah that isn’t particularly flattering. Sounds as if she’s a crappy trainer. Should have kept the dog in kennel.

Guardian.
“I hated that dog,” Noem wrote, adding that the 14-month-old wirehair pointer was “dangerous to anyone she came in contact with” and “less than worthless … as a hunting dog”.
The governor said she included the story in her political memoir to demonstrate her willingness to take on “difficult, messy and ugly” tasks, and she described an attempt to teach Cricket to hunt with other dogs, but instead the pup ruined the trip by going “out of her mind with excitement, chasing all those birds and having the time of her life."

Noem unsuccessfully attempted to bring Cricket under control using an electronic collar, but she said the dog escaped her truck as she stopped to talk to a local family on the way home and attacked that family's chickens.

"[Cricket] grabbed one chicken at a time, crunching it to death with one bite, then dropping it to attack another," she wrote, comparing the dog to “a trained assassin."

“[She] whipped around to bite me," Noem wrote, adding that Cricket was "the picture of pure joy" throughout the incident.

“At that moment,” Noem wrote, “I realized I had to put her down.”

Noem said she retrieved her gun and led Cricket to a gravel pit.

“It was not a pleasant job,” she writes, “but it had to be done. And after it was over, I realized another unpleasant job needed to be done.”

She then recounts how she killed one of her family's goats, a “nasty and mean" male that had not been castrated, by dragging him to the gravel pit, and afterward she realized a nearby construction crew had watched her slaughter both animals before her children were dropped off by a school bus.

“Kennedy looked around confused,” Noem wrote, describing her daughter's reaction. “'Hey, where’s Cricket?'”

I 100% agree. She is a politician. Don’t start telling folks you shoot dogs when you want to get votes. It would be like telling people you like to Jerk off to midget porn
You say that like it's a bad thing?

If she did it to sound tough to the Orange Turd, as has been speculated, she is North Dakota dumb.

He'll have is giggle and it's just another Orange Turd day.

I'm not a republican and I have no problem defending her -- or at least giving a big "meh" -- on her putting down a disobedient livestock killing dog.

Trying to win on something like this is stupid politics by the dems.

People are seriously freaking out about that passage regarding the dog? Completely out of touch.

She killed the dog. Then she thought it was a good time to kill the goat as well. Instead of perhaps calming down a bit. She was really pissed off rightfully so btw. Probably should have taken a snickers break first.
The passage read as her being more pissed off about the hunting trip being ruined than the neighbors chickens. Perhaps she should have kept the hunting dogs in kennels like most responsible hunters do. For safety of the animal transport or for safety of other animals.

What she did is completely normal behavior by people on farms everywhere. You lead a sheltered life. Millions of rural people are going "so what."
I’ve defended rural people early in the thread. Only after reading the passage did I take exception with her behavior. Rural people don’t go around bragging about putting down animals such as dogs . Because they have common sense enough to understand it’s frowned upon.

Where did you get bragging from this?

She published in a book. Framed it as this is proof of how she can handle the tough decisions.
Her experience in putting down bad hunting dogs and mean goats is something to chalk on the resume. Kinda appears to be bragging to me. Others may hold a different opinion though.
Right. Appealing to her conservative -- largely rural -- voter base. Duh? Do you really think she didn't know that a lot of the left would be aghast? (or feigning dismay/outrage for political gain? ) Of course she knew that. She obviously didn't give a shit about them. Generally that's how things work politically nowdays. Haters gon hate, focus on your base.

The left is trying to capitalize on this. They'll run stories without full context to foment as much outrage as they can get. The NBC article I saw earlier didn't contain this context.

Of course conservative media is going to take all that and flip back against the left. (out of touch, misleading headlines, etc)

This has a good chance to turn into a not example of how the left is out of touch with rural America. (on the conservative media side of things)

Who do you think will win? Will the left be able to generate enough outrage to be effective in diminishing her popularity amongst likely supporters? Will the conservative media win on its capitalizing upon the left-is-out-of-touch angle?

I don't think it hurts her because most people don't give a shit about the oppositions bitching at this point. Look at Trump.

I’m not buying she wrote that to impress Trump. Not everything is about him, unless you’re Trump.

you are inventing hypotheticals to support your opinion. You should switch handles before doing that.

I think you’re wrong. Grew up on a farm most of my childhood.. This is something you rarely discuss. Especially in vivid detail. If Trump were to pick her as VP it will stick and become an issue. Hence why I think this costs her the spot. The swing voters that he’ll try to appeal to will have another thing to be turned off by. Stupid stuff sticks. Trump doesn’t need more of what she appeals to. He already has rural voters locked up.

Here's the thing w/guys like you. Anyone, and I mean anyone who tells this story the way she did deserves to catch shit, Republican or Democrat. You're just pissed off that it's a Republican so you feel the need to defend her for some reason. Unless you're a psychopath like her.
And now I just read THIS to myself in a Lawrence O’Donnell ‘I am outraged and trying to hold back tears’ voice and now I’m starting to feel bad.

Jk. I’m not pissed off about anything. I’m not voting for anyone this year except our incumbent sheriff (I) and our incumbent state rep (R). The latter because I got to know her during covid and she was level headed about the whole fiasco.

If I lived in SD maybe it would bother me. But probably not. Politicians are scumbags. Get off your high horse.
