First, congratulations on making the Rose Bowl Game! It is an awesome experience.

I am a longtime VIP season ticket holder for UCLA, which plays at the Rose Bowl. Several years ago, I started a web page with my tips for fans visiting the Rose Bowl. I update it every year and it now includes information about parking, prices, tips to getting a cheap rental car in Los Angeles, understanding the ticket information, things to do, seating locations, best sections to watch the game and actual images of real tickets (mine). It will come in handy for anyone who may be attending the game. HERE IS THE LINK.

Second is my shameless disclaimer: I don’t make any money on the site but I do use it to sell my own tickets to games I can’t attend. Sadly, my Bruins are not in it…again - so I do plug my own Rose Bowl Game tickets there.

If you are coming to the game and you have any questions about the Rose Bowl or where to stay or anything else related, post them in this thread and I’ll try to help.

Good luck!

This is actually pretty solid information, especially about seating and views from those seats. It's not a great stadium for watching a game...it's too far from the damn field...and the corners and endzones are terrible seats...sorry, but they are.

Thank you for this! Very informative. I'm going with a college buddy of mine who lives in Corona. Luckily he had all kinds of tailgating gear. We plan on tailgating ourselves at the Brookside Golf Course. What time would you suggest we get there in order to claim a spot?

i applaud the marketing idea. we keep asking questions, and your post keeps moving to the top. not kidding, its a great idea, and everyone wins.

that being said, long time listener, first time caller: would it be feasible to park at the stadium early and walk to the parade - probably just watch an hour of the parade then head back to parking lot to enjoy that scene?

If I watch the parade from the south side of Colorado Blvd will I have a hard time crossing the street and getting to the game?

Thanks for the info a lot of it is great! Those tickets look sweet and I'd buy them if I had the means to do so. I would most likely abuse the full bar and be thrown out in the first quarter anyways.

It is very easy. Buses will start running at 10:00 a.m. The parking rate there is a killer though - $40 this year. But the actual shuttle is free. If you can find cheaper parking, it makes a lot of sense.

I guess more of what I was asking was: Does the bus actually move. Posters on here have said that traffic is so backed up it just makes sense to walk. Its only a couple miles, but stuck in traffic for hour+ isn't fun (presuming you aren't supposed to drink on the bus)

Also, is there a line of 10,000 people waiting for shuttles?

TIA.

The walk is probably about a mile. But to your point, on big games, like the USC/UCLA game when there are 80,000 to 90,000 fans, I often will walk if the weather is good. The buses move well enough (they close many of the streets for bus/resident only traffic), but the bus line after the game is horrendous. Getting to the Rose Bowl before the game is not so bad since people are taking the buses over a three hour period. After the game, you have 20,000+ people all getting into the bus line at one time. I definitely think walking is a little faster. The game will probably be over around 5:00 p.m. so the walk will still be at safe time and there will be a lot of other people walking as well.

As for drinking, you should probably plan on doing that before the bus or entering the stadium. The Rose Bowl is mostly a dry stadium (except for my seating area...hint...hint ;)) and they check your bags when entering.

Shouldn't be a problem. They usually open all the streets up quickly after the parade so I don't think where you are watching the parade will have any affect on your getting to the game. Have a good time.

Great stuff. Thanks for putting so much time into that site. It's really valuable.

Can you tell me if it is reasonable to get an uber/can from LA to Pasadena around 7:00am to catch part of the parade (no need to be close or near the beginning, just want to be able to catch a glimpse and "experience it"), and still be able to get over to the stadium by around 10:30 or 11:00 to tailgate?

I'm already exhausted thinking about NYE in LA, and then early morning parade and tailgating before the main event. I want to do this without needing a week off afterwards if possible.

Thanks my friend. I am glad to help and hopefully it helps me too! You can definitely do this. The stadium parking lots open at 4:00 a.m. The parade starts at 8:00 a.m. and lasts for about two hours. The walk from the stadium to the closest part of the parade is probably about 1.5 miles. So if you start early there is plenty of time to do both, including watching the entire parade if you want. And you could actually take the free Parsons shuttle back to the stadium to save some energy for the game. Have a great time.

Well there is tailgating, and then there is tailgating. If you want to be where the action is in the main tailgating area next to the stadium (lots of people, lots of food and beer, often even the cheerleaders will show up, lots of music, lots of new friends, the full spread tailgate tents etc), you will need to arrive super early. The gates open at 4:00 a.m. and I guarantee you there will already be a big line waiting to get in. Takes some effort but for a big game like this it may be worth it for the once in a lifetime type experience.

Beyond that, the stadium uses the golf course for parking as you noted. Lot's of people do tailgate there and it is nice and pretty since it is all grass and big oak trees, but the only people are those walking from their cars to the stadium. So the experience is very different. I have done that and to be honest, find it a little boring. But if you are okay with that, then I would probably arrive by 9:00 a.m. for this game. There will be a lot of people and if the golf course fills up you can end up REALLY far away and on asphalt which you probably don't want for tailgating.

Yeah, agree. I have sat in almost every section, and this is one stadium where it really is worth spending the extra money and get seats with good viewing sight lines. If you can afford it, stay away from the endzones. Corners are not as bad but you will see more by watching the game on the giant video screen rather than on the field.

I don't see why you couldn't do that although I have found Uber to be hit or miss. The problem is if you can find an Uber driver who wants to go into Pasadena on New Years day. It is really crazy there. The parade ends around 10:00 a.m. so getting to the stadium by 11:00 or earlier is easy. You can walk (a little over a mile) or take the free shuttle. It will be a long day even if you just go to the game only. If I was trying to save some energy, I would get a hotel next to a metrolink station. Take the train to downtown Pasadena (drops you off next to the parade route). After the parade take the shuttle to the stadium and then reverse the procedure after the game. That will mean no traffic or hassles, and limit the amount of walking. Have a great time!

I was offered a Vip parking pass, where is the vip lot?

I don't think that's a bad price for those tickets. If I was going, I'd be very tempted to get them. Especially if I was already being forced into paying 500 plus for mediocre seats. That would be going in style and totally worth it, IMO.

Well, there are different lots so I might need more info to help you. For the UCLA games most of the VIP/Premium lots are H and M, very close next to the west side of the stadium. For this game, I suspect there are several VIP type parking areas since so many people will be willing to pay more. I would recommend you ask exactly which parking lot it is. Let me know and I'll give you my opinion.

Lot 5A

We have a house rented east of the Rose bowl a couple of miles by the roscoes, are we gonna be ok walking to and from the bar in old Pasadena each night

That is great info. Thanks for posting that and good luck with the sale of your tickets. Hope you keep the site up until game day as I will reference it often as we plan our trip.

Planning on taking Gold Line for the game...which is the best stop to get off and how long a walk to the stadium?

We got an AirBnB in South Pasadena for the night. The rest of the trip (4 nights) we're staying at Manhattan Beach. Our AirBnB host said he drives his guests to the parade as a bonus! Our reserved parade seats are on the northbound portion, at the beginning, so we have about a mile walk to the stadium. He said he'll pick us up after the game from the same spot.

The guy is a retired PE teacher and had 37 reviews, all of them saying how kind he is. He sounds legit. We're paying $75 for all that (lodging/transportation to and from the game). Seems like the way to go to me, provided it all goes according to plan.

From what I've read, Memorial Park Station is the best stop and then, according to Google Maps, it's about a 40-minute walk to/from the stadium. If the weather forecast is decent, I think that's what we'll do.

Here's a link to Google Maps directions.

@RoseBowlSeats, will that be a safe route to walk after the game?

That's a little farther than I thought it would be. Still I have no problem walking. Just hope my brother doesn't complain. It is better than fighting traffic, that's for sure!

Our plan is to park at the Sierra Madre Villa station (free). If full, there is a shopping mall nearby where we can park if need be.

Looking forward to @RoseBowlSeats' reply re: safety.

Okay. I know exactly where 5A is. It is just across the gully. I have attended some game day special group events there. I think that this is as I thought, an extension of the VIP section to accommodate all the people willing to pay more (it s farther than the VIP sections I get offered because of my seats so they may keep opening new VIP sections as demand increases).

It is pretty close if you are just walking straight from your car to the game and that is your only concern. However, if you are planning to attend the events area where all the booths, fans, and TV broadcasting are, then it is almost directly opposite on the other side of the stadium. I guess the question is what you plan on doing after you park and before you leave and what you hope to get out of upgraded parking.

If you want to tell me how much they want for the pass, I'll give you my opinion.

We also have parking at 5A. We're planning in arriving there about 9-9:30 and tailgating with friends in that lot. Anything hiccups to this plan?

(And greetings from Laguna Niguel.)
No hiccups at all. However, I would advise that whatever time you think is a good time to leave, make it an hour earlier. Seriously. Pasadena will be crazy because of both the parade and the game (there is actually a bunch of other things as well). A lot of streets will be closed, lots of detours, and maybe even some general chaos. This will probably even cause the freeways to backup. If you have plans for a specific time, you need to really pad the travel time to get there. Have a great time!

First of all, thanks for all the great info and those are awesome seats you have for sale. I really hope one of these Iowa fans take them off your hands.

My question is, if you arrive at 4 a.m. do they just assign the tailgate spot where they want to put you? Or do you get to pick where you want to park? If it is the latter, where would you suggest?

Well this is just my opinion - the area you describe is okay and both Lake and Colorado (the route you will walk) are busy streets, but Pasadena is a diverse town. There are ridiculously rich areas, and some very poor areas with serious crime. There is also a homeless problem. Old Town will be fine and safe till late at night. But I don't think there will be a lot of pedestrians at night on your walk back. I suspect you will be alone most of that walk after you get out of Old Town although it should be well lit for the most part. The daytime walk is safe and not a problem at all, but for nights I would suggest trying it the first night and see how you feel about it. Sounds like a good location to stay though!

The site is up year round. Lot's of sites link to it these days since I have been doing it for several years. Feel free to ask me any questions here.

we are staying at the Holiday Inn in Burbank. should we drive to the game or do you have other suggestions?
That is a good location and there are a lot of restaurants around there in walking distance - I know it well.

Personally, I would take the Metrolink train to Old Pasadena and then the free shuttle to the game. Driving in AND out is going to be crazy and very expensive to park on Game Day. The Metrolink is walking distance from your hotel. It is efficient and reasonably priced. You can scout a day or two before and take the train to Old Pasadena for souvenir shopping, restaurants, movies, and bars. It is not direct - you will have to change trains. But that also gives you the opportunity to see other things like Chinatown or Olvera Street. If it works for you, then do it on Game Day.

Anything to worry about at the Sierra Madre Villa station? I notice there is a shopping mall close by in case the station parking is full.

It will be very safe walking to and from the stadium on that day. There will be a lot of people doing it if you take the route from the Parsons parking lot area. If you take other routes coming back after dark, you might find yourself alone on some not so well lit streets. Even so, it is probably still safe but just letting you know.
