I'm a relatively new Iowa b-ball fan, so not so familiar with Wisconsin's style of dirty play, trying to fool the refs, etc. I think the Davison molestation of Connor last year was my introduction.
Now, it's plain to me that this team is coached in this way, and they're experts at playing dirty and getting away with it. They try to hurt people. They also try to cheat as much as possible by fooling the refs.
This thread inspired me this morning to re-view parts of the game, and I can see numerous times where there's evidence that yes, they are trying to hurt people. One play I have on the screen right now took place with 9:50 left in the 2nd half. Wisconsin in-bounds play.
If you watch in real time, it looks like incidental contact. Absolutely. No doubt. Doesn't look intentional at all.
But if you slow it down frame by frame, you see what really happens. These guys are subtle. Clearly they are taught how to get away with this crap.
Davis is taking the ball out from the side. Reuvers is at the top of the key with Garza playing off him about 3 feet. Trice is in the lane, with JoeT on him. Reuvers is facing the basket. Trice comes up the lane to go around a screen by Reuvers, who's still facing the basket. JoeT is too far back to fight over the screen, so he cuts towards the opening between Reuvers and Garza to go under the screen. At that point, when Reuvers sees what JoeT is doing, he immediately turns away to his right, and sticks his left arm out, and catches JoeT in the face with his elbow.
JoeT goes to the floor briefly (probably saw stars) but gets back up.
The thing is, Reuvers doesn't swing his elbow. Again, it's subtle. Maybe he didn't really mean to elbow Joe in the face - but at the least he meant to put his forearm there. The move really doesn't make much sense unless he was trying to make contact. And there's no doubt he knew Joe was coming through there, because he was facing that way when Joe made the cut.
