Tomorrow is Women’s Basketball Media Day at Carver. We will get the chance to talk with Coach Bluder, as well as the players.

If anyone has any specific questions for Coach Bluder/Players go ahead and throw them out there and I will consider them.
Ask Coach Bluder for any specifics on the rumored changes to the team defensive scheme! Enjoy your media day

I would like to hear what Lisa has to say about Shateah. In addition to her general progress, what role/position is she working toward and whether she will get more game minutes?
I have just been informed this morning that Wetering has suffered a torn ACL and will miss the entire season.

I think Ediger will play the power forward position, maybe a little small foward? I don't think she will back up the center position.

I think she will be the backup 4 by the end of the year (if not sooner). But if one of Cook or O'Grady get hurt, I wouldn't be surprised to see her play minutes at 5.

Re: Back-up PF. I'm curious to the release point on Ediger's outside shot. Is it still as low as it was in some of her high school film?

Re: Back-up C. Did you all see Bluder's comments on this from the transcript Kyle posted in the other thread? She sounded pretty high on Cook still -- not necessarily offensively but praised her defense, rebounding, and "doesn't make mistakes." Mentioned something about the offense hadn't quite "clicked" yet with O'Grady but was still very optimistic that it would come.

Based on Coach Bluder's comments, I think the backup 5 role might playout like the 2/3 last season. The veteran (Cook this season, Sevillian last season) starts out with the role, but the younger player(s) (O'Grady) will eventually take over.

Not making mistakes is a good thing, but unless she's improved dramatically in the paint, her offense as the 5 is very limited. Not having a scoring threat at the 5 will cause spacing issues for the offense.

The future is generally a lessor concern, but we are going to need a 5 to replace Monika at some point in the future, be it next year or the year after. Goodman is already going to lose a season of development with her injury. I'm not sure we can afford O'Grady only playing in blowouts.

Would need to hear more info before I start drawing conclusions. How was the scrimmage structured? How many minutes did everyone play? May never know. Fortunately, exhibition vs Truman State Thursday.
At this point, I am assuming that nothing else is coming out about the scrimmage.

"The bulk of Hawkeye women’s basketball season ticket sales typically comes from single-game sales. Two years ago, about 2,200 season tickets were sold when the team averaged 7,102 fans per home game, its highest mark in over a decade.

With a week until its Nov. 9 opener against New Hampshire, the Iowa women had sold about 3,600 season tickets, a considerable bump. Tickets for the 15-game home schedule are $100 to the general public." https://www.thegazette.com/hawkeye-wrestling/buzz-for-hawkeye-winter-teams-heard-at-box-office/

These closed scrimmages are usually scripted and not played in any way close to an actual game. playing time is divided up much more evenly and coaches many times will request 5-minute blocks of the type of defense they want to work against. They really are very much like a regular practice but against different competition.

You can't really take anything team-wise from them, about all we might be able to get is how players looked individually. And since it's against the rules to release any specifics, I'd say we will just have to wait until Thursday.

Originally posted the full list of WBCA Top-25 but I'm editing post since I saw another thread on the topic.

Of our non-conference opponents, only ISU is ranked in the top-25. However, Seton Hall, UCF, and even IUPUI are all receiving votes. Expectations are also high for Duke with a new coach and a roster full of talented transfers.

Duke plays….
- Winthrop
- at Dayton
- UNC Wilmington
- Alabama (Neutral)
- App State
- Troy

Could very well be 6-0 and ranked when they play Iowa.

After the exhibition, my biggest question about our roster is: What will happen when Warnock needs a breather or is in foul trouble? It seems Ediger will not be adopting that role just yet as most of us had predicted.

Can we find a way to have two of Czinano, Cook, and O'Grady on the floor at the same time? The height would be nice but is this lineup quick enough?

Or do we go with 4 guards? Sort of the opposite problem -- the quickness would be nice on the perimeter but we could get killed on the glass.

I think Hannah Stuelke is going to be a fantastic addition to the roster next year.

They did use this guard lineup for a little bit, but yes they would get killed on the boards.

I was impressed with O’Grady on offense. Didn’t see her 1v1 on someone with the ball on defense, so can’t say much there.

The good news is I think we have plenty of decent options for this after tonight. My default to start the year would be to have Cook in that role like she was last year. She's not going to set the world on fire, but will do her job and we don't really need much offense from her.

A more creative option would be to put Affolter there. She will probably be our best rebounding wing, and I think she could put up a decent fight against an opposing 4 for a few minutes at a time. This might also work well in a zone because she's faster than Warnock. She played some 4 in the second half tonight.

The third option is to put O'Grady there and shift back to the schemes we used with Stewart and Gustafson a few seasons ago. Having a player that is great in the low post and a threat out to the three-point line is a luxury that will be nice to have. That said, this would be by far the worst defensive option. O'Grady isn't particularly quick.

A couple of times I noticed she didn’t box out well. We are in the process of getting BTN+ and I’m hoping to rewatch Sunday if I have time to break some stuff down.

I see that IUPUI(December 21) is the consensus pick to win the Horizon League.
Sucks that this is a Tuesday 2pm game. The crowd will be half the size - advantage IUPUI. Men play that night, but they aren't televised. Don't know why the women can't play at 5:30/6 and the men at 8/8:30 like opening night next week.

Agreed. It's complete crap to play a game in the middle of the day on a weekday as it is. The BIG needs to knock that BS off. The only bonus is that barring any technical issues the full replay will be available on BTN plus. Usually I will follow the game tracker and listen to radio live and then watch the replay later. I prefer watching the games live, but when this stuff does happen, watching the replay already knowing the outcome allows you to watch the players more without worrying about the score and get a better read on how players are progressing.

To the defense of the players, from what I saw Truman State was doubling the post which didn't leave much space to box out. Still I saw several players fighting for rebounds which has to improve this season for Iowa to have a chance at a BTT. I really liked O'Grady. You can't teach size. I was not impressed by Monica's play. She seemed slower and did not finish around the rim the way I expect her too. BTN plus only had the 2nd half replay though. Don't know if the 1st half was any different. O'Grady might be starting before the end of the year. She looked fantastic and really in rhythm with Clark. Clark seemed to enjoy her being there too as it's easier to feed the post when you have a 6'4" player that can go up and get it. She seemed to enjoy working with taller bigs over the summer as well when she was playing in Hungary.

O'Grady might be starting before the end of the year.
OK, I totally share your excitement about O'Grady's potential, but let's not get carried away. Keep in mind that we saw her playing against the 2nd string center from a D2 school. So Czinano missed a few shots she usually makes. Hardly enough to forecast our 1st-team All B1G center losing her spot in the starting lineup. o_O I'm just glad that we still have some viable depth at the 5 since Goodman's unfortunate injury.

Monica underwhelmed me at times last year too. She can disappear for long stretches and then suddenly can't miss. Still waiting for her to develop a jump shot and to show the she can be a defensive presence. Goodman was actually more consistent and a better defender and I'm really sad she's out this year. Sharon reminded me a lot of Jamie Cavey who turned into a 2 time all BIG player. Yes we do still need to see more from O'Grady before declaring her the starter. And yes she was playing against D2 competition so who knows if she's that good or Truman State is that bad. But to her potential she played alongside one of the best bigs in the country in HS so she's no stranger to competition. She has raw skills and hustles. Last night she was a grown women against girls in the post. She will likely be a 1st round pick when she finishes her career. I think with the way Iowa develops post players and O'Grady's height and raw talent, coach Jansen will make her something special.

0. I am also very sad for Goodman and liked her game very much.
1. I will be the first to agree that Czinano is a worse than average defender for her position.
2. It is inaccurate to claim Czinano "disappeared for long stretches." I hear that phrase a lot but do not think it means much. It may be a feeling you have, but Czinano shot 67% last year so the feeling is not supported by statistics. I'm not sure if your comment about Goodman being "more consistent" was about Czinano's offense or defense, but it's just not true about Czinano's offense.
3. Czinano developing more of a jump shot would help her overseas pro prospects but will not make or break our offense. To my eye she had become quite reliable at knocking down those 10-12 foot baseline jumpers off of Clark kickouts (or in the key for the inbounds plays). Otherwise, we have a plethora of offensively capable guards who we would rather have taking jump shots than Monika. We are at our best when she working on the block or in a pick and roll scenario.
