Hawkeye Women’s BBall Season 2023-2024

In each of the losses, they've stopped pushing the pace quite early and struggled in half court offense. I'd like to know Clark's 4th quarter 3 pt %. Seems like her legs are gone and she's not making as many but I could be imagining that. Would help to give her a 2 minute break per quarter or at least the first three in my opinion. The team should be able to survive that. Asking her to play 38-40 minutes & assume so much of the scoring load seems to take its toll.
For someone who I think is really in tune with game situations, CC seems to really come apart when things are not going well: forcing passes into microscopic holes, taking heroic shots when they're not necessary. A generational superhero, but definitely not infallible.

The similarity with the OSU game in particular is the home team is making a run, the full-house crowd is going nuts, the players are feeding off the crowd, the refs go into 'let-em-play' mode, and we just succumb to the pressure. Tough situations for sure.

It was hard to tell, but looked to me like after the game the Neb players all went to the middle of the court to join the fans, so the post game handshake was just with the Neb coaches and staff. We were then escorted straight to the locker room with no fan autographs. Realistically, I think it has to be this way, but kind of a shame.

Gabby Marshall really hustling on D, but she just hurts us on offense. I'd put this loss on her as much as any other player. McCabe needs more minutes, even if it hurts us a bit on defense. She's definitely more confident with her shot
The Marshall D apologists are starting to get exhausting. watch the game again. Could clip 10 instances on defense where she either goes under screens vs shooters and gives up a 3, or turns to watch a shot go up on defense and her girl goes by to get the rebound, or gives up a clear path layup. Last year and years past, I agree, she played much better defense - this year her effort is poor, sorry, it's poor. Not to mention she wants nothing to do with the ball if neither of her first 2 threes go in. They tried to run a play for her twice in the 2nd half and she made sure she wasn't even beyond the 3 point line so that she didn't have a chance to shoot it.

It's might seem foolish to question a seasoned coach with nearly 900 wins, and I'm sure Bluder sees more than we do in practice situations. But at this point its starting to appear like she's just stubbornly sticking to keeping Gabby in, regardless. Against Nebraska, we were having hard time scoring in the 4th, the box-in-one was causing fits in our offense; Gabby was again ice cold; (therefore not stretching the floor) and we have probably our best pure shooter watching from the bench. If she'd been giving Taylor more reps during the season, I think she comes in with confidence, and integration into the offense. Plus, I think Taylor has been playing better D than Bluder seems to give her credit for. Someone trained in interpreting data might wonder whether Coach may be overly-enamored with Gabby's over/under stats; (which she has brought up repeatedly) without considering that Gabby plays the bulk of her minutes with the starting five, and at the beginning of quarters when those players are rested and coached up.

Bluder admitted on her call-in show Monday that Taylor needs to get into these games; of course that's her fault. I agree, when she does play her entire game is improved, plus her shot release is quicker than Gabby's. Caitlin seems to look for Taylor those rare times they're on the court together. She needs 10-12 minutes/game, every game down the stretch to establish some rhythm.

Our 3 pt %s are certainly trending in the right direction:

Stuelke: 50%
McCabe: 43.8%
Martin: 40.5%
Clark: 39.9%
Davis: 38.6%
Gyamfi: 37.5%
Affolter: 33.3%
Marshall: 31.6%
Feuerbach: 25.6%

Between this game, the in state schools who will all be good, the Champions Classic where we'll play two of UConn, Louisville, and/or Tennessee-- that's the bulk of our non-conference schedule for next year. Add a few mid-majors in the Quad 2-3 range and a few low majors in the Quad 3-4 range and we're done.

The Champions Classic is great publicity but kind of surprising for us as I'm expecting some growing pains early next year! The only time we've truly "gone for it" in the non-conference in recent years was Clark's junior year which everyone could see was going to be a veteran group with very high expectations.

At least twice on her call-in show, Bluder has spoken of three neutral site games they were working on for 24-25. So, may still be one more to come. And, once she hinted that one would be comparable to the Crossover.

According to Bluder’s radio show from a couple weeks ago, there were 3 marquee non-conf games on neutral floors in the works. Looks like one is still left to be announced.

IMO I think they get too comfortable and think CC will pull the game out. Obviously, she is jsut human and cannot do it every game. This to me is a coaching problem, players have to go 40 minutes every game and that means every player not just CC.

Wow, really, a coaching problem, that’s new on these message boards. I’ve never heard them blame the coaches for anything….

Here’s the deal… we have three losses, all to tournament teams, two of them are five of the best teams in the country…

The late letdowns are disconcerting, but so is our lapses in giving up second chance points, and so is our propensity to start the game slow… You should be getting the drift that this happens to teams. It’s part of the things you have to work on, and they rarely get fixed overnight….

Seems strong… I’m trusting the coach that got them to the final game last year can make these kinds of decisions for

Hell question the coaches, fuvck this is a message board. That’s pretty much all they were designed for.

Because dammit, we have to have somebody to blame if they had only done it the right way we would’ve won easily🤷‍♂️

When CC committed to the Hawks 5 years ago, I posted on FB that this was an important moment. But I could NEVER have predicted (ok, nor could anyone) that THIS would happen. As we gaze back a bit on CC's career at Iowa, one of the (many) things that will establish her legacy is her overall stats. It's feasible that no one else will ever achieve her 3600+ points and 1100-ish assists; but when you add the 900+ rebounds, you're really talking about a level of accomplishment that will likely never be duplicated. These are all negatively correlated stats; in the sense that accomplishing one makes it harder to accomplish the other. What a gift she's been to all of us as Hawk fans, her fellow Iowans, and to the sport in general. She's an inspiration beyond the game.

Before today’s losses, I was figuring moves up by USC, holds by others and a drop to #7 or #8. With these other losses, maybe #6 for the Hawks. Lots of teams with similar records. How far will Indiana move up?

So is Goodman graduating? She is participating in senior day, Kylie is not….

This would mean a scholarship is available for next year.

Kylie has said that she wants to stay another year to get her masters
Well so did Goodman previously. But the thing is both are technically juniors — they each have 2 years of eligibility left. I can’t think of another example of someone simply foregoing a year (two actually lol) of eligibility to graduate early.

Paula Valino Ramos did back in 2020. And if I remember right she made that call before Covid shut everything down.

Iowa State's Jadda Buckley passed on an extra year awhile back. I'd venture a guess that Bill Fennelly went home and kicked the family dog when she told him that.

I’m guessing Goodman sees the writing on the wall and recognizes that playing time next year will be even harder to come by with no post departures and Heiden coming in.

It would certainly explain why her playing time has disappeared the past few games as well.

Warnock decided to forgo a possible 5th season just this past year. CC is doing the same.

Goodman has been in college for four years. Some people just want to graduate and move on.

Lots of kids have foregone the 5th year (tbh there wasn’t room for Warnock, I think she *may* have come back given the opportunity — but Bluder felt Hannah was ready at the 4 while others weren’t to take over at 2/3, which was the right decision IMO). Very few kids — especially homegrown Iowa kids — forego year 4. This is unusual/unexpected.

I am sad for Sharon's time on the team coming to an end sooner than we expected. By all accounts she is a great person and teammate. She was an important piece her freshman year, and gave us some quality minutes earlier this season too. I'm thinking especially about the second K-State game when she started and Hannah was still injured. It's become cliche to say at this point (because ACL's are sadly so common), but "we'll never know what could have been" given how that injury in the middle of her career hampered her development.

I can understand. I played small college football. Had some success and even if I was offered a other year(team would have been salty), I'm not sure I would have taken it. I was ready to move on.
