Hawkeye Women's BBall Season 2022-2023

Tough break for Kylie. She had adjusted well by the end of the season, and I was expecting a jump in her play this year.

The good news is that this opens up an opportunity for backup minutes at the 3. I'd like to see how Affolter has progressed this off-season. She showed real signs of being a strong perimeter defender and rebounder last year, but we only got glimpses.

Stuelke could also be an interesting option. A lineup with Clark, O'Grady/Warnock, and Stuelke could actually make rebounding a team strength.

A real loss for the 2022-23 season that really hurts the quickness and toughness of the team. Of returning players, KF is quickest to a loose ball and most likely to dive on the floor for a loose ball. With Taiwo also moving on, defensive quickness and driving quickness have also taken a real hit.
Iowa will be fine. Davis and McCabe are both defensive playmakers. It opens up more backup minutes for everyone.

Hope you're right. Wouldn't have guessed that about Davis given that the defensive analytics, however seriously flawed, say she is a poor defender.

On Central Michigan's good team in 2019-20, her Her Hoops Stats defensive rating was 4th on her team of the 5 players who played 20 minutes a game, and that defensive rating placed her in the bottom quarter nationally (23rd percentile). On Central Michigan's good team in 2021-21, her Her Hoops Stats defensive rating was 5th on her team of the 6 players who played 20 minutes a game, and that defensive rating placed her in the bottom decile nationally (9th percentile). On Central Michigan's horrendous team in 2021-22, her Her Hoops Stats defensive rating was 3rd on her team of the 6 players who played 20 minutes a game, and that defensive rating placed her in the bottom decile nationally (5th percentile).

Of course, individual defensive ratings can be misleading because, among other things, they reflect team defensive ratings. And Central Michigan has been bad to horrendous on defense while Davis was there, despite the presence of an all-league defensive guard (Micaela Kelly) in 2019-20 and 2020-21, an award Davis has never received.

On the plus side, Davis' steal rates have been average to better during her three years, placing at the 55th, 70th and 49th percentiles. For comparison, Gabbie's steal rates have been at the 68th, 89th and 77th percentiles.

Davis set scoring records at her last stop and had 18 against us a couple years ago. I think she can be part of the offense quickly.

Analytics are nice but they really don't tell the whole picture. Molly is definitely not a poor defender. She had five steals against Iowa in the NCAA tournament and 3 against an excellent Michigan team that same year. About 50% of the games she played in she racked up multiple steals so her on-ball defense is excellent. She is going to challenge guards on the perimeter and will be aggressive. She's not afraid to be all up in the other players also. Her only weakness is lack of size so taller players will shoot over her. But I think her skillset is an overall plus.

I believe she will step up to competition in the BIG. The team defense should be improved as a whole even with the loss of KF.

What Davis brings offensively will also help the defense. Kylie has size and length but her ball skills were/are lacking. Davis brings excellent ball skills which means fewer points off turnovers.

I think losing Kylie we lose a lot of intangibles but other than CC, there's not really anyone in the system that irreplaceable.

I won’t mention any names but I see at least 3-4 players in our roster of 15 that will see little or zero playing time. No way 15 players can be remain happy and I anticipate some transfers.
No doubt. Its great having Monica return, but it does have a ripple down effect for others playing time, and just like the guys, everybody wants to play now....

I agree as long as there are no more injuries. Still plenty of talent there - but now it will get depleted with another injury.

I thought there was only one injured player lost for the year. If one poster says 3-4 would be leaving while another says losing a second player will deplete the roster, which is it? I am assuming that Wetering will be back for this fall since she's had almost a year to recover.

Yes Wetering is back along with Sharon Goodman. This is still a deep team, but the guard court needs to stay healthy.

The roster will be deeper this year despite KF being injured. We add Davis so we have a true backup at the 1 who can also slide to the play the 2. McCabe can play the 2-3. Syd did not get much playing time last year but she'll likely back up the 2-3 as well. Stuelke can play the 3-4-5. Wettering is a 3 according to Bluder and hasn't really played so not sure what she can do yet but she is an emergency body with size/length.

Our front court is as deep as ever.

Our backcourt is still deep just less experienced. We return our starters at the 1-3 but KF was pretty much the primary backup for all three positions in a sense. We didn't really have a PG other than Clark but Kylie brought the ball up the floor when Clark rested. We also lost Tomi backing up the 2-3. But we gain Davis (1-2) and McCabe (2-3) and Syd returns who played in limited games but did play all three guard positions mostly in junk minutes.

The real issue as far as minutes is balancing the starters minutes with the reserves. We can afford to rest our starters a few more minutes a game, especially if we have a lead. I think last season there was a stretch where our players were exhausted.

We will see some players leave (or not use their COVID year and grad transfer or just move on) because we don't have roster spots. However, given the deep Iowa ties among most of the role players likely to see fewer minutes, I'm not as concerned about losing players over PT. My bigger concern is getting players the reps they need once the Seniors graduate, transfer etc.

I think Lisa brought molly in for ball handling and offense as it struggled more without CC. Her experience at point driving and dishing plus scoring.hope so

Wow October 28th? That seems like our earliest exhibition game we’ve ever had
Yeah, looking back they are generally 3-5 days before the opener. Curious if they may have a second exhibition game between Oct 28 and Nov 7.

I found this.....

"According to NCAA rules, schools are allowed two exhibition games per season, one public and one non-public."
In that case, it will be Nebraska-Kearney and then very likely Creighton in the closed scrimmage.

Did we play Creighton in a closed scrimmage last year? Wonder if their familiarity with us contributed to them knocking us off in the tournament? Especially with Jensen on their roster….. that being said we still have to win that game

Bluder talked about the familiarity in pregame press conferences and how it was a concern. Post game she talked about officiating. That was my take as well. They know the Iowa system, but if the game had been called closer to other games Iowa would have won I think. Of course Iowa was good enough to win anyway, they just did not make the shots that normally fall. I seem to remember point blank misses by both Clark and Cinzano at the end of the game. That said, I'm not sure you avoid a scrimmage with them on the chance you might see them in the tourney? But it could get chippy this year as well..

Creighton is a pretty good program to have for a scrimmage every year. The chance that you face them specifically in the tournament is low. Probably won’t happen again.

Facing a team like Creighton is a good barometer to show what needs to be worked on. They played Creighton in the NCAA in 17-18 and again last season. With how the NCAA tries to keep teams closer to home for better attendance if seeding works out it could very well happen again, let's just hope they end up at Iowa State instead.

I’m all for playing Creighton again lol. If we can’t beat ‘em we don’t deserve all the hype. We gotta learn how to win against different teams. With greater depth, talented incoming recruits AND the experience of learning hard lessons, there is no reason we shouldn’t beat them if we had to play again this year or next.

Steals are great (obviously) as they equate to a zero point possession for the other team. When I think of a good defender though, I picture someone that stays in front of their opponent, can deny them the ball, and contests their shots (without fouling) resulting in poor FG %.

To make a steal there's usually risk involved, and risk can go either way. Davis mentioned in an interview her biggest adjustment coming to Iowa involves dealing with increased athleticism. Harder to make those steals vs quicker players, resulting in more backdoors/uncontested shots. Imagine McCabe will experience the same adjustments.

Steals easy to count...the rest of defensive skills much more subjective. Will be interesting to see their contributions once the bullets start flying.

Creighton also took us out of the NCAA tournament in 2018.

I’m surprised more people didn’t talk about this at the time. I remember that 2018 game well. But it lit a fire under our ass, and then we made the Elite 8. Hoping for the same results this time around. We’re much deeper if anything now. Not quite sure how the ceilings of that crew compares to ours tho, may be a wash in the end. We are better on efficiency / fundamentals but they likely take it in toughness / defense.

We are still solid. Great back court still.

Just do not want to see it add up again where some small injuries keep a couple players out for a few games.... that is where losing anyone becomes difficult.

I still like our guard depth over most teams at this moment.

I listened to Kate Martin on a podcast of her former HS teacher. Some key takeaways:

She was shyer / more low key than I expected — spoke very much to the levelheadedness and steadiness that Bluder refers to when speaking of her.

Kate said she has never watched the Creighton game and never wants to. She felt like a total failure after that loss. Very different from Clark who I recall said she has seen the ending over and over.

She said she has been taking and making more shots this summer than ever before. She believes she needs to be more of an offensive threat to get more defenders on her. She has felt she doesn’t get the respect from defenders she deserves.

The goal for this season is to win a national championship. Very matter of fact about it tbh.

Bonus: She and Monika are roommates. Clark and Kiley are as well, anyone know any other fun pairings?

Have you listened to the Hawks on Hawks podcast? Monica and Connor McCaffery interview other athletes….. I really enjoy it…..

Monica was a guest on T’ed up too and told some funny stories about Kate on the court….must flip a switch during games cause she isn’t shy when she plays 😂
