Hawkeye Women's BBall Season 2022-2023

It's very possible we could lose 2 or3 non-conference games and still have a great team and a great year. This team is going to be really, really good.
We're in a great position to legitimately go undefeated in non-conf. Do I think we're the favorite to beat UConn in the PK tourney? No, but UConn is going to be doing some reloading and it'll take them a few games to iron out the kinks. The timing of the game is very much in our favor -- and it's on a neutral court. They've hit some bumps when making adjustments / figuring out lineups in the past.

We're incredibly fortunate that we're hitting the ground running with so many veterans, who have learned many hard lessons against different kinds of teams (including UConn) together. I'm hopeful we can exploit this unique opportunity, most teams don't get one like this. And of course we have to get past OSU who will also be a challenge, no matter their transfer woes.

Uconn lost Williams and Ododa, but have experience with Fudd/Muhl and DeBerry. Do we really expect that much ironing out? It seems like they all have a year of experience playing at their positions? One thing we will need to see from Iowa is consistency. It seemed like for whatever reason the team was out of sync early last year and the 3's were not falling. I'm hoping they start strong this year.

Yes I agree lol.

Our old pal Paige Buecker's is back as well. I think Iowa was out of synch early last year because of covid issues.

I realize UConn returns 3 of the best players in the country (you could make a case that 2 of them ARE the best players in the country). I agree that they’re the heavy favorite to win. I’m saying that if there’s ever gonna be a time for me to be excited to play UConn, it’s with this team, this year, against their team, this year, in November. We couldn’t ask for a better shot.

We talk a lot about things falling the exact right way to get a 1 seed / final four berth, this is one such opportunity along the way. If we play at our best and UConn hasn’t figured out how to play at their best yet, we have a shot to win. I wouldn’t be as excited if the game were in the tournament or at UConn or if it were anytime last year.

I thopught when we played UConn they didnt really get our best shot. Clarks shoot wasnt falling early on and she got frustrated. Some of that was defense and some of that was it being a huge game. Last year, it was partially covid, but I suspect focus on dfense and Clark playing in FIFA with a smaller ball for the summer might have missed with the touch a little. Early in the year could be an advantage for us, but I if the team is playing like they did in the big ten tourney, they can be a problem for anyone.

Even though we have our core back, there is still a lot of work to do to figure out who plays and when. Iowa has a lot more depth this year. I dont know how many people noticed, but there were some teams (Michigan comes to mind) where the team made a run with O'Grady in the game, so there are some situations where her defense and play style is more valuable than Monica's scoring (When Caitlin is on fire?). Both Goodman and O'Grady are really good, but will we reliably see both of them, or will one of them see most of minutes at backup? The power forward is also much deeper this year, but who emerges out of the pack? I think for early tough games we rely more on the starting five, but I suspect minute distibution is going to shift as the year goes on.

All FIBA women's competitions use the same size basketball as NCAAW, WNBA, and girl's high school.

Clark's shot wasn't falling that game, but Warnock and Marshall were on fire from three (7-9 combined) and that helped keep it relatively close. I don't think it was our best shot, but it was pretty close.

Looking at that box score is interesting now, because of Iowa's 8 players who saw action in that game, 6 are returning this year, including all 5 starters. And if you don't count Megan Meyer's minute and a half, it's 6 of 7 players returning. UConn only has 3 of 7 players returning from that game, and one of those 3 was/is a bench player.

UConn will still be a solid favorite if we play them (Bueckers is great, and their length and athleticism will cause us problems), but I certainly think this game is more winnable than the Sweet 16 was 2 years ago.

Agree with this take, and hope Iowa gets the chance to play UCONN. UCONN seldom loses to teams with a defense/rebounding profile like Iowa, but perhaps Iowa can have an Arkansas-like offensive performance from Jan. ‘21 and pull the upset. UCONN also lost to Villanova last year, although Paige didn’t play. UCONN’s remaining losses the past two seasons were to teams with decidedly better defense/rebounding profiles than Iowa.

10 - 1 or better would be a good start.

10-1 or better would be an outstanding start! Means that we beat 2 of the 3 ISU, UConn and NC State (all 3 top 10ish teams). 2 of those games are at Carver so it certainly is possible.

Looking forward to a great season of Hawkeye Hoops

First impressions:

-All of the games from Drake on Nov. 13 through Northern Iowa on Dec. 17 should be competitive and exciting. The team will need to gel a lot sooner than they have the last two seasons to make this most of this schedule.

-The P5 and in-state opponents we already knew about.

-Belmont has been one of the best mid-majors in the last couple years. They will be dangerous and hungry for a resume-boosting win.

-I'm surprised we scheduled Southern again after the foul fest that was last year's game. They fouled us 29 times in 40 minutes.

-Does the Dartmouth game strike anyone else as a bit out of left field?

Re: Dartmouth, Emma Koch is a senior for Dartmouth and is from Iowa City and played at Iowa City West. I'm guessing they sought Iowa out for that game.

Bluder talked about how they were playing Hannah outside, but she shes her as capable of playing either the 4 or the 5. She also mentioned that Goodmans return may allow O'Grady to shift some to the 4 as that ois her preferred position. Jenson mentioned on the T'd up podcast that we might se some 3pt shots from Monica this season. How much of this is spit-balling and how much is getting a real look? There were times against tall teams where I thought giving O'grady minutes backing up Warnock would have allowed us to rebound better, but the tradeoff would have been outside driving defense as I understand it.

Also, its not clear to me that the 4 is less crowded than the 5?

5) Cinzano, O'Grady, Goodman
4) Warnock, Ediger, Wetering, Stuelke, Gamfly, Ogrady?
