Housing is now unaffordable for a record half of all U.S. renters, study finds

Affordability is a moving window. The renter can't afford high rent anymore, but they still own a $40k+ vehicle and go out to eat and the bars all the time, drink their Starbucks, and go to Cancun over spring break.

Sell your car, take your own lunch to work, or (gasp) move to a less nice apartment. Boom! Now you can afford it again you pathetic little sissy, excuse making, left leaning, pieces of shit.

You know how I know you are a boomer with no concept of the world and education that stopped in about 1995?

Yeah and they blamed it on oil prices before, and then they blamed it on inflation. So with Inflation coming down, gas prices coming down, rents and housing even coming down in over 50% of markets, we need to hold onto something to be mad about.
This isn't a new phenomena. The president takes credit and gets blame for shit they don't really control.

Not new to Joe.

If we took all the illegals Biden has let in a created a state they would be the 17th largest state in the country. It’s an invasion.
Sarcastic Emma Stone GIF

Which will then be bought up by conglomerates in about 5 minutes and put back on the market as rentals. Rinse and repeat.
Amidst all the shitty talking points, this remains the issue.

Hell, I worked for one of these companies for 12 months helping them gobble up 300 homes in one year in 2015ish.

I don't know how you stop it, but its way out of control and people don't know it, or ignore it.

Bring receipts please. You haven't thus far.
LOL sorry for the confusion. I got it all figured out below. Thanks for clearing it up.

Ok I am going to try it a different way since you claim its false (LOL) -

Northern Believes in the following:
1. Biden is doing a great job with the economy and rents have only gone up slightly more than inflation over the last several years
2. Bird and Reynolds are at the top of the food chain in Iowa and need to get to the bottom of illegal searches in Iowa and face backlash for the illegal search and resultant plea deals. Let alone all the other individuals whose privacy was invaded in the process.

Thanks, I really appreciate you for clearing up the confusion.

Why should this be a republican plan? Why not democrat plan? President Biden could do something if you want to go that route. Just like having us all pay for $5B in student debt.

The government spending and Biden policies put us into this mess and now you want them to create legislation to fix it? The same government that created this you trust to fix it? Biden is running this country like his own personal piggy bank which has created this mess.
I don’t much care for Trump but I support his policies.
You may want to look at the deficits Trump ran there chief.

The amount of immigrants as a percentage of the US Population was 14% in 1990's and 2000's, dipped a bit, but guess what we are 13% now. Due to decreasing births immigrants will become a larger portion of the population. We may have numerical a larger number of immigrants coming into the US, but as a percentage basis less than the 1800's and early 1900's and similar to the last several decades. Its not to say immigration law needs to be reformed. Trump didn't want any immigrants coming in. That isn't a suitable solution yet thats what most republicans want. They claim they will commit a terrorist attack in the future even though its not true. Just a lot of baloney in it all. I almost spit out my drink this morning. A republican panelist was on CNBC when they did the GDP number. He said you know normal americans experience all the these wrong in this country like illegal immigration. LOL. So the handful of states that are on the Mexico border and primarily just the border towns and counties are the biggest impacted areas, but please yes lets extrapolate to all Americans and we are being impacted by immigration (yes by lowering the inflation rate with blue collar worker). Something no one talks about is due to Trumps moratorium on immigration that was part of the reason for the inflation as well as excess money in peoples pockets as there were not enough workers to do the necessary jobs.

Obviously there are those that work hard, are good with the limited money they have, yet have a hard time making ends meet. I feel sorry for those individuals. I can't imagine not being able to put food on the table for my family.

Then there are those that say they can't afford housing yet have cable, fancy phones, fancy cars, a fancy boat, etc. Those people can eat a dick.

So just a dummy then

who thinks a $7 latte a day adds up to 200K and doesn't know the average cost of a car is 47!K, above what you even suggestion in your condescending uneducated post.
Bruh, I'm worth $5.1M, and I've never driven a car that I paid more than $15k for. I saved and invested during my 20's and 30's.

Keep making excuses. We know a $7 latte doesn't add up to $200k, but it's the other habits of the $7 latte crowd that keeps them poor. It's the totality of their habits, their line of thinking, and people like you who continue to excuse their behavior.

Not that I agree with this line of thinking overall- however

We need basic finance classes to be mandatory every year in high school. Not an elective for a half semester, but realistic basics each year so some of these kids coming from poverty don't repeat the only money habits they have seen from their parent(s)

As i said uneducated. Cool and nice brag. Everyone around here is a millionaire, its like shawshank that way.

And yes its their line of thinking living like a homeless person not spending close to the average price of a car or enjoying a simple life pressure that's keeping them from home ownership. Not the fact that both rent and mortgages have doubled in percent of monthly income in the last couple decades making it difficult to save no matter whether you buy a latte or not to be able to afford a house. (not to mention that everytime they do catch up a bit they are rocked, great recession, inflation, housing bubble, covid) But your right its a reliable car and 2 grand a year on drinks that's holding em down.

Totally not true. The economy is the best it's ever been. Everyone is doing great in their everyday life. Inflation is way down. Things have never been more affordable.

Or maybe it's true because the exit polls revealed that it was the second most important issue to voters, behind the border. Now the DFL has to get out ahead of it and blame the Republicans just like the border is now being blamed on them.
Ironically Sharky, “affordable housing” is a product of a vigorous and healthy economy. Housing costs increase in strong economies, and there are always those folks who are not a part of the thriving economy who are hurt.

Agreed. I was just making the point that in the last couple days I'm seeing more threads about the border and economy coming from the left. The NH exit polls said that the border and economy were the 2 most important things. Now I keep reading (on here) how the Republicans are the ones responsible for both problems. I find it quite ironic. Truth be told, both are responsible and not one singular party.

There is nothing wrong per se about “the economy”....It is a false flag to lump “affordable housing” into a bad economy....This certInly is not the case now. Economies boom...all prices generally increSe. Simple economics....It defies a”simple answer”...

Bad economy causes housing to go down. Affordable housing goes down when the renters can't afford it and the landlord has to lower the price to get renters in.

I guess the real question is how much of it does Blackstone own? Their sub companies have been buying housing up for a while now.

Good start but not enough. My oldest learned the hard way that he doesn't want to be poor. As a teenager he worked in the kitchen of bar/grille. Hated the work and knew he didn't want to do crap like that the rest of his life. He also observed how the adult servers that worked there, while very good people, he wondered how they could make a living on those type of wages. I replied they can't and still have nice things. Why do you think there are trailer courts and crappy apartments? He got scared straight, works hard for his money, and understands the value of a dollar. In short, I raised him to be frugal.

I have NEVER witnessed a “rent” decrease in my life.....ever. Here in the metro area, you can’t keep up with the new apartment construction. And most of those joints a 1 berm starts close to $900/month...and “older” apartments/rentals pretty much base their prices on current market values. Now there are cheaper places for sure, but mostly they are quite frankly, not fit for living.

Let’s start by prohibiting large corporations from buying up residential properties

Same with foreign investment in residential real estate. They can get the **** out.

Good luck getting anything like that passed. Not going to take much for the people that own to realize how much that harms their finances.

(Or feeds their greed)

How many people do you know that will make a move that could potentially lower the value of any property they own?

Not sure if I would call that greed for a 50 year old couple that is planning on selling in 10 years and retiring elsewhere

If you “think” about it past your nose Zach, you are stacking the future against you kids doing this. Selling to a business corporation bypasses the intent of “market forces” and is contrived in a way that guarantees (un)warranted price increases and in fact encourages higher rates of inflation. It’s long and complicated but it is not healthy for a
Vibrant and reliable economy. It does guarantee a “quick buck” however.

I am thinking past my own nose

It would not concern me...I am surrounded by millions of acres of unused land.

Go back to what I asked...how do you convince the general public to support politicians that are running on an idea that could lower their net worth?

You can debate if it's a good idea or not with someone else...I just think it would be a difficult sale to the voter in the privacy of the voting booth.

Ah....the conflicts of being human....Christ told us life was not to be easy. And damn Him for being right...again.

I’m in the middle of establishing lease and rental restrictions for our single family residential HOA to prevent exactly that. For about a year people just looked at me blankly, but recently they have all started to grasp it. It’s better to stop something from happening than to try to contain it after it’s already taken hold.

You did call it Bidenomics, didn’t you?
not exactly.

I’ve stated in this thread a couple times I think it’s a local and state issue for the most part.

Problem for Biden is when folks are asked about the economy, not being able to afford rent tends to make people's to not like the Economy much. Same with mortgage rates. Joe controls neither but they factor significantly in people’s view of the economy
Hence why I think coining “bidenomics” was political stupidity.

Quite an indictment of Bidenomics right there
