HBOT has always been a polarizing place, but it seems we are more divided than ever. America was always held together by at least a notional set of common principles. I find those tough to see at the moment. MAGA seems more an “end justifies the means” crowd and the never Trumper values seem diametrically opposed to that. Curious your take and whether OPs mom could bring y’all together.

Scale for the poll:

1. I would sing kumbaya with all you sons of bitches (in other words I love everyone)
2. I’m against the other side’s politics, but don’t let that interfere with friendships/colleagues/family
3. We are all Americans, but that is about the extent of our common ground these days
4. The other “side” is unAmerican, but they are human and that is at least something
5. The other “side” is subhuman and I don’t care if they keep breathing

To keep it simple I’m breaking this up into Trump supporters and Trump detractors. If you are ambivalent about Trump (is there anyone like that left in America), just pick whichever side is closest to your view.

I don’t find anyone subhuman. Close. But not subhuman. But I also don’t care if anyone on HBOT dies. I don’t know any of you and none of you mean anything to me. Therefore, I vote Trump Detractor, Level 5.

Peace be with all of you.

NINE votes from "Trump detractors" ZERO from "Trump supporters."

I love how the right is afraid to participate in political polls even after their guy won.

How much of that do you think is due to @hawkeyetraveler being on a lot of the MAGAs' ignore lists - so they don't see the poll?

We need a good con to link this thread and urge fellow cons to vote on the poll.

Them actually voting would bust the myth that HORT is a liberal hell hole. So they don't. @Whiskeydeltadeltatango knows I'm right.

I don’t think I’m on many ignore lists - have a bunch of back and forths regularly with the usual suspects. I figured they are nursing their post celebratory hangovers this AM.

Why would he be on ignore lists?

Since only about 4% of the people in public ever talk about politics, there really isn't anyone I wouldn't happily drink a beer with. I can always walk away when people start acting like buffoons.
This convinced me to change my vote from see you at the parade to let’s grab a beer. Hell there are multiple Trump supporters on here I would happily grab a beer with.

None of the choices for me. I've always hated Trump, including when he was part of Resorts International. He's always been a clown show and his biggest talent has always been getting others to fund his projects.

That said, I want the US to prosper. I agree with some of his policies, and disagree with some of his policies. There are also policies that are inconsequential to the country or me. Unlike the majority here, it's not all or nothing for me. I can also separate the policies from the man. Trump remains a horrible person and can't just STFU and do his job.

Well, that's miles better than the sycophant responses on here.

I went out for drinks yesterday with a couple of friends who are good (retired) union democrats, one who is reasonable the other who makes chis look sane. They both had watched the inauguration, while I didn't bother as I was doing some things around the house.

I guess that makes me a #2 (no vote) although I am more of a #6 or to say IDGAF about your politics.

I just really do not like the white racist neo nazi types, white supremacists, and haters of the Constitution types that are fine with Trump editing the constitution. The White Replacement Theory people who are babies because they will not be a majority white populace are just feeble and terrible. This is the country we have, yes there are a lot of immigrants who could and should be deported. But most of these immigrants help maintain our food production and do a lot of hard labor jobs.

Stephen Miller and many of these MAGAs are just racist and that is where their ideas and plans come from. So many of these MAGAs and Trump voters say they are very Christians but when you follow this Dumpster who is so bad to their faith then that makes them really very greedy in stomping on other people's rights therefore not Christian.

There's probably 3 people in the entire United States who fit that classification, and they probably all voted for Trump. They aren't on HBOT.

When someone watches MSNBC and believes it as gospel, they convince themselves the above is prevalent enough to be considered a problem, and from there they make the leap to "almost everyone who voted for Trump is like this."

How do you unify when this is the mindset? This can't be reasoned with.

I'm more of a want nothing to do with Trump people. Certainly not subhuman. And also don't get into the nationalism aspect of "unAmerican", "traitor" and all that.

I view them generally in two groups, neither I want anything to do with. The first and largest group are the ones I pity. They're a mix of vulnerable, poor, in pain, addicted, undereducated, angry, afraid. Trump plays the grievance piano and they all dance. The second are the people who know better, but go along with it for self serving reasons. At best they're spineless, at worst, they're deplorable people.

Based on that, I went with 4, but 3 may have fit as well.

Going strictly by what’s written anonymously in this forum, it appears that many have a deep-seated hatred for other posters. That animosity isn’t fed entirely by strong differences of opinion though. The safety of anonymity also plays a role. If you put everyone from here in a room with a name tag on, a whole lot of lions would turn into lambs.

You can't really be serious about this. Shit, you can probably find 300,000 people who believe that the moon landing was fake. There are probably at least 3 people on HBOT who would fall into this classification. And no, there is no reasoning with them, so what's the point exactly?

Just curious - what policies do you agree with that he actually bothered to follow up on as president? And do you accept the damage he does to get what you want? Bottom line - you can't separate the "horrible person" from the policy decisions. Horrible people are horrible for a reason. And calling Trump horrible is being very generous.

I voted if they die they die, then changed it to grab a beer with one. I can't pretend that I don't care when other people die, they have families or loved ones that will be hurt (except for those like Brian Thompson of course!).

As much as I dislike MAGA and however delusional they are, I think we agree on more things than we disagree. I realize it's incredibly difficult to appeal to folks that live in an alternate reality - the key is to focus on the things used to distract us and turn us against each other. I've had plenty of conversations with MAGA folk and generally I can find a few areas of common ground. I enjoy a good challenge.

MAGA are like old people that have fallen for an online scam, the Nigerian Prince scam, Grandson scam, Microsoft w/e. Afterwards they advocate for the scam and make fun of others for not falling for it too! It's not their fault that their brains are smooth and they lack any semblance of logic or critical thinking - they are simply a product of their environments.
