You can't be famous for "you get what you earn" and then be above criticism when you aren't meeting the standards that you set for yourself.

Set PSU aside. @MSU158 is likely right that they are a juggernaut who can't be beat more than once or twice a decade as long as Cael is there. If Tom was consistently producing individual champs and teams that wrestled their best at the NCAA tournament, I think many of us would be pretty happy with that. I know I would!

My frustrations are less to do with losing to PSU and more to do with this team running into the same wall almost every year for over a decade. Like I said earlier, if this team goes out and wrestles well next weekend, I'll be thrilled. They're in a great spot to do so. Now they have to "earn" it.

Many criticisms are valid. But, calling for the removal of the 2nd most successful coaches of the past 20 years is where you are rightly going to get a LOT of resistance. This is especially true when NO ONE has a LEGIT candidate with ANY experience and a resume that any AD would gladly make the change to.

As highly as I do think of the Brands I am not opposed to a change. I get that Iowa is so used to being at the top that perennial top 5 finishes aren’t good enough. I just AM NOT someone that would make that change. without a VERY high level of confidence that a new coach not only could do better, but would be 100% dedicated to staying there long enough to win more NCAA Titles than Brands has.

So far, I simply do NOT see ANYONE that fits that description…

I don't think I would fire Tom. You're right that he's still extremely successful. But two things can be true at the same time:

He's the second most successful coach AND his teams have consistently underperformed when it matters most.

That speaks well to his ability to develop AA quality wrestlers and poorly to his ability to maximize those guys' results. He's developed many guys who were good enough to win NCAA titles. He's had something like 8 undefeated #1 seeds in the last 5ish years and Spencer is the only one who won a title.

I'd start with a staff shakeup and pressure from the AD to re-examine the overall training system. If we continue to see the same issues over the next couple years, his seat should be red hot. Adapt or die.

Barhow was brought in as a volunteer assistant to replace Backes.

People here are talking about hiring assistants who could effect change. Those individuals cost $$$, and they certainly won't come in as volunteers.

My only point is, if you look at the current program under Brands and the hires he's made over the years, can you be confident that he even wants to make a change-maker-type hire?

I have a slightly different take on the Hawks performance at the NCAA's. I think the Hawks wrestle to their best every match. I think they take every match as if it were life and death. Most teams and wrestlers do not do that during the season and dual mets. They get up for the NCAA tourney and have less than optimal performances during the year.
Put another way. Other teams wrestle their best at the tourney and the Hawks wrestle their best all year long. It just so happens that the Hawks beat other guys and teams when they are not wrestling their best and it looks like the Hawks are under performing at the end of the year - when other teams and guys are doing their best.

Yeah, you're full of crap. No one really cares that much over other team gear. I've lived in PA my whole life and there's a very diverse sports fan base here. PSU is the main school, but I've seen ND, Michigan OSU , Miami, Ok, etc all around the state and I've never seen anyone harassed. You're probably acting like a tool and drawing attention to yourself or maybe you look funny or something. It's not the Iowa gear, no one really cares.
