Yes...envy of the only P5 program to never win a tournament game
Yep, not a record to be proud of. I think Nebraska will be improving in men’s football and basketball. Not much doubt but how much? Maybe a great deal. Football should improve some this year but the 85 scholarship limit needs some upgrades. 2019, 2020 and 2021 classes should put us in much better position. Basketball needs a big upgrade at the 4 and 5 positions. The 1, 2 and 3 positions are athletic but need upgrades in consistent shooters.
By the way, I respect the football program that Ferentz has built. They do a great job in S & C with Doyle. They develop position players so well over the years. Take hardly recruited, lightly recruited and heavily recruited players and develop them at a high level. Have some misses but less than other programs. Like my Huskers for so long. That is/will be changing.
You have a well-deserved reputation for a tough, strong and physical offense and defense. The thing where you’ve maybe come up a bit short is skilled players on offense especially and defense. Team speed is a bit short at times. It’s hard to recruit top skilled players to leave far away from home.
But Iowa is well- coached, strong, physical and tough. Things Nebraska will get back to. Hopefully, with more skilled players and team speed. Wisconsin is another program, I think, very similar to Iowa. The people in Iowa, Wisconsin and Nebraska are similar whether people want to acknowledge it or not.
But our disadvantage is only 1.9 million people in the state. Iowa, has a million more, but has three division one football programs. That makes it tougher. Anyway, I hope all the Big Ten teams stay relatively healthy in the 2019 football season. The king of the mountain(Meyer) retired but left a full 85 scholarship total for the next Day. So some doubt is there, even if the talent is very strong. Michigan is very talented overall like PSU.
Those three programs probably have the best 85, right now. Iowa, Wisconsin, Nebraska and MSU are very close in comparing the programs 85 scholarship rosters. Northwestern(could be in the second group) and Purdue seem to be really close to the second group in its 85 rosters. Maryland(the DMV area), Minnesota and Indiana are improving and pushing forward with Illinois and Rutgers striving for a better future. Those two programs do have populated states they reside in.
Overall, the Big Ten is a well-coached conference in football. Investments in facilities and football staffs are rising faster than most other conferences. The future is bright and probably brighter in football. The conference kicks ass in wrestling and women’s volleyball. The other sports I am not as keenly aware compared to other conferences. Good luck next football season and I hope either the Hawkeyes, Badgers, Wildcats or Gophers finish behind the Huskers in the West Division.
