Hyvee vs. Publix: Who wins?

I don’t know how Publix pricing compares to Hy-Vee anymore, but years ago Publix was quite a bit more. I lived in Florida for a number of years and was never really impressed with Publix and much preferred SweetBay, but I think those might be gone.

Fareway. CB Fareway hired my son, HyVee did not. For those who know my story, know why now I will always choose Fareway over HyVee.
The HyVee I shop at has special needs people that work there and has for as long as I can remember.

Unfortunately, SweetBay has been gone for awhile - seven or 8 years. It was a terrific store for a small grocery - had a lot of premium products, with prices that were far lower than the typical high-end grocer.

Publix blows. We only go for the BOGOs and chicken PubSubs. Trader Joe’s and Aldi recently came to town. Wal Mart Neighborhood Markets have been here a couple of years. Winn Dixie has a “sip & stroll” store in Gainesville. Makes me miss Lucky’s even more. 🍺

Lucky's Market in St Pete was nice and didn't last for long

I’m sure people don’t realize these corps donate money to causes that are counter to their way of thinking on both sides of the fence.

No doubt Big Green is asking their customers to donate to some cause with Ukraine in the name. Maybe a few pennies on the dollar will actually see it's way to a Ukrainian somewhere, because they care.

Hy Vee does gas and constantly runs $0.60 off per gallon with $120.00 purchase and lets you compound them. I've literally gotten gas for free before.
Does Publix have gas?

The main driving force behind Hy Vee/ Casey's ect. Is Iowans are everywhere and we reproduce. Still like going to the same stores we saw growing up back in the motherland (Iowa).

Not to change the conversation about Hy Vee versus Publix, but does anybody shop Fresh Market? I really like them. There use to be one up here and I enjoyed it. Corporate decided to stay east of the Mississippi for some reason and close the one here. There is one in Tulsa though. I have been there. They didn't close that one, at least a couple of years ago it was open.

Edit: There is a Fresh Market in Naples my wife and I have shopped.

Edit again: I think there was one in Des Moines also before closing.

Fresh Markets has several locations here in Jax. My favorite is the one for multi millionaire folks who are in Ponte Vedra staying at their $5 million vacation condo.
The coffee, the wines, and the incredible cuts of beef 🥩 are for those who don’t worry about the price. They just fill up the back of their Bentley SUV after schmoozing with the other multimillionaires and head back over to the condo.
Yes there Are Bentley SUV’s - I saw one with my own eyes. 😳

Poors. I have my staff go get my groceries.

The Sororities to MILFs in yoga pants demo at Publix is at a completely other level compared to all grocery type chains, the one exception being Target.

Daughter is thinking of moving to the Tampa/Clearwater/St Pete area since she works remotely so any help on the names of these stores is grateful.

Italian - Mazzaro's in St Pete is probably the best Italian market outside of the NE. Cacciatore Bros on Hanley Rd near the airport is very good.

Asian - MD Oriental has multiple locations in both counties. Lien Hoa at Dale Mabry and Waters is really good. There is a Filipino grocery in Oldsmar named Philippines Market or something close to that. There is a Thai grocery on US-19 in Holiday just north of SR-54 but I can't remember the name.

Indian - there are several Indian grocery stores and spice shops near USF. Patel Brothers is one of them.

Vspicery is a very good local mom and pop spice store near the Bucs stadium. There two other good spice stores, one on McDill in S Tampa and another in downtown St Pete. I can't remember their names.

HyVee sucks. Used to be good. Now prices are much higher than their competitors, less service and then you see in the news how they treat their employees…awful. So I agree, Publix will wipe the floor with them.

There is a lot more vocal dissatisfaction with HyVee now than 10 years ago. They did well for decades to earn a reputation of being a grocer with a focus on customer service with the added bonus of being a great employer in the communities they're in. Still trading on that and the employee owned thing despite now resembling more of a Walmart kind of grocer. That rep won't last but they're probably happy being hip like... dorky midwesterners who think Mark Wahlberg is cool.

I can’t vouch for Publix, never been in one but HyVee brand selection is very good and their produce section is so much better than Fareway. Interestingly I price shopped my Thanksgiving meal at both last year and HyVee beat Fareway in almost every category. I was really surprised by that. The Fareway meat counter however is far and away the best IMO. And HyVee is smart to stay out of H-E-B territory, they’ll get destroyed in that market.

Publix is great. Way better than a bunch of shitty ethnic type stores like they have in Tampa. Plus, they give money to a lot of the causes I believe in, like Guns for Dogs and Paymore Prescriptions.

Great. Doesn’t change my opinion of how a particular store handled not hiring my son. This is my own personal boycott. I’m not asking anyone else to do the same.

Good. I won’t. You seem to be painting with a pretty broad brush. Fwiw I am on your side when it comes to special needs rights. I just don’t implicate an entire company based on one isolated situation.

13 years ago when I was an assistant manager, we used to take random grocery lists and shop both stores. Then we'd put both orders in carts in front of the store with the receipts displayed. People are ALWAYS surprised to find out that if you're buying a whole cartload of groceries hyvee is essentially the exact same price or less. Then, if you factor in the fact that no one can beat Hyvees deals, it's often cheaper than Fareway.

Faraway has hyvee beat in certain categories but if you're buying a weeks worth of general groceries, hyvee is better. Of course, hyvee has a much better selection of items including higher priced categories that make hyvee seem more expensive. Those items are not for the same customer that is shopping just fareway or shopping both stores for the most part.

What are the politics of those running these stores? Important to know before checking them out

I'm a Publix fan but I've seen their service decline. This is from a long-time friend's daughter... she posted on FB and I definitely don't see this happening at my Publix:

Three things about our Hy-Vee at 135th street...
1. A couple of months ago, I was having a day filled with unfortunate events. Then my van died when I was trying to go pick up my online grocery order. I called Hy-Vee to explain why we would be late picking up and that I wasn't sure how long it would be before someone was able to jump me. Their response "it sounds like you are having a rough day. Why don't you let us deliver the groceries to you, in less than an hour? Would that help you out?"
2. We work SO hard with our kids on their behavior. Sometimes that is effective, sometimes, it's not. But we persevere. A few weeks ago, a manager in Hy-Vee stopped me while we were shopping in-person and told me he had seen how my kids helped and behaved and was so impressed he wanted to reward them with a free pack of cookies from the bakery. It was so wonderful because they had NOT been having an exceptional day, but we had talked about turning the day around and correcting attitudes right before we walked into the store. So that just really boosted them (and me) up!
3. Yesterday, I put a small dog toy in my online order. I was contacted because that one was out of stock. They asked what I would like to substitute. I said "we just got a foster dog who's small green toy was destroyed by a neighbor dog so I'm trying to replace with something similar because I feel so bad for him!" They found a perfect replacement and put it in a bag with treats and wrote on the bag.
They are literally the best of the best and I had to shout out to them!
Tl;Dr but pics of friend's daughter please.

The new Hy Vee in Grimes is really nice. It’s their new flag ship store and I really like it. Yes, their prices are higher than Fareway but you have to hit both places anyway and it seems Fareway is upping their prices closer to Hy Vee on all the items we get there so I try to hit the Fareway stores in smaller towns when I’m traveling as they tend to have lower prices.

In my travels into the SE, I like going to Pubic’s for groceries when we vaca with a house setting. Their stores are very nice too but don’t have the amenities the new Hy-Vee’s have. Prices were very high in Florida when we visited in January compared to Hy Vee pricing for the same products.
Why do you have to hit both places? I go to the grocery store to get groceries. Why does someone go two places?

Here’s the thing about Publix, the higher the socionomocs of the area, the better is gets. The Publix in North Palm Beach is awesome. Olive bar like Fresh Market and better bakery, meat and seafood by miles. Not wasted on the poors. Smart.
