I love CJ, But Statistically...

He's a great leader, and the toughest QB we've had in a long time, but he hasn't been accurate throwing downfield all year. Maybe it's the injury, maybe not.
He's our guy thiugh

Sadly, this opinion is just plain IGNORANT. The staff felt Wadley was our 4th best option last year and gave Weismann the rock for 3 years. But for injury, Wadley would have never seen the field this year. The staff felt CJ deserved no playing time over Jake Rudock. But for injury, CJ would have never saw the field. Sometimes, when the staff feels someone is the best option, it should not be good enough for you...or are you a sheep?

Not a sheep, Not ignorant either, Thanks for keeping the discussion classy, Wadley had fumble issue's. It wasn't imagined it was real. Trust is kinda big. As far as who the best Q.B. is this year, I do trust the staff, Since I nor you have any idea how good or backup QB is I do trust the people that see them practice everyday. See I am a fan, I don't know more than the coaches like you think you do. So I do trust our staff.
Just do me a small favor, Next time you enlighten me with your football expertise try to keep it from getting personal, IMO it makes you come off as a real Asshole.

He has been playing hurt to some degree since the Pitt game.

I had a very good vantage point yesterday. The injury has taken a big time toll on him. Something is wrong when he goes to plant. Gotta love the guy for gutting it out.

We have 3 good running backs right now...I hope they each get 15 carries vs. Indiana.

Also, call me crazy, but I liked the NW line a lot better than yesterday. Myers had some misses yesterday and BF was on his ass.

I cant wait to pull this post out down the road when the draft comes calling...or doesn't come calling!

He's not having a year worthy of touting his "9-0 as a starter" record 20 times per game, like announcers do. We are winning as a team, not with superior qb play. Based on Big 10 stats after the Maryland game, CJ is:

6th in passing yards per game
5th in pass efficiency
6th in completion percentage
in a 3 way tie for 6th in td passes
4th in total offense

Granted, CJ is ranked ahead of Rudock on all of these stats, and has been the better qb of the two for the past three years, but his season thus far has been more mediocre than most of us realize because we keep winning with an awesome run game and defense.

Incidentally, Canzeri is still 4th in the conference in rushing despite not really playing in the first game or the last game. That is some serious over achieving.

He wins games....the stats are for the ESPN spinning heads. He doesn't do things to lose games...difference in my mind between him and Rudock. He is hurt right now and just doing enough to get the team a win.

8-0 is all that needs to be said. OP turns the music down at parties.

What the OP fails to realize is that CJ is a huge part of this undefeated season.

I guess he doesn't remember CJ taking over in the ISU game and making ISU look silly. He was the big reason Iowa pulled away and won that game.

I guess the OP doesn't remember the final drive of the Pitt game. CJ did everything on that drive and got us in range to kick the game winning field goal.

Yes, this is a team game and all aspects of the Iowa team are the reason we are undefeated. But without CJ being CJ, the Hawks are probably 6-2 and outside the top 25.

I don't think the op is being a troll. He has pointed out his stats for the year
and they are what they are. CJ is our leader and the team thrives around him.
Fact he's 9-0 as a starter.
He is clearly hurt and not able to follow through on his passes, which
results in over throws.
He did miss Hillyer underneath when he threw to Vandenberg who was double covered.
Shocking he's not perfect!
I didn't understand why we didn't pull him when we where up 21 points.
We clearly had the game under control and Tyler could have handled the 4th quarter.
All we were doing was handing the ball off and running clock.
Another fact CJ goes down and we are screwed!

Who cares about stats? CJ has been clutch for us all season and when he is healthy, he is as good or better than any QB in the Big 10. Even now when he isn't 100%, he makes big plays for us. 9-0 as a starter is uncharted territory for us, and I wouldn't take it for granted. Go Hawks!

Well, let's just hang the dreaded 'game manager' label on him and be done with it. From here on out, discerning football consumers will know the lie behind the truth... of 8 wins.

What everyone who is slurping CJ fails to realize is that, say he is only playing at 60%... And that is why he is not running for any yards (he's less mobile than rudock right now), not hitting the deep balls, and not throwing for more than 180 yards a game. That's fine. Then why is he still in on every snap? We have a back up quarterback who is 100% and might give us a little spark, don't we? A highly touted kid who is about the same age that CJ was last year.

We saw that when our first team running back, Daniels, was only at 60%, he was highly ineffective compared with Canzeri who came in and lit the world on fire and is now 4th in the Big 10 in rushing. No one "starter" is so good at 60% that he is better than the next man in at 100%. Look at how drew otts replacement has played. Fantastically. And Connor kornbraths former backup? Kidd is killing it out there.

When healthy, CJ is a great QB. He's not healthy now, and he's not great. The stats don't lie. So why not rest him a bit instead of playing him on every snap of victories against lowly Maryland?

Because a 60% CJ gives Iowa a better chance of winning than a 100% wiegers. If you look at last 3 games and CJ's stats you'll see a difference between yards thrown in 1st vs 2nd half. Due to Iowa having leads and strong performance of the running game. Plus with a banged up line missing starters including both tackles and best wr why air it out when you are running it well.

I didn't read through this thread entirely. I just wanted to see if iowalaw actually replied after his initial post, rather than dropping the OP and then running away like a b****.

I give him credit for coming back and pushing his troll thread. Takes determination and a stubborn-as-f*** belief in what you're saying to post what he has in this thread.

I just hope he continues to do his best to set us message board readers straight with all these informative "Hawk fans BE WARNED" posts he's made in recent weeks. We still got 4 games to go, so hopefully we all finally heed his knowledgeable word before it's too late....because if we don't............well I don't really know how the f*** to answer that because we're just fans so technically we can't really do anything and the information iowalaw has provided is essentially useless as far as an attempt to help Iowa win games.

If only there was somebody closer to the football program he could get a hold of to let them know about CJ's performance...............well then iowalaw would be viewed as a hero of the Hawkeye fanbase. A f***ing hero I tell you.....

In fact iowalaw's mere presence requesting we take notice of this only reassures me that Iowa is going to go undefeated in the regular season.

A f***ing hero I tell you....

The QB with the best stats wins...Not.

KF football isn't designed for stats. It places a premium on getting ahead, running the ball a bit, playing field position football with a solid defense, running the clock, avoiding turnovers and creating them.

I am not sure about CJ's injuries but he will get better each week, seems to be able to run a QB sneak, and also is dinged for the passing motion. Plus, he is on the field when the bell rings.

Iowa is sitting on the best opportunity they have had, perhaps forever, to run the table...this time of year...given the schedule. Glad CJ is at the helm...

But not for Likely running back the kick-off for a TD, I think Wiegers would have gone in. 31-7 and the game was pretty much over. 31-15 and you are 1 play away from a nail biter. We will see Wiegers take some snaps, but unless CJ gets worse, they weill be in mop up time. CJ gives us the best chance to win, even at 60%.

Excellent point. I agree. True for all the 2nd string guys, IMO.

Are you kidding? He's been one of the best downfield throwers we've seen in a long time at Iowa. Pass blocking has been mediocre to poor and needs to get better or CJ may not survive the season. I still think we have yet to play at our best on offense but we have a ton of potential.

The key assumption to your argument is that CJ's injury will get better (this season) with rest. Based on what I know of it, it won't. It may require off-season surgery. So, then the question becomes: Is CJ at his current level better than TW at his current level? I believe the answer is yes. Not to take anything away from TW, as I think he's gonna make a great QB for us, but he's not there yet.

If CJ has to do too much running and/or takes a few too many big hits....he's going to be done. As posted before, I will be very pleasantly surprised if they keep winning as CJ's health drops. It's not going up until he sits or the season is done. This is not just an ice, rest and ibuprofen injury.

Don't count out Weigers as one who can finish the job adequately for the final four. The CCG and bowl game will be a taller order for him. Not impossible though.

My ice cream is too cold...

Some of you guys need to stop complaining about everything, judas priest.

It's sad. The same people who refuse to see the logic in my OP are the ones who steadfastly and sheepishly supported the staff in erroneously starting Mark Wiesmann and Jake rudock in last year's disasterous season. Would you still say that no mistakes were made last year in personnel decisions?

If you can see that the coaches do make personnel mistakes and sometimes a ride starters too long, maybe you could be a little objective and realize that even if you love CJ, he's not the quarterback you want him to be when he is playing at 60% and we are not going to beat any decent teams with him playing the way he currently is...as a rudock esque game manager. He needs to sit and get healthy before we go up against Nebraska and Ohio State.

I have to agree with I O W A and the stats seem to back it up. This year through 8 games CJ has 7 passes for 40+, last year through 8 games Jake had 7 for 40+. I think most on here would agree that Jake struggles with the deep ball.

While playing half the season so far with a pulled groin lol We're lucky he's been able to play every week or probably wouldn't be undefeated.

Because CJ at 60% is still better than anyone else we have currently.... We start one of the young guys we will lose.

1. We had much more of a deep threat at WR last year with Powell, not to mention KMM. Some of those 40+ were probably 2 yard passes that Powell took to the house. It's cherrypicking stats.
2. JR had all day to throw which helps a lot with deep throws. We lost two NFL tackles, oneof whom was the Outland Trophy winner, obviously.
3. CJ is still better in YPA and YPC, which is a better measure.
4. Also, CJ averages about 26 attempts per game while Rudock averaged 31. That's like 40 more attempts in 8 games for JR.

Some people look at stats without regard to context. I swear some people expect the same accuracy throwing 40-50 yards downfield as a quick slant. Completing anywhere near 40-50% of those balls is outstanding.

No, Iowa lost to those two teams. My comment was about CJ struggling with the deep ball this year not about who is better.

I can point to specific plays where Jake cost us those games. Huge mistakes. We would have lost to Pitt too had Jake played the 2nd half.
You don't worry about CJ. Even hobbled his deep ball is better than anything Jake ever had.

What is his completion % on throws of 30+ yards (or whatever metric they use)?

Pretty sure he's not "struggling" with the deep ball. How many has he attempted in the last 2-3 games?

That is a bona fide troll-bait comment right there.)

If you can see that the coaches do make personnel mistakes (they have...) and sometimes a ride starters too long (why not say that, and only that, instead?), maybe you could be a little objective and realize that even if you love CJ, he's not the quarterback you want him to be when he is playing at 60% and we are not going to beat any decent teams with him playing the way he currently is...as a rudock esque game manager. (Well, who would a decent team be, in your mind?.....wait hold on, you attempt to give an answer in the next sentence.) He needs to sit and get healthy before we go up against Nebraska and Ohio State (Decent teams like Nebraska and Ohio State, huh................ya know, one of these things is not like the other. Just sayin.).
If Ohio State is the only team you perceive to be decent left on our schedule, then what you're proposing is that Iowa sits C.J. for the better part of 5 weeks, to both see if Wiegers can be more effective at 100% and if C.J. can heal and regain his form a bit before, hypothetically, playing Ohio State...............correct?

Btw, no I didn't say you were right, I just wanted to see what you want.
