I love CJ, But Statistically...

It's sad. The same people who refuse to see the logic in my OP are the ones who steadfastly and sheepishly supported the staff in erroneously starting Mark Wiesmann and Jake rudock in last year's disasterous season. Would you still say that no mistakes were made last year in personnel decisions?

If you can see that the coaches do make personnel mistakes and sometimes a ride starters too long, maybe you could be a little objective and realize that even if you love CJ, he's not the quarterback you want him to be when he is playing at 60% and we are not going to beat any decent teams with him playing the way he currently is...as a rudock esque game manager. He needs to sit and get healthy before we go up against Nebraska and Ohio State.

Have you missed the part where even KF has said CJ won't be "healthy" until after the season is over? The Hawks just had a bye week and CJ sat for 1 week and it sounds like took very limited snaps the following week, yet he still wasn't healthy for the Maryland game. Unfortunately at this point the coaching staff is just going to have to do what they can to help him maintain from here on out. Hopefully we get a couple games here where the Hawks can build a comfortable lead and he can sit for decent periods (not to get "healthy", but rather to avoid further aggravating the injury).

The fact is, the reason the national media hates us is that we don't have any offense. We don't put up points. We beat Wisconsin in a 3 yards and a cloud of dust game by a few points, where the rest of the country has quarterbacks who throw for 300 or 400 yards in a game. CJ is game managing, and he doesnt have the wheels that mobile quarterbacks have. We need CJ to be 100% to be any good. Therefore, we need to sit him for 2 or 3 weeks while we roll over cupcakes.

As I was saying..................

He's not having a year worthy of touting his "9-0 as a starter" record 20 times per game, like announcers do. We are winning as a team, not with superior qb play. Based on Big 10 stats after the Maryland game, CJ is:

6th in passing yards per game
5th in pass efficiency
6th in completion percentage
in a 3 way tie for 6th in td passes
4th in total offense

Granted, CJ is ranked ahead of Rudock on all of these stats, and has been the better qb of the two for the past three years, but his season thus far has been more mediocre than most of us realize because we keep winning with an awesome run game and defense.

Incidentally, Canzeri is still 4th in the conference in rushing despite not really playing in the first game or the last game. That is some serious over achieving.

Bo Schembechler used to talk how there were two kind of QBs: the kind that would opt for throwing for 160 yards per game and making the winning TD throw in the Rose Bowl, and the kind that would rather throw for 250 yards and a couple touchdowns every week in nothing games against the Kansas States of the world (yeah, this was before Snyder). And the latter wasn't the kind of QB he ever wanted leading his teams.

We can look closer to home. Drew Tate had better stats in 2005 than 2004, and Stanzi statistically had a better 2010 than 2009. Which version of each did you prefer?

We talk all the time about QBs who have "it", how some guys have all the tools but just can't put it together on the field, while some guys just have a knack for winning despite what their stat line looks like in the box score. That second description, to me, describes CJ. In some games, he needs to run the ball into the end zone to get the score. In others, he'll need to use his arm and throw for big yardage, and I'm confident he'll be able to do that. CJ has "it"--whatever "it" is--but more than any Iowa QB since maybe Long or Vlasic, he's got all the physical tools as well.

Alabama is averaging 33.1 ppg, and Iowa is at 32.9 ppg. Apparently 33 ppg is the critical benchmark.

Nobody should prefer the 2009 version of Ricky Stanzi over the the 2010 version.

Other than the Michigan State game, what game did Stanzi win for us in 2009? Against UNI we only scored 17 points and needed to block 2 field goals in the last minute to win. Stanzi had nothing to do with blocking those kicks. Arizona? He threw a pick-six with no touchdowns - our defense shut Arizona down. Penn State? Rick was 11-26 with no touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Our defense and special teams won that game on their own. Michigan? Rick threw another pick-six and our defense closed out the game with an interception. Ricky played well against Wisconsin, but when our defense holds the other team to 10 points we should always win. Indiana? Credit to Ricky for bouncing back, and he did throw for over 300 yards, but anyone who wants a QB that throws 5 interceptions is a nut.

The 2010 version of Stanzi featured a higher completion percentage, more yards per attempt, more touchdowns, and less interceptions. His QB rating jumped from 131.62 to 157.63.

If you want to blame the 2010 debacle on Stanzi because Arizona scored 34 points against us, and that our defense surrendered late 4th quarter touchdowns against Wisconsin, Northwestern, Ohio State, and Minnesota, that's fine. However, I don't think it is rational to downgrade a QB's season due to defensive failures.

On this week's on iowa podcast, they mention that CJ is 9th in the Big 10 in passing touchdowns, 9th in pass offense, and 5th in pass efficiency.

Again, we are winning, which is awesome. But perhaps CJ is taking too much credit for the wins given his high profile position (like Rudock took too much of the blame for our losses last year). This team is winning due to a great running game, a great defense, and solid special teams. CJ is merely "game managing" us to wins by throwing the short passes and letting the TEs and RBs do most of the offensive work.

only an imbecile would criticize this starting QB for not putting up playstation stats when this offense is 50/50 yards by run & passing.

2015 Hawks are not the 2008 Texas Tech Red Raiders.

Our tailback ran the ball 43 times in the Illinois game.

Iowa only threw the ball TWO TIMES in the second half against Maryland.

Someone criticizing an Iowa QB for not putting up stats is an out and out ignoramus.

Most of his TD opportunities have been handed to the RB's. Canzeri, Wadley, Mitchell, and Daniels account for a total of 24 TD's. On top of that CJ has 6 rushing TD's as well, bringing the total to 30 rushing TD's. The fact that our running game usually dominates is the reason his stats aren't as good as they could be.

He also makes the plays when he needs to make the plays. I've seen several plays this year, where he and he alone kept the play alive. Make no mistake, him and the offense won the Minnesota game, because the defense for whatever reason had a serious off night.

Oh yeah, that's right. Thanks for reminding me........

I think this has already been beaten to death but, how bout one more time.
HE IS A LEADER LIKE NO OTHER!! CJ HAS GOT MORE GUTS AND BIGGER BALLS THAN ANY OTHER BIG QB!!

Joe Montana only passed for 40000 yards in his career.......He is now 15th on the list. Kerry Collins of all people passed him.......Peyton Manning is 1st with 71000 yards, nearing double what Joe Montana passed for......with all that said, who is still widely considered the all-time greatest QB. The position is much more than about stats......it's about leadership and putting your offense in the right place to be successful. There isn't always a stat for that. Trust me when I say that CJ has done a spectacular job at "leading" his offense and there is no way that Iowa is 10-0 without him.......

Michigan fan here. I have been following Iowa football since Jake came to Michigan, and Iowa is a better team with CJ. HIs feet allow him to turn a broken play into a 1st down, and he just seems to find a way to make it happen! Iowa fans deserve a great season after some frustrating years! And we Michigan fans know about frustrating football....... I also understand why Iowa decided to move on with Jake, and he struggled the first few games but i have watched him improve and get a little better each game, and to see him break 500 yards in a big ten game, and set a Michigan school record for TD's in a single game, and to be big 10 player of the week, makes me happy for him and Iowa! Sometimes moving on and a few new faces can be a good thing. For both parties. For me, its exciting to see we finally have a staff that can develop a QB!!!! And for Iowa, its exciting to see a more modern offense! And its working out well!

I dont think we will be seeing you in the Big 10 championship, but its fun to still be in the mix with 2 weeks to go!

Good luck! You guys have had a great season!!

Yup. Jake has worked out well for Michigan and CJ has for Iowa. A win-win as they say. Good luck to the Wolverines as well, unless we play!

How do you measure playmaking when it matters? He is clutch and there's really no stat for that. That's why winners win. They make plays when the game is on the line.

The "winners win" statement is too simplistic. Winning teams win. There are 22 starters who contribute to wins. We will see if being a "winner" is awarded by 1st team all big ten honors come award time. Or second or third team. I'm guessing CJ gets honorable mention honors, at best, given the play of the 8 QBs who have higher qb ratings than CJ in the conference. Many of the other QBs in our conference our winners too.

How many play on Sundays? CJ healthy certainly plays Sundays and makes a lot of money if healthy. That arm, ability to read and react, as well as intangibles are stunning.

He's been around the spotlight his whole life and now that's he's in it he's thriving. Fun to watch.

Okay...

Hard to have huge stats when you rush for so many yards per game as a team. One stat I know I like is 3rd and long that we have been converting thanks to CJ. I guess people would prefer Armstrong's numbers along with his 12 int's. Can't put a number on the importance of not turning the ball over.

CJ is a great QB with below average WRs. Our WR core can't separate and it forces him to make very difficult throws. Also doesn't get him much YAC yardage to of stats.

But to beat a dead horse, he's also a gamer and a hell of a leader.

A win's a win, but statistically, CJ was outplayed by last place Purdue's inexperienced backup qb. And was outplayed by Minnesota's QB last week. Thankfully, our tight ends have really stepped up and have been getting some awesome yards after catch. Those guys have hands of glue this year.

The running game is rolling, and we are winning as a result. But again, stats wise, CJ is going to finish the season 8th or 9th in the Big 10. Do those railing on this thread want to put money where your mouth is and bet that CJ will be voted 1st or 2nd team all Big Ten, given that you wouldn't trade him for anyone?

Don't care. Too busy winning...#11-0

If CJ get's first or 2nd team does it change Iowa's record, If Indiana's QB get's 2nd team does it change their record or make them a better team? In my eyes CJ may not have the stats that you seem to crave, What I do think is that regardless of stats he is the MVP of the Big this year.
