I take this stuff too seriously..

How the hell do you break away from it?

When you have kids it’ll get better- nope
Find a hobby- this is my damn hobby
Get some perspective- deaths, wedding, you name it hasn’t changed my love for the hawks..

Woof— help needed. Go Hawks!

I agree. It's being a fan I suppose.

You get invested from the beginning. When recruits surface on the radar and include us in their "final five" and than boom! They commit! And though you haven't seen a moment of them in actual action, it is the possibility that is intoxicating. The potential!.
And you add them to the returning team and there is the pre-season whispers how someone has emerged in practice and the anticipation builds.
And then there are the early season beat downs of lesser teams and the heroics in those games add to it all.
Success in the conference games and inclusion in the polls keeps you buoyed that something special is happening.

And then, suddenly, it is not going as planned. There are doubts, finger pointing, calls for removal. And all you've invested in is in jeopardy. "Must wins" are announced, placement in the big dance is questioned, fade surfaces again as a familiar description.

This has never been easy as an Iowa fan but I will never give it up, can find no better way to spend winter and will be there tonight swearing at the TV.

Acceptance is the key to a lot of things in life.

Fran won't change.

My hobby is building a sound system the cheapest way I can.

Receiver: Sony STRDH190 $149
CD/DVD player: Already had.
Turntable: Sony PSLX300USB $120
Front Speakers: Klipsch R610F Floorstanding $259/pair
Subwoofer: BIC America F12 $209

Without this hobby (of sorts), I'd need counseling as a Hawk fan.

Most games, win or lose, takes about 30 minutes to simmer down. Sunday’s Indiana loss really pissed me off until about Monday
Not as much as the 2013 Big Ten Tourney game vs. Sparty that knocked us out of Big Dance. Well, that was stolen by the refs so at least we didn't melt down in the 2nd half. But still...yikes, I was as angry as I've ever been at a sporting event all through the next month watching everybody else play. Or the '98 Tournament when "IONA" showed up on the board instead of Iowa, or Indiana getting in that year...I digress!

When Iowa loses, use this board as an outlet to vent. I’m the same way as Epenesa above. For about the first half hour to an hour after a loss, I’m usually pissed and here blaming Fran, the officials, players, whatever it may be, and even sometimes wrongfully so. Then perspective sets in and I feel a lot better

I like the idea of an official meltdown thread after Iowa loses. It helped a lot after the Indiana game @Moral

Lately I’ve been watching other big10 games. Even with teams I don’t care about. Just to see that all teams do bone head things sometimes. And all teams can look really good or bad on a given night. But I’m still way too emotionally involved. The worst is when it seems like the potential is there and we still can’t find a way to win.

It's a game. All sports are games. Playing and watching them should be for enjoyment. If it isn't, take a break from it to regain your perspective. And find something else to do!

I also have to admit that I have a SERIOUS issue when the Hawks lose. Now, it is not as bad when I was younger, but this year it has ramped up due to unrealistic expectations. When I was younger, it would take DAYS for me to get over a Hawk loss. It is still bad, but at least I can still smile afterwards when I am with my wife and kids.

WE BETTER DAMN WELL BET RUTGERS THOUGH!!!!!!

LOL are you joking? If you’re joking that’s funny. If you’re serious did you even read the post!?

I think we all do. It has the potential to make or break my night, next day/s. I have stopped wearing my Woolridge jersey, high tops and goggles from the high school days during games, so there is hope.

Yes, I read his post. Here it is for you.

IT gets a bit easier. I've been watching Hawkeye Basketball for 63 years. I used to be upset for days and days with a Hawkeye loss, now it's more like an hour. It isn't life and death but I do love the Hawkeyes. We need to win tonight to get back on track. If they don't.....uh oh.

I build websites, do woodworking projects, then there is my gun hobby, oh and I collect and make pool cues. I also enjoy disc golf, golf and escape rooms, cars and motorcycles.....

None of them include the Hawks, but when the game is on I am glued to it.

Maybe my wife is right, I have to many damn hobbies......
I feel like I could hang out with you. Do you make pool cues to sell or just for personal? And tell me more about this gun hobby...

You are still mired in the delusion that you somehow impact the game. Once you completely accept the fact that the socks you're wearing or what you had for breakfast on gameday doesn't determine if the Hawks win or lose, you'll feel a lot better.

Follow a really good NBA team

Problem with that is I don't even know the names of NBA players who aren't all stars. The regular season games are sooooo boring. Way too long of a season. And then the stars start playing for real once the playoffs start and the playoffs start after college is over. If guys still played college long enough for me to get to know them then I'd watch the NBA like I did in the 80s and 90s -- only the really, really great players turned pro early back then, from Jordan to Kobe and Garnett. But when nobodies declare for the draft and don't go until the second round and no one from the 2nd round of the draft even makes a team? I've tried, but I just can't get into it like I could when Jordan played. I knew who scrubs were for teams like the Pistons, Suns, Knicks, Sonics, Jazz, etc., because I saw them play for years in college. Now I don't know most of the starters in the league, even good players. Sorry, nope. The NBA playoffs are fun, though.

When the Hawks lose, the wife and I get sad. In basketball it ruins the day - in football it ruins the weekend.

But, I don't get angry. I have absolutely zero control over it, so why get angry about it? Did they fail to follow my instructions?

It's kind of like shouting at the rain.
