I think it would be neat if Joe Wieskamp...

Maybe Fran can be his foster parent. Would be nice for Joe to be on better basketball team and have shot at State Title.

Gotta think that it is just a rumor. Every article I have ever read about Joe indicates that he is incredibly family oriented. Right now he is playing in front of his family and that is the way he likes it. Some things are more important than winning high school championships.

Can't happen, doesn't fit the narrative of private schools having an unfair advantage.

Oh, that would go over well in Muscatine and the state. Clue all the nasty things that would be said blaming Fran. And it wouldn't even be anything he did.

I don't think many would blame Fran, as any sane person would realize Fran is concerned with building one team - the Hawkeyes. I'm sure he is concerned with the development of future hawkeyes like Wieskamp and Patrick, but transferring from Muscatine won't help him develop any moreso than staying. Maybe form a playing relationship with Patrick, but are they not in different classes anyways?

Only 1 class apart so it couldn't hurt. But don't see any reason to transfer besides the saying if you can't beat them then join them.

There is already waaaay too much transferring. Please let Joe stay at Muscatine and for God's sake let that school have some glory for once. Isn't seven state championships enough for West for the time being?

I fail to see why this would be a deal at all.. but I also don't care for Iowa HS bball. Why hasn't Weiskamp gone to a prep school is my question. Kid is legit as far as I can tell

Why would he need to go to a prep school? He had plenty of offers before he committed to Iowa, and if he were to de-commit (please don't let that happen) he'd have a ton of other offers in a day. Nothing wrong with living with your family through the high school career, he's getting plenty of time against top-level competition on the AAU circuit. I'm sure they'll do whatever is in his best long-term interests, but I don't see how going the prep school route helps him.

My b, not trying to say he SHOULD have, I guess I was just curious how the top prospects that do decide to go to those prep schools make that decision. I follow elite HS bball fairly closely (generally the top 10-20 prospects; I'm a big NBA fan) and this is something I've found interesting

Other experts can chime in, but some of the reasons include: improve academic standing, greater exposure, ability to re-classify to a different recruiting class.

Yeah, probably to help with academic standing, better basketball competition, and most likely a better all around environment to keep them out of trouble.

IMHO, no way. I can foresee accusations and general complaining from other schools and may even cause the NCAA to come sniffing around, given the father (coach) & son relationship.

I say let the kids play for their friends and families. As the Beach Boys sang, "Be True to your School".

Because HS basketball is irrelevant to his future. He plays with and against high level competition in AAU, and that has prepared him to play at the college level. HS is the equivalent of intramurals for these high level prospects in Iowa. Lower level competition and a lot of weird stuff going on such as being forced to play out of position.

In Joe's case in particular, his HS play is a clear window into his character. He plays on objectively terrible team, but when I saw him this year, he played a complete team game and shared the ball. He's an elite shooter, an elite passer, he's physical on the glass, he can post, he can handle the ball, he can get to the rim, and he can block shots. Against West High he was better at all of those things than anyone else on the court. This kid is gonna go down as one of the best we have had at Iowa.

My God, let the kid be a kid and stay with his class. Basketball is entertainment, pure and simple. A game. Real heroes are police, firemen and responsible fathers and mothers. Thank goodness Joe is also a fine student. Maybe after he breaks all of Iowa's records, he'll get a real job, get married and help raise Joe Wieskamp, Junior.

It news to me when it happened recently in the metro area, but apparently, basketball players transfer at Spring Break, giving them 90 days in new school so they don't miss any games in the fall.
Of course, one can always physically move...
