Indiana looking at McCollum

I have no inside knowledge, but there are a lot on the IU forum who really like him as a candidate and rightfully so. Hopefully the AD is vetting all these guys well. Of late it seems, though, TJ Otzelberger has been getting a good deal of mention. In reading and watching way too many podcasts on this subject, those who might also be be interested, per these “experts”are Brad Brownell, Mick Cronin or Greg McDermott.

I’m not one of those who’ve ever thought Brad Stevens, Bruce Pearl, Billy Donovan would be interested. McCasland at TT would be great, but seems unlikely with his deep TX roots. Beard has been the most talked about, but his very public undoing at TX, despite no charges filed, seems to be a non-starter. Someone will grab him from Ole Miss soon, I think. Golden at Florida, having a great year, has recently gained steam, but he was just recently cleared of some serious Title IX charges, that if were at all close to what was alleged, pale in comparison to Beard’s issues.

In the end, we’ll see what happens. Who really knows who’s interested and who’s not?
Greg McDermott is 60. He tried ISU for 4 years and had an under .500 record. He left before he was fired. He's not coming to Iowa.

The nightmare scenario is:

-Beth fiddles around with the Fran buyout until the 11th hour.

-She and the other bigwigs are forced to scramble and hastily interview McCollum at the Bloomington, Indiana airport lounge.

-Beth says she can't offer McCollum the job until she interviews DeVries (as promised).

-She gets a text on the flight back to Iowa City that McCollum is taking the Indiana job.

-McCollum goes on to win multiple Big Ten championships and an NCAA Championship.

Iowa is once again bested by a school whose colors are Crimson and Cream 😉
Whatever happens it's already a done deal. Either Fran is staying or Iowa has a new coach already lined up and the contract has been written and waiting for signatures. The discussions have happened between Beth and the agents of all coaches discussed here. It's just a matter if Fran wants to stay or retire.

Man, I hope you are right.

I hate to be that guy, but I'm going to be. It would not bother me in the slightest if we get absolutely smoked tomorrow. Now is not the time for moral victories, it's time for a burial and to move on. Let there be even more desire for a new chapter.

Robbie Hummel keeps plugging for Greg McDermott to IU, not Iowa. While Goodman seems to think it will be TJO. I don’t think it will be either one of them.

Is the juice worth the squeeze for either coach to move to Bloomington? I don’t think so. Neither guy seems like they are laser focused on the $$$. They both get paid well and have relatively high job security. IU has Nebraska football like expectations.

Words are just words but TJO has said repeatedly ISU is his dream job. Met his wife there. Crazy high job security and is getting solid results.

Things can change of course but that’s a move that would surprise me.

will mccollum’s coaching translate into success with similar caliber of players that fran has historically recruited? or is there an assumption that he will recruit at a higher level?
He would very likely do better with the exact same players as Fran.

That said, caliber of player is subjective to a degree. I doubt he's going to go after the same types of players Fran did.

There's a much wider pool of players to draw from than what Fran was interested in.

For example, most of Otzelberger's best players have been under the radar mid major transfers. Fran would never offer most of those players, even if he knew they were good he just wouldn't be interested in guys that play iso ball and aren’t great shooters.

Fran mostly limited himself to a fairly specific type of player he wanted. A better coach can adapt to different styles of players depending on what's available to him.

I’m fine with him. I’m sure many on our board won’t be, though…they’ll say not big enough get. There’s not one candidate, once named, that won’t have some warts.

Even Jesus Christ would be scrutinized by IU fans…“Not a big enough name. And despite some character flaws, why couldn’t he get Judas to come with him?!?! He’s the best 3-point shooter he had last season. Wanted more silver pieces in NIL, I suppose.”

Jesus Christ recruited Judas and coached him for three years. Judas didn’t like the direction of the coach and decided to portal out to a team that offered him more money. His new gig didn’t go well.

I personally don't believe that whatever happens vs Nebraska makes any difference for the future. That decision has all ready been made if Fran goes or stays.

Maybe helps that we don’t make BTT, can move forward more quickly

TJ is not leaving ISU at all, and assuredly not for IU. At least for the next 5-7 years. Not while Pollard is there. He took the job on a very modest salary and it’s since then been brought up, but it’s a dream job for him for sure. Indiana isn’t really an upgrade, apart from dollars.

He tailors his playing to fit the players he has.

You don’t need a team of 5 stars to succeed. But you do need a coach who knows how to utilize the talent he has.

I’m not worried about the recruits McCollum would get. The man can coach…period. You don’t win 13 straight conference championships and 4 national titles otherwise.
yeah i'm sold. based on the responses he definitely seems like the guy iowa should get.
hope beth has already made the arrangements. just pay fran, no need to waste even a minute to save a couple bucks.

Let's keep it real here.

Prestige-wise, Indiana is a heck of an upgrade from ISU (and Iowa, for that matter).

The win today may have saved Fran’s job. For sure if he wins 1-2 in the BTT and gets a win or two (or three) in whatever post season tournament the Hawks play in.

I think Iowa will have a bit of a run coming up, which will convince Beth to “stand pat” with Fran. Iowa is very risk-averse when it comes to coaching changes. I guess it comes down to whether attendance and fan apathy are important or not. No matter how the Hawks finish, I don’t see an increase in attendance or NIL next year.

Someone is going to get McCollum. If Iowa wants him, now is the chance. He won’t be around for long.

I heard a college bb analyst opine that Brownell will be next IU coach...doing strong job at Clemson... IU fans will like a ACC head guy better than MVC guy,I suspect.
Its amazing what one or two NCAA runs will do for your perception as a coach.

Take out last years elite eight run, and Brownell's career at Clemson is awfully comparable to Frans:
  • Only 4 NCAA tournaments in 14 seasons
    • Only advanced past Round of 64 twice in 24 years of coaching.
    • Went 6 straight seasons without an NCAA birth at Clemson
  • Missed out on postseason tournaments entirely (NCAA+NIT) 6/14 years
  • Barely above .500 in conference play (He was only .503 before this year)
  • Never finished higher than 3rd in conference before this year.
  • Never won a conference tournament
Biggest difference is that he has a sweet 16 and an elite eight run under his belt. Fran has more sustained success, but Brownell had the higher ceiling in the tournament. Otherwise, not much separating them.

Therefore, as an Iowa fan, I would be more than happy with IU hiring Brownell.

Not as much as it was 10-15 years ago. Time moves on. Just like Nebraska football doesn't draw the water it used to, Indiana is not basketball Nivana.
Good job for sure, but it's been over 30 years since they were elite under Knight.

Mike Davis took them to the title game as a 5 seed iirc.. 2002 I think.

Crean took them to 3 Sweet 16s.

Not a lot beyond that. I hesitate to call them a blue blood anymore.

Basketball is different, a good coach and enough money to buy 3 players and you can do it.

You don’t need 16-20 players like football or elaborate facilities to keep 85 guys happy.

I see a common thread running through these success or failures.
Coaching!!

Before leading Drake to a 30-3 record, the MVC regular-season and tournament titles in his first year, Ben McCollum, 43, guided Northwest Missouri State to four Division II national titles since 2017 and won 11 straight MIAA regular-season titles.

Northwest won D-II titles in 2017, 2019, 2021 and 2022. He was 394-91 overall but from 2017-24, Northwest was 253-21.
