INSIDER INFO

Didn’t someone else on this site a few days ago claim DeVries was a done deal?

If McCollum can get some decent NIL money to work with, Iowa might have a winner. I don’t know. A mid-major hire is bound to work out at some point for Iowa. Hopefully.
Ralph Miller came to Iowa from Wichita State. He did OK. (Look it up.) Lute Olson came to Iowa from that powerhouse Long Beach State. I hear Lute did OK.

If you watched Drake yesterday, you saw a team that plays defense like it's supposed to be played, holding Missouri of the vaunted SEC about THIRTY points below its season average while shooting about 30 percent. Drake, with a small team, put on a coaching clinic on how to rebound by blocking out and just outhustling the other guys.

Hell, not even Stirtz would make the roster at Missouri, let alone start. Four of Drake's starters last night were playing D-II ball this time last year, and the other starter is a kid who transferred from Wyoming where he started nine games last season. And this bunch of absolute nobodies drilled Missouri by ten . . . despite missing a boatload of FTs.

If you weren't totally impressed with Drake (31-3) and the coaching that was on display, you don't know anything about basketball. I hope McCollom is headed for Iowa City, but first Drake is on a mission. One win away from the Sweet Sixteen. Don't bet against the Bulldogs. I love watching them play.

Got some info tonight from someone who knows past and current players. A very reliable source in my opinion.
McCollum is a done deal to Iowa.
Good chance Fran might be headed to Penn, taking Connor as an Asst. if he takes job. Obviously, young brother heads along too.
Mulvey already has a school picked out, too.
Great info, if accurate. Penn a better fit for Fran.

Any inside info on whether McCollum can get a few of the players back, especially Dix, and get commitments from Fran's recruits?

I don't understand what going to Penn with Fran does for Connor's potential coaching career. He spent his first 20 some odd years with him, learning Fran's coaching philosophy, etc. It would seem beneficial for him to learn other perspectives from other coaches.
Or if BM comes to Iowa drake can hire another former Iowa coach kicked to the curb and he can bring his son as the coach in waiting. It’s almost like we’ve seen this story before…

Kinda hard to come to Iowa when you come to an agreement with Indiana a month or two ago. He can say he wanted to come to Iowa but he was firmly secured by Indiana as their next head coach once Mike Woodson resigned. That was a done deal and DD even admitted as much post presser.
I met a WV fan yesterday, and many of them are convinced that Tucker could have played, but he wanted to save a year for IU. He was injured, but never had surgery... Clearly, the DeVries deal with IU was done a while ago, and I am sure Iowa knew that.

The blocking out, the hustle and the defense were amzing to watch....

However I think i fell asleep watching that boring offense .....stand around wait till 5-6 seconds on shot clock and go to work is boring af...

Hopefully if he got some different athletes he changes it again, but Iowa fans have to much Lick in their systems still to watch that

Oh no! Not Mulvey!!! Say it ain't so!

JK. I actually really like Mulvey. Seems like a great young man.

Just like all the insider info that DD was a done deal to...lol lil old Iowa going to get embarrassed and outbid again big time again cause the big doners don't want to invest anything in Iowa mens BBall...
Derp a der.

Maybe just maybe its because our previous coach completely destroyed any resemblance of fan engagement. Ever think of that?

Idiot.

I imagine Fran will land a job somewhere, but there isn’t much better than a 5% chance he goes anywhere but a mid-major. He’s older and shown he’s not capable of deep runs. Someone will hire him to turn their program around and make them somewhat relevant again i suppose.
Siena probably wants him back; they dominated the MAAC his last 3 seasons there.

I randomly went to NW Mo. State’s season for 18-19, and his team was regularly scoring in the 80s. So, I wouldn’t necessarily take this year as what they’d do every year. It may be a function of his team in any given year. Adaptability, not pounding square pegs through round holes. You know, coaching.

I find it hard to believe that Indiana (a team that considers themselves a hibernating blue blood), with all their NIL money and willingness to overpay a coach, has been negotiating with DeVries for months to come coach their team.

You begin negotiations early in the season, before you know how your season or your target's season is going to turn out?

You don't have any idea how anything else in college BB is going to shape up. You don't know what other coaches may be available, which ones will excel and which ones will fail.

Unless you are going after a target that is almost an absolute guaranteed success, such as Brad Stevens, a team like Indiana does not lock in on someone that early in the season.

DDV wanted to come to Iowa. We couldn't meet his wishes as far as giving him the bank to recruit a championship level team. I don't blame him. If you have goals to win a National Title, you know what you want and need and won't settle for less.
The DeVries deal was done in February when Woodson was told he was done.

DeVries said he was contacted mid-season about the job in his Indiana presser that's on YouTube. He had no intention of going to Iowa.

Exactly what that is, not BM playing slow because that's his preference. Love it. Too many coaches are dogmatic about sticking to their preferred approach regardless of their personnel, IMO.

Taking a group of d2 players and trying to run and gun in a higher division is idiocy. It's also smart to stretch the shot clock as most teams are unwilling to play 19 minutes of defense a game. You're going to end up with easy dunks (of which there were plenty) as a result.

Idk man I thought the offense was exciting, honestly. The extra passes, the open cutters hitting easy layups. All the while forcing Mizzou to defend for extended periods of time. Chefs kiss

I don't give a shit about the McCafferys. They can pound sand with their nepotism. I hope you are right a bout McCollum. If Beth can't close the deal on him. I will be extremely disapointed. No other hire could suffice unless its Bruce Pearl.
BRUCE PEARL!

HIRE HIM!!!

Agree,.. You spend too much time working with dad and the assumption becomes that you can't make it on your own...

My post was meant to be a parody of hawkisoaker.

DeVries basically said the deal was done before the season ended in his hiring presser. How long? At least weeks, if not more.

I’m sure Indiana had discussions with a number of potential candidates over the past month or two. And of course DeVries would have no idea where he was on the list.

I believe his internet in Iowa was legit - but of course no way we were ever going to match the offer Indiana gave him - even if we could afford it. It’s a clear overpay at this point. It may pay off for them - but that’s a heck of a gamble.

You post a lotta good stuff, but I'll take an opposite view.

BM is a loyal guy---said he wouldn't discuss coaching elsewhere while his guys were playing.

That said, he's not a dumb guy. He can sign now with a P4 teams and probably get north of $15 million guaranteed. I would be shocked
if he stays at Drake, a school he was only at 1 year. His stud player needs $1 million type NIL---Drake doesn't have that and Drake coaching salary is not going to be competivie.

My guess is most of his players that are still eligible end up at his next school and that is part of the package deal.
Thanks for the kind words. I appreciate the response. You may very well be right.

The offense was anything but boring. And the players didn’t just “stand around” until there were 5-6 seconds on the clock.

Ben runs the offense that fits the players he has. As someone pointed out….he has had teams that averaged in the 80’s. As has also been pointed out….it would have been insane for Drake to play a run and gun game against Missouri with the players he has. They would have been run out of the gym.

Beth needs to open the checkbook to get this guy.
