Just went from 84 to 62 on Kenpom. Did a collective light go off? They can win it all playing defense like they did last night.

Let’s see a few repeats of last nights defensive effort. Purdue is one of the slowest playing teams in the league.

It's not all about speed. It's about efficiency. A team can play fast and be inefficient from a scoring perspective. A team can play slow and be very efficient. Do you think that Iowa looked better against Purdue than they did against North Carolina because Purdue has a slightly higher offensive efficiency ranking on Kenpom today and I'm guessing that Purdue's dropped a fair amount after last night.

I'm not suggesting that Iowa is some defensive juggernaut by any stretch but this team was flat out bad not just against Gonzaga but for most of the season up til last night. They were ranked 84 in the country prior to last night which was the worst in the top 25 by a longshot. Anyone who has watched the Hawks play this year (and last year for that matter) and can't see that there was a difference in intensity and efficiency on the defensive side of the ball last night wasn't watching with a clear mind. Hopefully this starts a trend that continues at Minnesota and going forward.

Their best shooters were rarely open. Rarely. Their 50+% 3 pt shooter was hurried into 2-6, passing up several shots because he was defended well. I think it was tge best perimeter defense Iowa has played this season.

Without a doubt.

One game. Nice to see. Let's see if it travels on Xmas day.

Much better job of recognizing shooters in the scramble situations. If you run at a guy and he knocks it down good job to him. Over the last 4 losses to Purdue it seemed like 1-2 guys would still be wide open even after knocking down multiple 3's. Purdue is in rebuild mode but still a much better defensive effort by the entire team.

Yes, like I said in my post that you replied to, they looked better. They looked interested.

But need to do that every night, not just once, against a team certainly not known as an offensive juggernaut.

Fortunately fir us PU missed a lot of open looks last night

And fortunately for Gonzaga, a great 3-point shooting Iowa team shot 19% against them, missing a lot of open looks. So what was your point again?

don’t let the numbers fool ya. Having your opponents miss open looks is a lot different that forcing them into bad shots. They still gave up way to many easy shots inside and out. Luckily they only hit 8/25 from three. It was nice to out rebound them though, that has been another issue we’ve had of not boxing out.

I didn't notice a ton of open looks get missed. Were there some? Sure but I think you're wrong about the number of wide open misses. I believe that the vast majority were rushed or contested. I think the Hawks missed twice as many as Purdue.

Much better job on the defensive boards last night, which was terrible against the Zags and not great against most teams. It doesn't matter if you play really good defense for 30 sec, if you let the other team rebound their misses. Offensive boards often lead to open 3s, if not layups.

It's just one game, but certainly encouraging. If they can make it into the 50s with over a larger sample size(say the next 5 or so games) that will give their post season prospects a significant boost.
On a related note, the FSN1 pregame show specifically mentioned Iowa in the context of no team making the final four with a D efficiency less than 50.

Agreed, there were only a few wide open 3s for Purdue. Allot of the ones they made were open. The majority of missed were contested.

For most of Fran's tenure here, I have thought that he didn't put nearly as much preparation effort into non-B1G (except for ISU) games as he does B1G games. Less game planning, less emphasis on rest, etc. A team that looks sluggish in one game suddenly looks much better in another.

I think he practices the team harder with non-B1G games coming up - even Gonzaga. When the conference games start (or ISU), the team seems to look fresher. There is no time during the conference season to get guys into game shape, so I think he does more of that in November and December for the non-con games.

Just a theory.
