Iowa announces Kirk Ferentz contract extension through 2026

After the Paterno debacle where Joe had no idea he was a pale shadow of his former self- for at least a decade- and considering that KF was near the top of many overpaid coaches lists as recently as a year ago, it's willful negligence to commit to this many years.

Do people legitimately have an issue with (prior to this contract) KF making $4M a year? If so, is it because you want the athletic department to use their mountains of cash on other sports? Or is it because you think for $4M we should go out and hire Tom Herman or a former Hawks like Bret or Diaco, who you think will turn Iowa into Ohio State?

I honestly just want to know. Does anyone honestly have an issue with the actual dollars KF makes, or is it just that you think this will delay the hiring Bret or Diaco who are sure to lead us to the promised land sooner?

7 wins huh? That should tell you what Barta's expectations are. He just formally set the bar.

I have no issues with paying Kirk that much. In fact, I'm glad that we do. However, I also have certain expectations for that and I think others do as well. Those expectations tend to follow the pay check.

And he has proven, repeatedly, that he can and will produce those expectations.

I agree. His seat has gotten hot twice in his tenure (at least for on the field performance) and both times he made the necessary changes to right the ship. His seat will probably get hot again in the future and he will have to adjust to that as well.

To be fair though, outside of Ohio State and Alabama, every team goes through boom or bust cycles.

I personally do not have much of a problem with the salary amount if he coaches a winning program/team. BTW .500 (2010 thru 2015) or close too then he is grossly overpaid. My primary objection is the very lucrative buyout, the removal of an incentive based salary except for the good years, and a one-sided contract in favor of KF. Absolutely zero downside for KF even if he never coaches another winning game.

After last year I have no problem with the amount of money. The contract is simply too long. Where do people think KF is going? He's always been a decent coach with below average recruiting relative to his resources and we're not too far removed from some big disappointments, a 4-8 season and a string of bowl embarrassments that keep affirming national doubts about our regular season and real potential.

I think 2020 should have been left in place.

Then recruiting goes downhill the closer we get to 2020. If you don't have 5 years in the bank nowadays, other teams use it against you in recruiting.

The buyout, I can see people having issues but I doubt it ever comes into play. The yearly cash doesn't bother me one bit. Besides, if he actually does finish it out I think that means good to great things year in year out for Iowa. In fact, if we get to say 2021...I would not be surprised one bit they extend a year each year he finishes (with reduced to no buyout on those years).
