Iowa announces one game suspensions for Lattimore and Jackson

The problem is there have not been adequate backups, especially at tackle. That is why a true freshman and a RS freshman played last year. Looks like a similar deal this year. Kallenberger is probably going to be LT for the first game. Levi Paulsen will probably be RT if he survives camp without getting hurt and his brother or Banwart will be on the inside. There is a strong possibility the Hawks lose this game. The OL is going to be a serious concern for this game. More significantly, there seems to be a character issue on this team. Very disappointing.
Disappointing indeed...who's responsible for this, and why isn't anyone being held accountable?

Mistaking a police car for an Uber ride isn't what I envision as a bright move.
Nobody is saying it was a bright move. They're saying it was a harmless mistake that shouldn't warrant arrest. The guy was enjoying himself like almost all college aged kids do and tried to be responsible getting home. Unless something else happened that wasn't reported, there is no reason to arrest him as long as a ride was coming for him and no damage was done to the car. Simply a revenue move for the ICPD.

They do have the nation's sack leader returning at one DE spot:

TW and AJ go up against better DEs every day in practice.

Let's hope Kirk doesn't crawl into his "play not to lose" hole again... we've seen that movie before and it often ends in an upset loss

I've sorta resigned myself into believing exactly this.

I suspect we're gonna see a real simple game plan here. Loads of multiple TE's tight, lots of pounding the rock and rotating backs with loads of play-action and probably a lot of the FB's.

Anything to keep Nate clean when they do throw it. If Brian comes out throwing it around all day I'd be shocked.

This sentence in the release is key: "Violation of team policy or rules can include academic performance, attendance, timeliness, behavior, effort, and engagement. "

Based on that it could be things like missing too many classes, missing a study table, attendance/tardiness to team functions/weight lifting, or other things I'm not considering. We will likely never know unless the players themselves say.

Based on that sentence, it could be anything.
What does that sentence possibly exclude?

Guy was bombed and got in a police car. I'm sorry if that doesn't scream public intox what else does. To blame the cops for Reiff's drunken behavior doesn't make much sense. He kind of forced their hand when he said he thought their squad car was his uber after asking why he was in their MARKED POLICE CAR. Going to go out on a limb and say they only arrested him to make $ is BS considering with that fine you do realize how little ICPD benefits off that citation.

1) Many cops I've spoken to said that PIs are enforced when the person is a danger to themselves or others. Being drunk, not paying attention and mistaking a cop car for a ride is, to say the least, embarrassing. But it doesn't sound like anything most people would consider serious.

2) More than what they would have made if not issuing it, right?

I guess we'll just disagree on this one. When someone has a ride coming to take them home, I don't see how it's necessary to enforce a PI in that instance.

If both weren't starters, it's a non-story..couple of Detroit kids raising hell in I.C.
Apart from how it adds to the difficulty factor concerning matching-up with a tough NIU squad ... Ferentz still sounds pretty positive about Lattimore and Jackson. Had those guys not risen to the challenge that Ferentz and Co had posed to them ... then perhaps their suspensions would have involved more games. Instead, missing the first game is still a let-down to their teammates ... but likely a comparative 'slap on the wrists.'

I guess it's better knowing this far out that we won't have them as opposed to having a week or less to prep.

Apparently Alaric is a slow learner.
No doubt, the guy was suspended for the bowl game as well last year. He needs to grow up pretty fast. Be pretty stupid to be wasting a shot at the league, by being in the dog house the next couple of years.

This is the correct answer. Jenkins may be an option, none of us know. But counting on a true freshman to be ready Game 1 or even anytime this season isn't a viable answer. O-linemen who play as true freshman have to be very blessed physically to be able to do so. That's why the list of those who have at Iowa is so short.
I would imagine Kallenberger, Fergeson, and Paulsen, if he's healthy will be the most likely options. Unfortunately this is setting up a lot like some other season openers recently, missing both tackles to start the year.

(1) I hardly doubt it's a "let-down" to the two guys getting the start; (2) it's always "next man in" regardless of the reason(s) why; and (3) why is everybody convinced their replacements are destined to fail?

It sounds like Iowa might as well forfeit. Mighty Northern Illinois and the greatest DE in the history of forever are coming to Iowa City. Poor little Big Ten kids gonna get clobbered by the brutes from the MAC.

Really?

I know Iowa's history in such games under KF, but c'mon. The coaches have known about this likelihood (Jackson and Lattimore) for almost three months! You don't think they'll have backups ready to roll for the opener?

Frankly, I think Iowa will more than compensate for the missing players and teach NIU...and those suspended Hawkeyes...a mighty powerful lesson.

Iowa -- 41
NIU -- 13
i think you way underestimate niu

especially with the extreme lack of experience we will have......

It just dawned on me that Alarics' suspension could be a result of just one incident. Maybe this is still part of the punishment from before the bowl game? KF gave him 2 games and those were the consecutive 2.

Kirk said he was off suspension in the Spring.

What does the backup situation look like at Iowa? Curious if there is a two-deep? Are you looking at having to play true freshmen or do you have redshirt and sophomores in the mix?

Highly and extremely unlikely true freshmen play. As far as who will line up as starting LT and RT in Game 1, the answer is we won't know until closer to the game. The most-likely candidates are a senior, pair of juniors and a redshirt freshman.

Why didn't they announce the suspension when it happened? Why wait till right now? Sure glad I don't live and die on Iowa sports anymore. Such a fragile program in so many ways.

20 year olds making poor choices is an inherent part of the process and always will be.
As for affecting the outcome, who knows? It's not a positive, but we've seen Iowa crap the bed at home before in a variety of circumstances.
The only outcome that would really surprise me would be Iowa getting blown out( 3 tds or more). I'd be mildly surprised if the Hawks won by 3TDs or more. And I wouldn't be surprised at all for Iowa to win or lose with a 10 point or less final margin.

Probably because they had until practice started to get the situation under control. They didn’t, so they’re suspended.

How is the program fragile?

If he's healthy Levi Paulsen will move out to tackle, where he started in the bowl win over BC. The other tackle will be either redshirt freshman Kallenberger or senior backup Dalton Ferguson. Kallenberger is listed at only 282, but he got good reviews from the coaches last season and in spring ball. Just guessing that Ferguson backs up both tackles vs. the Huskies.

One of Banwart and Reynolds was going to start at OG anyway. With Levi moving to tackle for NIU both will probably start. Landan Paulsen could figure in.

Bagdropper had a good point above. If you are going into a game without your starting OTs, both of whom are good, it helps a lot if you are loaded with talent at TE. Look for a lot of two-TE sets and some three-TE sets to help out the tackles and still get one of Fant/Hock/Beyer open.

Run the ball, play the fullback and when NIU crowds eight men up front throw to the open TE or WR, or a RB out of the backfield.

No doubt the game against the Huskies just became more difficult, but Kirk Ferentz enforces the rules- not just when a player ends up on the police blotter. That's a quality most fans admire in our coach. At some schools the players would play the game anyway.

When the three starters and key backup line up on the field for the second game I suspect they will do some damage to their opponents.

Kallenberger will be starting.

I think he will be a very good Iowa offensive tackle before he graduates. Another in a long line of very good Iowa offensive tackles.

Coaches are pretty high on him. He’s got great footwork, just needs to get stronger and get a bit better with his hands. Doyle will take care of the strength and doesn’t get much better OL development than Iowa.
