Over the last 4 years (2020 - 2023) the Iowa defense is ranked 3rd in scoring defense and 5th in yards allowed. The Hawks record is 32-12 with basically a very poor offense, which usually means more opportunities for the opponent to pick up yardage and score points.

By comparison ... Iowa State is an impressive 11th in scoring defense and 6th in yards allowed over that same time frame. Their record is 26-21.
KF has managed to win games with an anemic offense. Matt Campbell has had a much better offense but can't get as many W's.
Kirk has done a remarkable job winning games when 1/3 of the team (offense, defense, special teams) is not working well.
